My mom had OCD and would obsessively clean just like this, minus the abuse. She would hyperventilate and cry before guests would come over because she wouldn’t think the house was clean enough, even if it was spotless. It’s sad how unaware people are about the seriousness of mental illnesses and how they can ruin your life

    • @retroguy9494

You're lucky! With MINE, I GOT the abuse. With HER ocd she used to pull every plug in the house before going to bed. Back in the day before memory retention in VCR/DVD players, I would have to reprogram the things each time I wanted to watch a movie.

Her face as she looks at Joan after being told to clean the mess she didn’t make
    “How...?”
    “Figure it out.”
Followed by the fear and guilt of her brother offering to help something he wasn’t involved in
    4:14 “Jesus Christ...”

I've heard more than one friend and or guest of the Crawford household give testimony that it wasn't comfortable being there because of Joan's obvious OCD and the way she insisted on the most utmost perfection from her children. There was a creepy, sadistic and sickening way to her method of abuse towards Christina and Christopher that was also witnessed by these people. But her need for perfection was really only the tip of the ice berg. It's certainly not easy to live with a parent who has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder but not all of them are abusive. It was Joan's narcissism, her own pain, alcoholism and probably other issues we'll never know the root cause of that made her treat her children the way that she did. I don't doubt Joan wanted children and wanted to love them but children begin to have minds of their own at a young age and they make noise and get dirty and make mistakes...That wasn't something Joan could handle or control. I believe a friend of Joan Crawford's summed it up best by saying that Joan wanted to know what it was to be a mother, she wanted that fulfillment of having a baby but it wasn't best for her to be a mother.

To be fair, there are many lazy people in the world that do not do the simple things you ask them to do unless you are screaming at them. When Joan hit Christina and said “you love making me hit you” I related. My mom was a very low-motivation person and many times I would do what ever she asked me to do, but when I needed her to do something for me, she would either say she would do it and never do it, or do it so badly that it embarrassed me in front of people that were important to me. If I screamed at her when no one was looking and made her feel bad, that problem didn’t happen again. She always knew how to do it well, she just didn’t have the motivation to do it well unless she knew she would get screamed at if it was done poorly. She screamed at me plenty of times so it was acceptable. Some people are stubborn and don’t care that they are embarrassing you - you have to come down hard on them.

This is what Christina called in the book "The Night Raids." This was actually two of those incidents in one scene. In the book, the coat hanger incident and the floor cleaner incident happened individually. The coat hanger incident didn't happen in the way the film portrayed it, in the book Joan basically trashes Christina's closet and bedroom, after that she grabbed her and dumped her into the floor telling her to clean up the mess and stormed out. The floor cleaner incident actually happened in Joan's dressing room, not in the bathroom.

We dont know the truth, this movie was turned into a soap opera even tina said. However, thing to Joan's childhood. Her father abandoned her, she was bullied, dirt poor, her step daddy was a fraud, she was sexually assaulted for years thinking he was her real father, her mother didn't care if she lived or died and blamed Joan for the abuse. She was so poor she cleaned extremely for other people to meet a minimum wage if not lower. She was assaulted and even thrown down the stairs of one of the homes she cleaned in. Once SHE was a poor little girl. I believe she wasnt a good mother and she's a cunt for what she put them kids through. However, I cant really blame her. She was so destroyed by the age of 11, FUCKING 11. She thought being young and famous would make her exempt from the abuse she receive. She thought people would love her, and they did, but that wound of hurt could never been sewn shut. She never recovered. Her trauma was severely complex and alcoholism took over in her later years. Crawford sadly didn't know real mothering. She wasn't a MONSTER inherently. She was broken. If anyone, blame her own mum. ❤❤

She wasn't using Comet. Joan Crawford was fond of "Old Dutch Cleanser" which was specifically formulated for tile and linoleum floors, so as not to scratch them. It's still manufactured today, and it's a very fine powder with very little abrasives in it. Comet is very abrasive and would have scratched the shit outta that floor.

Good Point but it's funny how the powder between the 2 look close and it still would have made for a good commercial if either "Old Dutch Cleanser" or any cleaning company would have jumped on it.

I get freaked out on my apartment being clean, especially if my mother in law visits. She's filthy and leaves shit marks on the toilet seat, nor does she wash her hands. It's quite repulsive.

Same but i think this is "reasonable" ocd. When anger, frustration & trauma come into play though it gets more complex
