Looks fine to me , any plumber would admit they occasionally get the odd leak . As a retired electrician all trades can have problems but as my old boss would say anyone can get problems , the skill comes in as to how you get over them . Best wishes as always 😀👍👍👍
Wise words - cheers!
Leaking plug. The epitome of “you had one job to do” 😂
😂😂
I also attached the flexis to bog standard isolation valves but found that they leaked, when I took it apart I noticed that the rubber was cut by the sharp machined metal on the isolation valve end that is designed for compression onto pipe. You can buy ones with flat end on one side that won't cut the rubber. Personally I got fed up with the quality of the parts you get these days and fitted crome JG Speedfit isolators everywhere, expensive but worth it in my opinion.
Andy Mac....you're a man after my own heart ! I hate wasting perfectly good parts that will function perfectly well but are not aesthetically pleasing. If you get fed up, you can always change but, methinks you'll close the doors and forget about the piping !
Exactly - life's too short! 👍😂
Can’t beat a nice bit of diy plumbing. Love the troll impressions 😂😂
😁😁 Gotta love them trolls! 😂
Well done, waste not, want not. And the most important one: File to fit, paint to hide. ❤
Exactly! 😂
Having two cats I wouldn't have thought you'd be troubled by mice. Oh, and with regards to those sink drainage fitting bolts I find the seven-sided 20p piece is a perfect fit so I always keep one under the kitchen sink so I know where to find it!
Good plan! It's very possible there was a mouse but the cats ate it. 😂👍
I'm glad you mentioned the c&b 🤣🤣🤣
😁👍
As a plumber I've heard slot about these style taps popping off and leaking...
Great stuff as always Andy. I love the way you continually re-purpose stuff. Saves money and avoids landfill. Win win!
Cheers - hate throwing stuff away! 😂👍
Hi Andy, you are an excellent tradesman and I have learned alot from many of your videos from the renovation start to now. I look forward to your next project. Best regards from Greg in Melbourne Australia.
It's coming along really well.
Cheers - getting there!
I've found it really satisfying to use up some wood I bought for a scaffold so completely understand the bit about the pipe colour.
😂👍
Nicely done, mate
Cheers bud!
Great work. Love the zebra style waste pipe. Very trendy.
Cheers! Trend setting here! 😂😂
Little tip when fitting those tiny grub screws to the tap make sure the plug is in the basin so when you drop one it is in the sink, simplees!
Good tip! 😂
I was thinking exactly the same just before you put the C&B annotation😂 🐓&⚽
Oops! 😁
Great work! On the matter of the sink, we have one that came with a similar “sponge sealy kind of thing”, on installation the plumber remarked that he had problems with it and didn’t trust it anyway if he hadn’t, so he sealed around and under the sink edge with silicone. It’s cheap insurance anyway.
Good luck with getting a spare part out of Bristan if you need it ten years down the line!
The cartridges are normally pretty standard (ish). 👍
Hi andy great video. Always makes me laugh we both seem to be doing the exact refurbs on our house at thr same time.
Very true with buying good products. I use mcalpine alot as know they are very good for wastes. Their clicker waste was £25, their top access waste for bath is brilliant.
Keep up the good work
Hi Andi Mac love your videos and the great lengths you go to in explanation. I think you may have fitted the black washer in the wrong place. It looked to me as though you had it under the sink when I believe it should be on the top. Please feel free to correct me if my eyesight has let me down 😵💫. Keep up the good work.
We are all here, because we find things like this interesting to watch and/or entertaining for whatever reason, but we are here non the less and even better, watch someone else work, while we drink beer .... 😁
😂👍😎
I reckon the air pressure from opening the door to the room blew the rockwool into the floor void.
Was too tightly packed in for it to budge without being physically pulled out. Mystery!
Great job Andy. Just to let you know those tap tails( flexi hoses} should be replaced every 5 years, but you would have known that 😂 Great channel
Cheers bud!
👍👍👍Thanks
Nice laminar flow there.
REALLY impressed with the laminar flow of this tap! 👍👍
Good video Andy. I like the fact that you used plumbers mate on the waste. It seems like everyone on the web is using silicone these days which is fine for the install but a pain if you need to take the thing off if it clogs up or needs changing.
Defo! I only really use silicone for more permanent stuff. 👍
isolation valves have tapered ends, so if tightened bit too much it will cut through the rubber seal
Yup, defo don't over tighten! 👍
@@GosforthHandyman You can get isolation valves without tapered ends.
Most likely one of the cats, ours would take similar out to stick a paw down the hole
It was boxed in at the time, so cats couldn't get in. All very odd!
Across the pond our water supply shutoff valves have handles. Interesting.
I always fit valves with handles in the UK. The internals are far superior in terms of shutting off the water as well
Cool! 😎
Hi there, great video as always. I’ve not seen the use of yacht varnish before to seal the edges seems like a great idea. Would you still use it if you were putting edging on? (Then let it dry and glue edging on?). How many coats? Thanks so much!
Nice video Andy! The whole project is looking great.
Constructive tip if connecting tap connectors like that.
You should use flat headed isolation valves designed for this purpose, normal isolation valves can cause leaks after time due to the tapered ends.
Cheers! These have quite a rounded edge (not sharp) so as long as they're not over-tightened they're generally OK. But yeah, ideally use flat-faced. 👍👍
Or use a file to flatten them?
Sure I've seen that done before.
@@JasGaweraor you can also get tap tail adapters that fit into the isolation valves and have a flat surface to meet with the gasket on the tap tails.
I ended up with waste piping exactly similar to yours under a sink I put in. Theoretically you could have created be a P trap (as opposed to an S trap) that could syphon and suck the water out of the trap allowing sewer gasses to come through. but after a couple of years mine's not been a problem.
👍
Lovin' the pee take of the armchair know-it- alls 😂😂😂😂
👍😁
Naaa, you get a beer from me! Keep I practical and the waste down! Man I'd like to be a friend of ya!
👍😎
Hi Andy. I appear to be your first like and comment. It looks good to me. I may have mentioned, after I didn’t have the ‘plumber’ back to finish my shower room I did it myself and, after discovering I could also fit a bathroom, my Son in Law telephoned and asked if he could help me fit his bathroom. It was MFI so you can work out how long it’s been and it’s still going strong. Keep up the good work and let’s be nice to each other. 🌞
Great stuff - cheers Ray! 👍😎
Hi Andy. Like the idea of the tap fittings. I bet they only have one allen bolt instead of two to prevent some lesser mortals from tightening them up unevenly 🤔
Possibly! Very impressed with it! 👍
Looks nice! And good to know about the Bristan tap. Love your WhataboutGuy commenter voice 🤣
Ha ha thank you Brooke! 😁👍
Nice job! I have some similar plumbing to do under basin but the existing pipework into the wall is smaller than all the bits I have just bought 😩
Noo! Good luck!
should have fitted the sink waste and taps before you put the sink in the worktop.......... and that blue paper towel is ideal for checking for leaks as it changes from light blue to dark blue when it gets wet. And finally the deburing tool you used on the copper pipe also works on waste pipe..........
👍
Hi Andy, thanks for all the great content! Which pipe would you recommend for a diy'er who wants to stay away from soldering copper pipe? It looks like use use JG Speedfit, and I've had others recommend copper press fit, or Zurn pexB... but they all have different methods and I'm trying to minimise the chance of me messing things up ha! Thanks
Although you might find them difficult or expensive , and prone to chipping , if you dont like stainless steel sinks a rolled edge enamel sink / drainer I think is better. reason , we can see here any water on the worktop part either needs toweling off, or the only way is down to the floor, likewise once there is overspill from that drop in sink/drainer cannot be pushed back over the "lip" of the sink
Be careful , I’ve seen a couple of those smart taps break on the Allen screw and come away..💦
Cheers.... 👍
Cheers! Think they've refined the design of them!
Alls going well Andy, quite like the Bristan tap concept. Thanks for the video.👍👍
No worries - quite impressed with it!
First!
Ha - well done Keith!! 😂😂😎
Well done, I think the system to fit this tap makes life a bit easier as you can tighten the holding washer from the top.
The nicer Grohe taps, not those used in project builds which have traditional fiber washer valves, but ceramic discs, aren't cheap, but they are good.
Had some cheaper ceramic taps but these started to leak and drip after less than 10 years and can't be repaired.
I ordered a toilet bowl, hand wash basin and a kitchen sink together with taps and plumbing from Perrin&Rowe and BB Edwardian, I believe these are both UK brands.
What do you think of these? should be good quality judging by the prices.
Kitchen sink is Shaws, toilet is Imperial and basin is also BB Edwardian, all retro 20s-30s stuff.
Great stuff - haven't used them much to be honest! Haven't heard any negative reports. 👍
Has the sink exploded yet Andy, must have burst into flames minimum 😂😂
Still OK, amazingly! 😂👍
Hi Andy - slightly off topic but you probably used one on this project - any recommendations on laser levels ? Keep up the great videos !
It's always a problem deciding what is really worth spending money on and what isn't, that Bristan waste is in another league than the WIckes one, probably cost 10x, but in the scheme of things, also how do your value your time and stress levels ?
On the other hand, I totally agree about re-using what you can, I'm glad I'm not the only one with numerous boxes of waste fittings, brass & copper parts, electrical fittings etc etc.
I love this Andy - "the only black bit of plastic that is visible is that join there, and you can't see it !" 😂😂😂
Hope it isn't, but could easily be mice, especially with a suspended floor, little buggers get in everywhere including limbo-ing under my garage door with only an 6mm gap, and they love anything they can use as cosy bedding !
You need a labelled plastic box under that sink, with the aerator remover tool, and two Allen keys in so you know where they are when you need to service it !
Yeah, I thought mice... but would have thought they'd have come up to get some grub from the trap. No sign! 😁👍
Once watched a rat corkscrew out of a hole in a walI hadn't seen was there, was maybe big enough for a pencil🤣
Andy,
The utility sink;
have you put the reinforcement plate in upside down?
If so, was it intentional, due to the pressed ridges, of the sink?
I once fitted an easy fit tap on my old bathroom basin. Can't remember why but had to take the tap off, but when putting it back I turned the water on before fitting the grub screw. Tap flew a couple of meters in the air and then landed back cracking the brand new basin :-( . In defence of my stupidity I was being nagged at the time. Was a bit scary though seeing the tap fly through the air under water pressure at high speed!
Oh my god!! 😬😬
1:36 grohe is a good choice, I also bought these brands' produts. But which of the two grohe ? hansgrohe or grohe ?
Normally Grohe... but I think Hansgrohe are decent too!
I’ve noticed a significant drop in Wickes products for some time. I know longer use them for anything apart from some timber
Rarely go now. Timber quality has been horrendous for me. 😢
@@GosforthHandyman
Wickes is great for wood…… if you’re doing lots of bends. And more knots than a Boy Scout would know. The overall quality of wood in all the DIY sheds is shameful
I'd guess at pressure from opening and closing the door for the missing insulation
Was tightly packed in so don't think so!
When you bedded the waste into the sink with the compound I presume you did not use the white gasket? Also did you drain the water from the toilet sink after isolating the water to prevent air locks when you turned it back on?
Yeah, white gasket went in the bin. 👍
Andy..... I will NOT use Wickes for any reason.. Plaster, tile adhesive etc ( anything powdered) is always old stuff. They are a nightmare if anything goes wrong. And as for Trade Point.... do not get me started. Bob (Weston super Mare)
Interesting - heard many similar reports. Such a shame it's gone so down hill! 😢
It looks like the brass part that clamps to the sink has two little recesses that you've oriented towards the front. Are these supposed to locate the two grub screws at the back of the tap body to give a positive locking action rather than have the grub screws grind on the surface of the fixed part? That might explain why one of the brass sections is loose; it's meant to be for the hot side to allow for expansion.
Can go either way - dimples on both sides. 👍
Fitted a Bristan Easyfit tap a while ago and it proved a good idea as the seals failed due to Limescale so fitting a new one took no time at all. Not sure if Bristan will stop making them as they do with their products, time will tell.
Interesting! Which seals failed?
@@GosforthHandyman The ones inside the tap, led to the water dripping and then running. Apparently the quarter turn taps don’t like hard water. Bristan after some toing and froing (never had a good experience with Bristan after sales) sent a set out which I fitted in the old tap and put it aside, you know as you do “just in case”. Changed to a cartridge type now which are more tolerant of hard water or so I’m told. Love the content of your videos by the way. Learning a lot.
Wickes have down hill badly in terms of product quality. This has been going on for a few years now. I no longer use them.
Also Bristan taps have really nailed the easy install process as well as being good quality
Really impressed with the Bristan! As I say, possibly better than Grohe! 👍
last time I had to use a short section of black waste pipe between white fittings I wrapped it in white electrical tape - perfect crime!
If it works! 😁👍
If it wasn’t mice moving the insulation could it have been the cats? They might have snuck in there unnoticed and I can see that being something they could have pawed at out of curiosity.
What about the cats??? Could they have gotten into the batting under the sink?
No - there was no sign of the insulation anywhere. Total mystery! 😂👍
When you fitted the tap body on and did grub screws are the brass bottom bit wrong way round so grub screws locate in the two dimples?
You can fit it either way - there's dimples on both sides. 👍
Just curious. Is there a reason/regulation that the quarter-turn isolation (shut-off) valves don't have a built-in lever? In the US it is common for such valves to have the lever as part of the mechanism.
Over here 99% of the time they're the ones I've used (which I happened to have in stock). There's various designs with levers and handles which I do prefer, but I just wanted to use these up. 👍😁
@@GosforthHandyman Thank you for the response.
“Champion”
👍😁
Have you got a link to the sink?
It was a while ago but think we got it from B&Q.
I have seen people drain a sink into a bucket to then dump the bucket in the sink. 😞🙂
😂
@@GosforthHandyman I was poised waiting for you to tip the bowl into the sink. Disappointed!!!!
WD40, the only lubricant which turns into a threadlocking compound. Seems ideal to me.
26:36 😂😂😂
😁
Hi Andy, I’ve had a couple of the Brittain Easy fit taps leak from the connection between the tap and the base. When they fail, whoa do they fail 😮! Ended up swapping both to “normal” kitchen taps. Will be interested to see your experience.
Sounds scary! This seems solid... so far! 🤞
Nahhh - won't be mice! Probably hoofing great rats!!! Gonna need a bigger trap.
They'll keep the cats fed!
Can you advise internal dimensions of this toilet room?
About 90cm x 150cm 👍
@@GosforthHandyman Thank you, much appreciated.
Has one of the cats had it?
There was sign of it! 😂
I am thinking of doing some plumbing renovations on my house. I hate spending money on tools. Can I borrow some of your tools?
😂 gosforthhandyman.com/product/t-shirt-borrow-tools/
I’m not sure I agree with your logic with regards to spending more on top end branded tops. Yes, you are likely to be able to get spare parts if they fail. However, not only are unbranded taps perhaps cheaper to replace than the spare parts on the expensive brands, the cheaper brands tend to use generic Readly available spare parts.
The branded ones tend to last longer. Sometimes you can hit lucky on unbranded ones using standard parts, but pretty rare in my experience.
@@GosforthHandymanthe cheaper ones - should they fail and can’t be repaired - can be repurchased several times before the cost of the more expensive brands is matched.
Maybe a little chicken took the insulation? 😊
It was boxed in at the time! Very odd! 🤪
Maybe one of your cats pulled out your rock wool
If the cat scratched it out from above then it would probably be in the utility room. I reckon some little critter has taken it from underneath for nesting/bedding material.
Yup, there was no sign of it in the room! Very odd!
I remember when I was leakproof. Sad face.
😂😢
You should not use wd40 as a lubricant 😂😂😂
😂😂
I prefer GT85
I've found wikes to be rubbish 🗑
Wokes.. I mean Wickes have been a bit rubbish for a while, probably too focussed on ideology rather than quality products for their customers.
Shame - was always my default shop for DIY stuff! Too many product returns. Always seems dead now. 😢
