    This extra-length segment shows all the various layers that are buried in the foundation hole. There is tubing for the thermal mass and draining piping going into the sump tank. The next video will show the dome structure going up!

    I advise you to put some plastic inbetween the stones and the wood in 6:55. It will prevent the wood from rotting because of the humidity from below.
    Great work, thanks for posting!

    @ddnguyen278 The exhaust will not go through that area. I'll install some kind of heat exchange and blow only fresh air through that part. The exhaust will go outside where it belongs. Thanks - good question.

  • @Bigelowbrook

    @Mooja12 If the ducts are too low, a lot of the heat will bleed down into the ground and out under the foundation footings. The footings drains around the building will keep the natural ground water out. For the most part, the dirt will stay dry. It's the moisture in the greenhouse that is the problem. Powdery mildew grows like crazy in my other one!

    @tenj00 The boards there were temporary just to fit things. There is a layer of closed-cell foam that was placed under them. Also this is treated lumber which is rated for direct burial. I believe it's rated for 40 years.

    the water line is at 900 gallons. It's a bit large for this system but helps to keep the fish density lower.

    Good stuff. Thank you for posting these. I'm curious why you laid all that dirt before laying the ducts. Wouldn't having the ducts deeper in the ground help regulate the temp of your thermal mass? Are you concerned with stagnant moisture in the ducts (e.g. fungus, Legionnaires' disease)? Also, how did you determine the length of ducts? Are then long enough for a greenhouse that size? Not trying to pick but i'd kicking around similar ideas and am genuinely curious.

    Did you know that you should put something between brikcs and wood, at 06:40. Something like roofing felt. Because if you don't do it, the wood will moulder. and the situation like you, it's a very big job to change those woods. the humidity likes to rise along the bricks, and if there is something waterproof, all boards will stay good.
    PS. sorry for my bad english. I am from Finland

    I hope you don't live in a windy area. Locally we put at least two rebar rings in the foundation and tie vertical rebar every 12 ft. to the footer rebar, then those go up thru the block openings to the top where the anchor bolts are tied to the rebar and the entire column filled with concrete, finally the sill boards are fastened down with nuts Your dome seems to only be tied to one block every once in a while and cement is not strong as it cannot be squeezed but is easy to pull apart...

      they custom and pre-build very efficient green houses. I like their ground source heat and cool system below the green house space. let me know what you think and see if they have mistaken your project as public or not? I hope you have determined new applications for your space as the tragedy becomes opportunity.

    With a soupier concrete mix you could have left the J bolts in the plank and staple the foam/barrier material on the bottom of the plank. Just set the plank in and wriggle it a bit.
    Done. Make sure block hole taper is in correct orientation. Narrow at the top.

    Nice work. How is the heat transfer system working with the tubing? Are you using it for cooling as well as heating? I'm doing something similar (just broke ground) except I have one circuit 2' deep and am using 2' of gravel around the tubing as the thermal mass and also have another tubing circuit 5' deep to take advantage of the consistent 55 - 60 degree ground temperature for heating and cooling. That way if I need cooling and the gravel/mass is too warm, I can blow the hot air down into the 5' deep circuit.

    • @Bigelowbrook
      @Bigelowbrook  9 років тому

      I mainly use it over the winter when I don't feel like running the heater over night. We've had several nights where it would get down to 0F and The lowest the greenhouse got was 41F. I haven't used it over the summer since it doesn't really get hot enough to need it.

    Hello and I love your work, been following since the beginning! I have recently built two greenhouses and have buried eight 100 foot long tubes for the thermal mass. I hooked them up and don't have any air flow. What CFM calculation did you use to size your fan and are you pushing or pulling the air? Thanks in advance!

    • @Bigelowbrook
      @Bigelowbrook  7 років тому

      You'll need a pretty large fan to push air through tubes that long. I'm using one of these to push the air through. It's still wasn't enough. There's just a huge amount of resistance from the corrugated piping. I've basically have giving up with the geothermal mass. The biggest problem is that water condenses in the piping, molds, then blows the mold into the greenhouse. Once I stopped using it, most of my disease problems with the pants have stopped.
      www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200660314_200660314

    • @Bigelowbrook
      @Bigelowbrook  7 років тому

      It's perforated pipe so the condensate can drain out. I just keep the vents open and it will be around 10 degrees hotter in the greenhouse. When it gets really hot out I open the doors too.
