- It's time for an interface shootout! I compare the older Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 to see how it compares with the newer Focusrite Clarett 8 Pre USB. The results were not as clear cut as I expected...
The mics used for this session were;
Earthworks DK7 set
AT2050 in figure 8 polar pattern with the null pointed toward to drums to catch the reflections from the right and left walls

Very clarifying man, helped me alot !
Very informative indeed! My trusty clarett i818 always delivers a nice signal. :)
Keep em coming, Bob!
Awesome, well thought out review. I bought the unit before I watched this; your review makes me much more confident that it's supreme sound quality wasn't just in my head. However I have been having a hard time getting to work on Windows or even my newer Mac Mini.
A well done video. I have the Saffire Pro 40 and thought about ditching it. My buddy has the Claret. We can work with the two nits to achieve our goals. I think the Air on sanded as good as, perhaps little better than the Saffire. Together, I think they'll make beautiful music together.
Great comparison mate.
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Thanks!!!
Great A/B test man.
Thanks!
The air function is like removing a blanket from the front of the mic. The question is, couldn't you just do a frequency boost in the mid highs to get the same result out of the Saffire?
Saffire is a little more raw in its sound. The air on the Clarett has a brightness that you could probably use in a concert setting. Or a song that is going all hell for leather. With the air off there is a warmth there which you could listen to all day.
My thoughts too. I got an awesome deal on a used unit.
i agree. clarett has slightly more highs, without the air engaged, but too subtle to really notice. Overall, they sound pretty much the same as far as depth is concerned. Was hoping there would be a greater difference, but based on this, we're not going to get $2000 AD/DA sound with clarret.
That air mode is pretty damn bright
Saffire is closer to what I want my finished drums to sound like lol - I picked it up just for line level and the adat to my Hilo - good to know I can use it if my Evo 8 ever goes out!
Clarett Air sounded best to me. But they all sounded good. Cool video!
Ill take the Saffire any day of the week... I was going to upgrade from my Saffire 56 to the top Clarett one... I think Im gonna keep it for a while... the low/mids on the saffire are pure gold too much shininess for me... the actual really incredible thing here going on is your fantastic A/B skills, you've really done something to be praised for man, thank you a lot cheers
The Saffire is definitely 1 great interface! I actually purchased a 2nd pro 40 and will have a video soon on Dual Unit Mode! Thank you so much I’m glad you enjoyed the video, there’s more to come soon!
@@bobdrums when will that be up. I have a pro 40 and want to get another
Nice! It’s really easy to set up, I would recommend it! It will be out within the next 2 weeks
I have to sell my saffire 56 because my m1 Mac won't play nice with it. Sad about that
That is disappointing! I do want an M1 Mac but I’m not buying all new interfaces!
Great A/B comparison. I'm using Liquid Saffire 56 but nowadays I upgrade my mac do M1 Max od problem occur... No drivers to Liquid Saffire 56. Now i looking for good successor for my Liquid Saffire 56. Using it like ADAT extension isn't so comfortable because there is no way to change inputs from XLR to JACKS without drivers... Have you got any idea for good successor of Saffire?
P.S. My opinion about Claret vs Saffire comparison is: Saffire sounds more analog and musically. Clarett without Air is a little bit thiner than Saffire but quite similar. Air function makes Clarett awfully plastic bright....
Thank you for this video!
So for the upgrade price you get a little top end EQ boost with the "Air" setting & USB..... Don't waste your money if you can still use firewire.
I’m running a Safire pro14. Love the way it sounds but if I’m running guitar direct in I have turn the gain almost all the way down to prevent clipping and then crank everything or flip the software to line and crank the gain way up and still have to turn my monitors way up to get the level right. Can’t figure out what’s up with it.
Air just sounds like a HF shelf boost. Is there something more to it?
I'm listening on DT770 pros. Might be my hps, but the difference between the Saffire and Clarett (no air) is very slight in this comparison. And yet, when I use my Clarett vs my Saffire, the end result is obvious to me. I don't really know how to describe it, but when recording a full mix with the Saffire, I had a lot more of a headache (figurative and literal) trying to figure out the mids. I don't have this problem with the Clarett, even when the signal chains sound the same to me in a shootout. Must by a combo of dynamics, tone, and pairing specific mics. Clarett seems to be able to make my more sensitive condenser mics shine.
In my opinion, upgrading mic pres offers diminishing returns, but in the mix, EVERY little bit counts.
Saffire Pro 40 is still a Beast!!!
If I'm honest I didn't notice a big difference in normal mode between the two preamps. Maybe the saffire Pro 40 sounds somewhere in between air On and off mode on the Claret but with a more analog, more raw sound. The air mode, frankly , did not particularly impress me: it tends to go a little too much on the high frequencies and this can generate a problem, depending on the context in which you use it. I own a liquid 56: if it weren't for the obnoxious thing now that you can't use it in future Macs, I would hold onto it very tightly. I have made excellent multichannel recordings thinking of a product that was born as a prosumer interface. Times have changed and unfortunately we are forced to change.
The camera angle change for the pro 40 makes me feel the sound is further away and somehow muted
I like the Clarett, but would probably not use the Air on every channel...maybe only on the snare top/bottom and overheads.
Hey Danny! Yeah it sounds especially good on those mics, really helps bring out the hats with my overheads
For a long time I want to upgrade my Saffire Pro 40 to Clarett 8PreX. But after watching your video I realized that it’s not that important priority for me, because sound difference isn’t that big. Still, I want Clarett’s low latency and amazing converters. And I read that preamps have less noise, how do you feel about that? Wondering about the noise with dynamic microphones on quiet sources like acoustic guitar.
What I don’t like about the Saffire that vocals recorded through that are not very clean and transparent in comparison with Apollo Twin, which I tried at my friend’s studio. For pop music I think Clarett is gonna be better.
Yeah the Pro 40 still sounds great!
The mics I mostly use, Earthworks, are super hot so I don’t even touch the gain on OHs or snare top & bottom so I can’t really say if there’s less noise from the Clarett pres.
The Clarett is a better interface for sure but if you bought one you could still use your Pro 40 over adat so you had both!
@@bobdrums I have Saffire Pro 40 and Octopre MKII Dynamic to record drums/bands. Even though I still don't have enough space for that. Gonna sell the Saffire, because I won't need 24 channels
@@bobdrums Thank you for this video! It made me relax a little about sound differences. Even though I'm still trying to earn money to buy Clarett 8PreX.
How are you connecting the Saffire to your MacBook? I’m not finding any FireWire adapters to usbc.
Also great video! New sub
Hi Nathan, yes you’re right! I have an Apple FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter then an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter going into my MacBook. I picked them both up used to save a bit of money since they are pricey. Hope that helps!
@@bobdrums I have this same issue. Just changed to a newer Mac and this adapter is a big problem. Can't find the original one and I'm not sure if it works with the "pirate"
@@romulopampolini Yes it's a bit frustrating but I would try your best to get the genuine Apple adapters since they are guaranteed to work!
right away with the "air" on it makes a huge difference.
Yeah the Air is probably the biggest feature in the Clarett for sure! Thanks for watching!
Great vid man, nice comparison. I love the Saffire but I really hate the firewire connection !
It's a great interface! A bit outdated now for sure and it's a shame it's not supported on the new Apple Silicon computers but that's what happens I guess. I have a new video coming soon on connection 4 audio interfaces together (2x Safire, and 2x Clarett) so keep an eye out for that in the coming weeks!
as it turns out, you can get saffire pro 40's for under 150 bucks.
I found one for 115, maybe they are so cheap because many can't connect firewire to their computers ?
I have Windows 10, and I am having issues with FW Active lock/sync
Windows 10 updates ruined it, now some games make me lose sync, and I can't hear anything until I restart. Namely Squad.
Sometimes I lose lock, until I start Cubase 5, and then I am all good again. Focusrite dropped official support since Windows 10 version 1809, and that was 2019. So yeah...I would just buy Scarlet or Clarett if you want Focusrite.
I am in the dilemma to find a right interface, even though I loved mine. I run SSL Alpha Channel preamp into the line in. Sound on the output is very strong on the speakers, and very clear.
Hard to compete. MOTU M4 sounds like 3 socks on a mic in comparison to Pro 40.
@@righteousone8454 Keeping Saffire MixControl running helps keep things stable when using the Pro 40 for general Windows audio. Also, if you're not connected with a TI-based FW interface, that can help as well
I can't hear the sound on any outputs on my saffire while recording. I am on macbook pro 2015 Mojave. Any ideas? Thanks
I hear warm and depth sound with saffire 24 is best
This is What my hear tells me
Saffire is very close to Clarett with Air off.
I prefer the Safire for drums it is what I use. The Clarrett is too abrasive
Nice! Yeah the Saffire does still sound great! What do you think of the Clarett with the AIR feature off?
@@bobdrums as you said there is very little difference
