I have one. He's 27. I love him. He hates everyone except me, he likes my son who is just a little kid which shocked us all. He's so loving with me. Funny, insane, guy. Only says Hello which is ridiculous, haha. Likes to whistle. He's addicted to human food, he won't eat healthy which is frustrating.
I always hear that people LOVE their Amazon, but that the Amazon only likes 1 person. So lucky, so glad your Zon likes your son! And the diet… I know, parrots are good at making you feel like they won’t eat anything if you don’t give them what they want. however, you can insist… I don’t think human food is bad, as long as your Zon does not get meat (I know, loves it) or processed foods and ‘bad’ oils. It’s worth trying to at least modify his/her diet :)
I’ve been reading so much on the Mexican Red Headed Amazons for a few years now. It appears they are calmer than the “hot 3” I been reading about. I finally have a chance to get a baby that is being handfed. There are 2 extremely young babies. One has a vibrant red head and one seems a bit more dull red head. I just bought your Bliss Bond audio book yesterday. I want to be sure I can get through the hormonal stage. What are your thoughts on getting this baby? Is it still highly likely he will get aggressive eventually and bite me hard and continue to do this for a long time?
I have a strict diet for my parrots. My Red-head gets no seeds and no fruit. Not good for him/Amazons. Honestly, I don't really have hormonal birds. Ursulus is 4 or 5. I atritute not having hormonal issues to: (I'll aim to do a video on this) I'm calm with him. He has a cage-mate, another Amazon. Again, diet. So, I don't experience hormonal issues or biting. :)
The breeder is hand feeding now completely but will wean on no fruit and seeds either. She said sugars and high fat seeds are extremely bad for him. I would love if you made a video on this. I plan to set up a member account tonight. Thank you for your response.
I have videos on bringing home rescue parrot - I have rescued several species, including Amazons. If you do a search using the words “Parrot Bliss” and “rescue” then you’ll see several videos pop up :) Congratulations to you both on the new Amazon!
I have a Blue Front Amazon. He hardly talks at all, he is actually very quiet, and wants to murder everyone but me. I think it is very important that people consider their expectations when getting a bird, because there are NO guarantees - especially when it comes to talking. I know people with African Grey parrots who are not good talkers. You never know what kind of bird you are going to wind up with. Before I got mine, I considered all of my reasons for wanting a parrot, and decided that I would accept him for who he was and would be committed to him for as long as he lives. Sure, it would be cool if he talked more, but I don’t love him any less because he doesn’t.
We adopted our Red Lored Amazon Gus at 44years old. He is pretty quiet, doesn't play with toys and wants to murder everyone except my son. When my son left for ten days, Gus warmed up to my husband very nicely. As soon as my son got back home, Gus hated my husband again. It's nice to know that they CAN love again, but it has to be the right person.
@@katkat6466 very true. When I got Max, he just sat frozen in his cage, like a statue. I was concerned because both of his two previous owners had been men, and I did t know if that was what he would prefer. I didn’t push things, just hung out next to the cage every night, talking to him - then one night after a few weeks, he slowly climbed down to the side of the cage where i was, and put his head close to the bars, for me to pet him. We have been pals ever since. Thanks for adopting!
I agree- the talking is fantastic, but it doesn't make the bird's personality. They are so much more than their ability to talk. When you genuinely love them, as you do, the relationship is incredible. Besides, hearing "Hello!" over and over is over-rated! LOL
They can love again - but they are programed to have 1 mate. And boy, are they loyal to that idea! It is super-typical that they love only 1 person and are anything but kind with others... :)
So, you've had him for 16 years? I'm not surprised about him being that way with outsiders, they are loyal to their mate/flock. But when you are in with them, they are awesome, right?
A lot of exotic bird stores don’t mind if people come in and spend time with the birds, it’s usually good for the birds. Try visiting a pet store. Also, you could volunteer at a rescue. I’m guessing they would let you spend time after your volunteer.
What you feed him, my Amazon is driving me crazy with so much screaming what can I do with that. He also hates water bottles and I had him in my should when I grab one, short story I scream a lot of the pain after he grab my neck for touching the water bottle
They don't do well all alone (without another bird) unless you give them A LOT of time and attention. How old is your Amazon? Have you had him for his whole life?
I just rescued a BFA aprx 6 yrs old ?female and I need help. Rescued her on 1/30/22. My problem is that she will NOT step up for me so how do I get her used to me if her cage is being kept in her birdie room?

@@peppytheecky1703 here’s the thing, since I’m not an avian vet, I don’t really understand why his poops are so frequent and so liquid. What I have learned is that that’s not how parent poops should be. Of course, I don’t know if there can be exceptions. For that reason, if I were you, I would get him checked out. Liquid poops are supposed to be diarrhea. I would also remove fruits from his diet. I think that may contribute, not sure. You may be able to have your vet look at the droppings, and your vet may say it’s fine, which would be an inexpensive vet visit. Just the office call. Then you would have peace of mind.
