I forgot to mention in the video, but we both will have bear spray (which is included in the base weight talked about) this is grizzly country after all 🙂
You also forgot to mention your tent. Found out through a link to purchase one from your site. Thanks I'm a hammock camper, but I'd definitely have a Duplex if I was a ground dweller.
@MYB3ST1 I never camp above tree line. I day hike above tree line and head back down to camp. If that means I can't do a few trails then sobeit. There are literally a million other trails I can backpack. It has never caused me pause before.
I think it's likely that "packing your fears" will be more like "preparing adequately for a ton of mosquitoes and cold rain" by the end. I started the GDT without rain pants because I never felt the need on the triple crown, but I bought a pair before I finished. On a more upbeat note, I recommend taking as many of the high route alternates as you can; they're typically amazing. Happy trails!
I'm pleased you are back with Sprocket. Maybe I'm projecting but you seemed so blue on the GET and now you're back to your usual enthusiastic self. Really looking forward to following you both on this trip.
The insects buzzing the camera made me really feel like I was there with you! Beautiful place for a video, and thanks for sharing your gear! Good luck on the trail and I look forward to some form of trip report!
So jealous of the thru hiker lifestyle. Not sure I’ll ever get the time. Still been my UL inspiration to get under 7lbs. Finally done it. Thanks Jupiter. Be safe and enjoy yourself.
While bears don’t often compromise ursacks (example photos online) they will, with some frequency, paw, chew, and maul them until their contents are inedible for humans. Just something to consider when considering contingencies.
Well said. After much consideration I have decided they are a flawed tool - though a marketing success. I took a bear can on the GDT and was happy with the higher level of food safety.
@@PaulSchortemeyer I splurged for a bearikade and haven’t looked back. Dead simple, peace of mind, works in all environments. Plus I look like a tech bro.
I’m so excited to watch you two on this trail! As I age it gets more and more difficult to backpack. Even with light gear. Sending you hope and peace and only bear sightings!
Good to see somebody calling out the "hang your food" thing. Multiple trips in Canada/US bear country convinced me that it is almost impossible to do this adequately, except at low elevation outfitter camps.
Takes a lot of courage to disclose a 3L rain jacket, but it'll be worth it. I've settled on the Zpacks DCF rain kilt for rainy hikes. Keeps my shorts dry, doesn't compromise breathability, is great when thrashing through wet willows on cold mornings, and is much lighter than rain pants.
Very nice. Love my OR sun hoodies and Patagonia Torrentshell 3L. The rain jacket's pit zips have been essential for drying out the sun hoodie when it gets cold.
I’m relieved you took a good rain jacket. I hope you had some warm sleep clothes too. The last section was really wet. I wore rain pants almost every day and was so happy to have them. I hope you guys had a wonderful hike. I really look forward to hearing about your journey :)
Can’t wait for the videos!! I did the Brazeau loop last year which shares a small section of the GDT and it was amazing! When you get to Jonas Shoulder, take it all in! If you can capture some footage from there I’d love to relive it! The view of the whole Rockies is just astounding!
A week ago I watched you PCT journey (it's my greatest dream to thru-hike it) and remember you met Rocket at the last week. And now you're a couple. It's so sweet :) Hope you're still together!
I wouldn’t say you’re packing your fears… sounds like you’re being smart about what you’re taking. The Rocky Mountains can be cold - especially when it’s windy and definitely at night - and don’t be surprised if you see snow - it can happen year round in Alberta/BC. Anyway, better to be prepared for anything and not use it then to leave it behind and need it. Enjoy your hike! Looking forward to watching your videos when you’re finished!
This is her second iteration. It's a lot of looking at what she liked about other packs, thinking about what she wants that others don't have, and researching on Reddit fabrics and such. Came out great! And can't wait to see future iterations
