Sometimes I feel like Chef John is a culinary werewolf, and every full moon he has to make something that looks *kinda* like it came out of a seventies dinner party. ...okay time to stop kidding myself, I'd absolutely have those.
Halfway through this, I realized that we have a cast iron cornbread mold/pan that makes 7 cob-shaped mini loaves. I'm now committed to using that to enclose hot dogs cut in half to get even closer to the mall corn dog experience! Thanks for the inspiration!
Love the phrase "mix this with reckless abandon." Like several of your recipes, this one has now been saved into the appropriate folder, and will be made!
Already baked this with little twist recipe and turn out so good! So here’s my modification recipe : 1 cup all purpose flour 1 cup cornmeal (im using smooth cornmeal) 1 1/2 cup milk Plain yoghurt around 3 tbsp Oregano (as u like) Chopped onion ( 2 tbsp ) Garlic (1 tsp ) And the rest is same 😁 Before that im soaked cornmeal into my millk around 5 mins then u just adding the rest 😊 Thank you for this recipe cheff john always love ur recipes
I'm making these because I'm bummed at not be able to go to the fairs this year. I rarely had them at the fairs, but that's beside the point. I'd even eat a deep fried Twinkie at this stage.
This recipe is exactly for me. You are a genius. I don't like fried foods. I am afraid to cook with oil due to a past experience. I have an electric cupcake baker and I made corn muffin turkey hot dogs today. I made 10 muffins. I ate four or five. I shared with my dog he likes turkey dogs and he enjoyed pieces of corn muffin. I used Betty Crocker corn muffin mix. Very easy. My muffins were baked in 12 minutes. I didn't even have to turn on the oven.😊
I have been making these for years. After I remove them from pans I brush them with olive oil and put the back in the to get crunchy. You can also do this on a pan on the stove.
Oh I'm definitely going to make these. I love homemade corn dogs and I like this method because it doesn't involve the mess and hassle of deep frying. I'm gonna make a spicy version with hot links and chopped roasted jalapenos in the batter too. Another version I'll add honey to the batter for that state fair flavor. Thanks for a great, simple and inexpensive recipe and cooking method!
This reminds me of a sandwich that was from a road side restaurant down in N.C. called “pig in a pup”. It was pulled pork inside a bun sized hush puppy. The trick being to make the hush puppy hold its bun shape and not fall apart
Food Wishes. Sir, 'you have the Very Best Cooking Show around. Your Hummer is Top Notch. Thank you very much for sharing your Knowledge with me and the entire World. I do hope you keep doing this.
I love how much you like county/state fairs!!!!! I’ve gone to the fair for my birthday every year since I was a kid. So sad I can’t this year.😢. Thank you for all you do, and I’ve already made your lemonade!! Unbelievable!! It’s like I was there!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🥳
Just made these the other day for my husband's YOYO (Your On Your Own) lunches - mistakenly used a regular sized muffin pan - still so good and easy to heat up for a quick lunch. We both enjoyed them! I'll add more hot dog to the regular sized next time. Thanks for the recipe, and thanks for always giving us a laugh along with instruction.
Everything is better with bacon. I made these with bacon wrapped cocktail sausages (i.e. short hot dogs). Next time I'll put crumbled crispy bacon in the batter and use the bacon grease from cooking the bacon instead of oil in the batter. I'll also use small muffin cups instead of standard sized ones to get more of them. Win, win, win!
You could call them Belly Button Corn Dogs. I just watched a TV recipe by Pati Jinich for Mexican belly button soup, where the creamy smooth pinto bean based soup had large round dumplings with a depression in them like a belly button that caught some of the soup, it looked comforting.
Good call on the mustard, Chef John. According to Dirty Harry, life long hot dog aficionado, "Nobody, I mean NOBODY puts ketchup on a hot dog." - Sudden Impact (1983) - Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan
I have my niece and nephew tomorrow. I was wondering what I should make them for dinner. And boom, Chef John saves the day once again! (Gonna make an extra tray of these for myself to enjoy as well)
That swan really was magical
I know!!!
Nice!
The sugar swan even had an eye!
And the egg looked like a peep!
right until he blasted it's head off

We are in a new moon right now 🤔 I wonder if it does the reverse effect 😂
Has he made a Jell-O salad??
Yea, I was gonna mention those God-awful, SAVORY, molded dishes. . . like using ham or other meats. YEECK!
@@edmundkonkolich8743 Check out EmmymadeinJapan for some of those funky 70's recipes. Yes, like a lime Jell-o with olives and god know what!

Jeff Wilson Great idea!
Genius!
Great idea!
I have one of those pans as well.
That was my thinking
When he "missed" the cupcake hole I lost it
It happens to everyone.
Oops 🤣
The weiner hurts a little when the hole gets missed
I've heard
it was the "whoops, there we go"
@@1daughter1son yes it's true you can't bend or smash an uncooked weiner.
If anyone could make Corn Dogs more fun it's Chef John.

Grania52, exactly!
@@cynthiamorton3583 I'm actually thinking of dunking them in a Margarita 😜
Looks so good. I’m thinking to use pancake batter and maple sausage links for breakfast.

No kids at home. Will be making these for the “big” kid at home, me!!
Yep, and by big kids, we mean we're eating all of them by ourselves. 😂
Same here :D
Anton Boludo Yes A, I’m a 70 year old 12 year old, lol
Wasted 10lbs of sugar. Closest I got was an egret.
Valiant effort.
😂😂😂
Big Sugar loves you!
Egret regret!
E....for egret.
Chef John, you speak to my heart!
THAT SWAN THOUGH! magical
Looks good. You're right about the mustard. Thanks
Love the recipe and the SWAN. Nice magic.
*So easy, so simple,*
*So appetizing!*
*No messy frying*
*Just the right recipe*

I make these. I call them "belly buttons." They are great for kids on Halloween.

I just ran out of corn meal! I am totally making this. This weekend! Thanks CJ!

And as always, enjoy!!
I did thank you 😊
*giggles as Chef John misses the cup part*
Yess with honey mustard 😩❤️😩 gosh
Muffin pans really are great for so many things! 😊 Great video!

There should be a muffin pan in every kitchen 😺 whether you bake muffins or not 😸
@@artedejali I have 2 pans and never baked and traditional muffins 😀😁😂🤣
He really did make the sugar look like a swan. That blew my damn mind.
I am totally doing these but substituting lil’ smokies jalapeño cheddar for the hotdogs. Ty chef!
those look wonderful! I want to try these! thanks Chef John!
My grandsons will thank me profusely. 😊

Watching from Kenya..
This is innovation at its finest. Thank you, John.
Thanks Chef John! Best corn dogs ever!
My favorite! Thank you, Chef John!
Chef John always killing the cooking game!
Amazing channel !!! watching from England !!!!!
if you toss the hotdogs in corn starch first, the batter will stick to the surface of the hotdogs and enrobe them.
Ooh - next batch.
I guess that would explain why they came out of the oven a bit...uh...disrobed....
We tried them today. Yum. Better than regular corn dogs.
I'm gonna try this on my birthday, thank you Chef!
I really appreciate this baked, not fried, recipe. Oh, only mustard for me too!
Try honey
The best 'fair' food is funnel cakes... but corndogs are a close second, and cotton candy is a must-have-once-a-year treat.

Youre so creative, chef J.

Hot take: an orange mixed dip of ketchup and mustard is where it's at for any and all small-scale hot dog snacking.
LOOKS GREAT AND SIMPLE
Very tempting 😍 with both dips😘
Being the non-prude in the room, some of these muffins look something like my wife sees when I get out of the shower... Bon appétit!
What
I was thinking this looked like a briss whack a mole.
That's what I thought!!! LOL!!
Fantastic idea! Love it 💖

Yes thank you Chef John, this is just what I was waiting for👍
They are good dipped in Mayonnaise too!

Funny, we made corn dogs lately since our county fair was cancelled. These look alot less messy. Thanks! Mustard only for us!
Haven't had these since the 80s!
