    Miyamoto Musashi was not only a great swordsman. He wrote a book about skill, saying that one could apply this skill to anything, not only swordsmanship. He proved it by giving up the sword and becoming a fantastic painter in his old age…

      Episode 80 of the Jocko Willink podcast was a little over 2 hours of discussing Musashi's "The Book of Five Rings" (followed by 20 minutes of Jocko discussing how to be a better man through his supplements, etc.). I found it very interesting.

      I came to the comments to mention this specifically. I read it back when I trained in martial arts. I was a blue belt at the time and was able to implement some of Musashi's teachings before I had even finished the book, and kept doing so even up to 1st Dan.
      The book was so influential that I bought a copy (along with Sun Tzu's The Art of War) as a gift for one of my instructors who helped me train for black belt.

    Musashi allegedly lost one single duel. He fought a master with the six foot staff (a foot of those days was 35cm, so a six foot staff back then was 210 cm, not the modern 183). He won.
    The master sought for a new weapon to try it again, and he found the not yet commonly known "kusari gama", a blade with a long chain. (Most often a sickle, but there were daggers with a chain as well.)
    This surprised Musashi and he lost the only time ever.

    I'd like to give props to swords men of African descent, and especially a Black French man born in the Caribbean.
    [ Born to George Bologne de Saint-Georges, a wealthy planter, and Nanon, his African slave, Saint Georges enrolled in a fencing school at 13, becoming one of the best fencers at 15 and the fastest at 17. According to the son of Saint Georges’ Master:]
    Should add he was a noted composer as well.

    • @mrnancy1114
      @mrnancy1114 3 роки тому

      [ The art of fencing is believed to have originated from Spain. While the modern rules and mechanics of the game can be traced back to the 18th century, memoirs from Europe indicates that men of African descent engaged in the art as far back as the 1500s.]
      [These swordsmen were documented in a variety of books including the books by German fencing master, Hans Talhoffer.]
      This Hans Talhoffer mentioned in vid loved sparring with Africans or Afro- Germans??.., sorry I can't put the link to pics or text because UA-cam hates outside links.

    Musashi didn't use a wooden sword against Kojiro. Kojiro fought with an abnormally long sword called a Nodachi (well that's what they believe it was anyway). As he could outreach Musashi he used a wooden oar from the boat he rowed over in and whittled it down a bit which gave him extra reach. And he killed him with that oar!!

    Limited in the battlefield? Augustus legions disagree with that.
    But sure, it have always been more popular as an accessory you bring around that is also useful for self defense, spears are great in war but you don't want to lug one around when you walk around town. More like a fancy pistol for modern day officers then a rifle. That is also why swords often were decorated. Still, there have been many successful units using swords in history.
