Don’t be soarry, lol. I usually just replace the stock esc with a castle sidewinder and use the AE-5 with a similar battery plug set up and plug it into the 3rd channel. Motor leads to the winch motor. Keep your factory lights’ power supply and run your winch on 3s! 😉 You guys are doing a great job! Can’t wait to see next week!
Scale Builder's Guild It has been working for about 3 years now. I have the RC4WD winch. I think they have small motors rated for 12V for the small 3 Racing winches and I’m sure there are options for servo motors. If using a servo winch that was made from a standard 1/10 scale servo, the ESC replaces the board in the back. Just cut it out and hook motor leads up to esc. I’ll see if I can grab some links for those interested in set ups other than the RC4WD
Scale Builder's Guild rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F253118049921 See what you think about something like this. There are cheaper options and different speeds and sizes available. I think 600 to 1200 rpms are pretty common, I would opt for the slowest for testing the reduction gears in the servo or in the gear box of your servo winch. Doing some measurements of your original motor and reading the description is key with this route. The RC4WD warn winch seems to handle 3s fine right of of the package.
Finally got around to getting a Honcho and stumbled across this build series. Great work by both builders. I am dying to know more about that FJ60 body in the background though. TIA and keep up the good work.
I read through the comments and saw that nobody was able to answer the question to win the T-shirt. You're going to have to put it in next week's video so those of us who don't know what you're talkin about get to hear the story! Great job and great series with you and Harley! 👊😀👍
Loving the build series! Just ordered a t-shirt and a hoodie! Still hoodie weather here, but I'm gonna need the t-shirt for summer wheeling! Keep up the great work. Love the channel!!!
Awsome info on the winch control. Will come in handy when my son and I set up his truck with a winch. He is also installing a snow plow for a school project. 👍👍😎
Heyok are really good guys. They helped me out plenty. I have a few of their winch controllers but rarely use a winch. Everyone watching Josh's live stream tonight was asking for you to do a live stream. Please Matt, give us a live stream. Also, I like the way you talked to yourself.. nice touch.
Awesome choice on the solution with the Beef Patties and they came out amazing. Cool little detail. Thx again for a video full of useful tips and info. This is a theme in alot of your videos which to me is priceless!!✌
I know the "Builbers" thing is about a year old, haven't been on youtube that long but watched a heap of your episodes from back then. Just don't know the whole story behind it. Anyway, been playing around with the servo winch a lot for my Rotating Wrecker Project & have to say thanks again for the tip! It's going to work out wickedly for my stuff when I get to that point in the build.
Have you thought about taking a heat gun to the body and maybe adding a few small dents and dings? Should add to the realism and give it that trail traveled look.
Generally servo winches are more powerful because there's a ton more gear reduction and the motors are larger than a scale accurate winch. One exception is the RC4wd 8274. That winch is pretty great. But more like 9th or 8th scale.
Hoodie, T's and Flags ''O'' my. Thanks you for tuching on that drift thing, I have hered talk on it befor but I did not know what they were on about ! So I will do thingsthe way you just told me to do not the way I was going to.
External winches, except for the 8274 are fairly useless. And what headache? This is super easy! In any competition scenario, look to see how many folks are using an external winch. More often than not, you'll see a servo based winch doing duty.
I do agree with you, with that speed and strength, your custom built definitely is way better, as long you are happy, that the hobby is all about,, But For me, I prefer seeing the details, movement and the scale stuff, i am not making my truck do extreme competition. I,m doing this for the fun of it. Every person have different take on this hobby.
I have no idea..... I only got back into the Hobby last year. 😖 Great upgrades!! Homemade Servo Winches are always a good idea! Carmine 🚂 AKA PoorManRC
Does this location have four screw mounting points or just two towards the front end of the servo? Also noticed this location makes an interior more difficult to accommodate..
Great build and info. I want an SBG hoodie . . . so . . . did the word "Builbur" have anything to do with the consumption of Bourbon, etc.? I sure hope so.
So glad to have come across this channel. Informative, funny and interesting.. Thinking about buying my first Axial, this truck seems like a good place to start?
It certainly is a great place to start! Thanks for the feedback! If you've got a little more budget, check out the Jeep JK CRC 2018 edition. Great starting point as well.
its nice video i like the new winch i'm sorry your intro wasn't the greatest this week but i also understand its not that easy to pull it off like the Simpsons i wouldn't worry about it cause not many people can do intros like u weather its bad or good thats what keeps me intrigued i wonder every week whats he gonna do this week lol love your show until the next intro happy rc'n everyone
By eliminating the circuit board from the servo and turning it into essentially just a motor, have you increased the dependability of the servo? I guess what I am concerned about is the fact that it is indeed a "stock" servo and most of us can attest to their usual short lifespan.
Probably not. Stock servos are not always the best, we all know that. This was designed to be a budget alternative. Since the servo came with the truck, and steering is taken care of, let's recycle it for as long as it lasts. All you're eliminating is how the servo is controlled, you're not changing the effective strength or quality.
To be honest i never tested a servo winch this way but it works awesome for normal rc winchs and as led light kit controllers.. But i dont see why it wouldnt work as the servo winch only needs 2 wires hooked up and tje servo controller is one that goes to the receiver... Its pretty much that controller u using ..this is how the start making them plus it save u 40+$ in end
Ill look around for a old servo so i can test it out..i dont have any right now as i was hetting out of the hobby but the rc bug bit me again and slowly getting back n it with my son
To be honest man i never tried it with a servo ..but this do work for normal rc winchs..and as light kits.. But i dont see why it wouldnt work for a servo winch as u only needs the servo winch 2 wires as the servo controller well be the one connected to ur receiver...
Generally, I prefer to upgrade over time, as you get a better idea of the shortcomings of a truck by actually using it. Plus, it's easier to budget for!
I know the story behind the "Scale Builbers Guild" but I already ordered my T shirt and hoodie so I will let someone else win the awesome Builber shirt :)
Scale Builder's Guild I enjoyed hearing it at axial fest last year since I wasn’t sure if it was just something Richard came up with like “cwarling”... I don’t want to say to much and give it away
Another great video. On the point of winch controllers.... I use a 4 channel wireless remote relay set up with 2 channels to run the winch (in/out) and 2 channels for the main lights and the roof lights. Rather than paying stupid money (£35.00/$49)for something like the RC4WD 4 Channel Wireless Remote Light Bar Controller I got one from ebay fopr £6.00 (~$8.00). painted up as a fuel cell it looks pretty good and if you want you can use the smaller 2/3 channel versions. You can see it here: www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial-wraith/594887-black-two-rebirth-tk-422-a.html Keep up the great work.
Heyok makes a even better winch controller then the rc4wd. It can handle way more amps then the rc4wd controller. I believe price is around the same. Heyok gear are also available from rccrawler.com
Thanks for the reaction :-) if u buy A 1060 quicrun $20 its cheaper and i juise my 3th channel on 3 postions ;-) easy as that And its 60 Amps Bam !!! Not that the winch will ever use such power but you get the point
Just ordered a honcho....and started watching your videos for ideas. Cant wait to get it. Thanks for the videos. 👍👍👍
Amazing! Thanks for the feedback, and enjoy your truck!

There's still six days to figure it out. It's a tough one. ;) I will tell the story next week though. Cheers!

Amazing, thank you for supporting the SBG!
Awsome info on the winch control. Will come in handy when my son and I set up his truck with a winch. He is also installing a snow plow for a school project. 👍👍😎
Very cool, glad that I could help!

I have no friends, so I'm always talking to myself.
You can also make a winch controller out of a old servo ... I've made a few now and they work amazing..oh ya thumbs up great video Matt....👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'm curious. A servo to control a servo? Tell me more.
Awesome choice on the solution with the Beef Patties and they came out amazing. Cool little detail. Thx again for a video full of useful tips and info. This is a theme in alot of your videos which to me is priceless!!✌
That's amazing feedback, thank you so much!
I've been using the reefs 422hd and it's a great servo winch. Has the controller built in. And is amazingly strong
This budget build is great. Look forward to next week
Week 13 will be pretty awesome.
I know the "Builbers" thing is about a year old, haven't been on youtube that long but watched a heap of your episodes from back then. Just don't know the whole story behind it. That's awesome, glad I was able to help in some small way.
glad you got the winch working, im really looking forward to the cosmetic week coming up haha. Keep it up
So much makeup going on the truck it'll be like I'm in cosmetology class! ;)
i love the molotow pens! easiest to find at your local graffiti shop! the honcho is looking good 😊👍👍
Of course! I've got a great shop nearby, I'll check it out!
Have you thought about taking a heat gun to the body and maybe adding a few small dents and dings? Should add to the realism and give it that trail traveled look.
Interesting idea! I've done things like that in the past, unfortunately, my heat gun has gone on the fritz! I'll have to pick up another one.
it's been an awesome 12 weeks so far Thumbs up!! (i might have to change out to a servo winch now lol looks powerful)
Generally servo winches are more powerful because there's a ton more gear reduction and the motors are larger than a scale accurate winch. One exception is the RC4wd 8274. That winch is pretty great. But more like 9th or 8th scale.
Looking forward to more “looks upgrades” 😀 👍
Big week coming next week. *cough* BUMPER *cough*
Great video! Looking forward to seeing next weeks video.
Thanks Brad - lots of fun stuff happening next week.
Hoodie, T's and Flags ''O'' my. Thanks you for tuching on that drift thing, I have hered talk on it befor but I did not know what they were on about ! So I will do thingsthe way you just told me to do not the way I was going to.
Thanks Troi!
Like the look of the shirts.
Thanks!
Copland clip is brilliant!
My favourite.
If you add up all the parts for your custom winch, I rather buy the Rc4wd warn winch and wireless control, it looks better and less the head aches.
and half the pulling power
External winches, except for the 8274 are fairly useless. And what headache? This is super easy! In any competition scenario, look to see how many folks are using an external winch. More often than not, you'll see a servo based winch doing duty.
you said, doodie. giggadie.

Carmine 🚂 AKA PoorManRC
Thanks Carmine!
Just unhook the motor on the servo ur going to use for controller.. And solder the winch servo wire or leads to were the motor used to b..
Seems more complicated. Two servos to power one servo?
Does this location have four screw mounting points or just two towards the front end of the servo? Also noticed this location makes an interior more difficult to accommodate..
The RTR is different from the kit and required some modifying to get it to work. I can't remember exactly, as this was a long time ago. Sorry!
Again a great video. I really love this format
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for partaking with us grown kids!!
My absolute pleasure. All for the joy of this hobby. Cheers!
Liquid chrome is always close to my work bench!
So versatile, right?!
Uncanny realism!
Great build and info. I want an SBG hoodie . . . so . . . did the word "Builbur" have anything to do with the consumption of Bourbon, etc.? I sure hope so.
Nope, sorry John!
You should make a 1/10 scale flag, I would definitely put one on my trail truck

Scale Bilburs Guild sounds like something Hemistorm slurred one night after a run.
Sounds like, wasn't though!
Wouldn't any brushed esc with a drag brake work just fine for a winch controller??? Btw love the comedy. Quite entertaining.
Presumably, yes!
Great video, i learned something about that winch...
Fantastic! Glad I could help!
Builber sounds like a Richardism. I'm waiting for an SBG coffee mug before I order a shirt tho. Maybe save on shipping.
Added mugs to the store just for you. ;)
Scale Builder's Guild You the man Matt!

I can't always be the funniest guy in the world, but I try! Thanks for watching!
I thought it was funny!
How did you mount the servo winch into the chassis?
If you watch the video, you can see that I use the rear mounts from the steering servo to do double duty and mount the servo winch as well.
By eliminating the circuit board from the servo and turning it into essentially just a motor, have you increased the dependability of the servo? I guess what I am concerned about is the fact that it is indeed a "stock" servo and most of us can attest to their usual short lifespan.

It is! Shop tour video coming soon!

Sorry, no correct guess!
That’s ok matt your awesome bud I enjoy you videos and have for years
Ahh Molotow, only the best from products designed for vandalism 😜
You got that right!
Did you paint the back side of those Beef Party's? Would look Extremely un scale if you didn't.
Let's say yes. ;)
It was on live @ 945?
Nope!
Was the idea for the Scale Builders Guild deriveved from the Woodworkers Guild Of America ?
Ha, nope!
Can I get a origin of SP. for the word in question to receive a hoody that wont fit my large self?
did ya like what I did there?
Ha, yep, but sorry no hints!
I needed a new hoodie so...😁
Why
No correct guess!
I needed a new hoodie so... I ordered an SBG one doh!
Would you say $50 a week is better then saving up and spending $500 at once?
Generally, I prefer to upgrade over time, as you get a better idea of the shortcomings of a truck by actually using it. Plus, it's easier to budget for!
I think it has something to do with world of Warcraft, but the other guys comment on hemistorm makes more sense
