In this edition of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Nightwish's cover of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. This live performance is from Octover 2005, featuring their original lead singer Tarja Turunen.
Reference Video: • NIGHTWISH - The Phanto...
It's funny because I LOVE Phantom of the Opera and this is nowhere near my favourite version of it, lack of pipe organs for one, lol.
I'm fairly certain the original starts in Dm though, then to Gm, Em, Fm Gm before finishing in Am with the last note a high E.
Nice reaction and I look forward to more Nightwish ones.
I had to check this...you're right! Kudos and thanks for the correction.
@@Doug.Helvering Thanks, I had to double check myself - paused the video and got my copy of the score, lol.
Glad you liked this song.
@@laalratty I just remember playing the main riff in C minor in high school...old memories die hard...
@@Doug.Helvering Tarja Turunen does this song still with her band , male vocalist do not match Marko Hietalas voice and also Tarja does not go as high at the end .

One answer to the question of "Which Nightwish singer is the best?" that is fair, safe, and close to the truth is: Marco.
Yeah I feel like he is not appreciated enough in these videos :D Also, compared to this era, he is often just mixed as a background vocalist when he sings next to Floor.
No.
he used to be the best for me also now he left nightwish and i can say NW is rip to me
its true, LOL
They were at their peak with Tarja and Marco
"I'm not going anywhere NEAR that discussion..." That's the mark of a wise man. Jokes aside, I really appreciate your stance on this. I think we could all benefit from a little less comparing and a little more enjoying excellent artists for who THEY are.
Agreed 100%.
I have seen every version of the band so far (We will see what happens with Marko leaving as I have tickets to the first show in L.A. this year) and every singer and member has been amazing in their own right.
Smart to stay away from the argument. It's the music world's version of "Coke vs Pepsi"
@@HauntSlider Only difference is that Floor and Tarja are both great... Pepsi not so much. :P
By the way, Floor and Tarja are friends in real life.
Well I'm a fan of both of them, so I get upset no matter which one someone deems "superior" to the other. Their voice qualities are so different that trying to make a competition out of it is always somewhat forced.
For me it's Marko's singing that makes this my favourite version of the song, all the other phantom's I've heard have been too clean they don't sound like dangerous guys that have been hiding in the basement nursing their obsession for decades.
There is a version by Lacrimosa, where Thilo really sounds like the ultimate madmen. Even more than Marko. But I prefer Marko's singing as he sounds dangerous, mad, but still kind of ... attractive? I mean, the Phantom once was the star of the opera. ;-)
@@AleDrinkingSpirit will check that out.
6:39 "I imagine that's the kinda sound that Lloyd Webber wanted to have..."
Yes - Andrew Lloyd Webber has actually said on record that he heard this version and it is his favorite!
Can you tell me the source? I've heard of it, but I never actually found where he said it.
Lloyd Webber wanted the sound that Sarah Brightman had, one has to assume. Unless, like me, you think he cast Sarah Brightman because she was his partner. I never liked her voice.
Actually, maybe it's just my ears, but that high D sounded just a tad flat to me.
@@NickBR57 no - not the voice, we meant the instruments.
@@andrewawakened628 Ah, sorry, misunderstood
@@NickBR57 A.L.W. had said a few times and even magazine interviews in print that he wished he wrote and recorded the song the way NIGHTWISH did it.
Marko and Tarja. Best version ever. Still gives me goosebumps.
Actually No... We don't want you to compare Floor and Tarja. We are aware that both are great, both are different with different strengths, and we are just happy that we got to enjoy these two GREAT singers sing with this band we love. Same with Marco, who's also an outstanding singer.
Well said!
I liked Annette too. She was fantastic on the albums.
@@richardgoddard37 I didn't start listening to Nightwish until Annette had her second album with the band so she was the first for me. Then I backtracked to Tarja and fast-forwarded to Floor. It was like the Insidious movies 😂 for me.
@@joeysmith5086 same
@@joeysmith5086 Amaranth was the first Nightwish song I heard, and I remember loving it and just binging the back catalogue with Tarja. Annete's voice is nice, and fits Dark Passion Play well. Tarja is a great operatic singer. Then you've got Floor who is the best of both worlds imo and I actually prefer to both. Which is a shame as I haven't liked any of the music they've made with Floor.
Don't be afraid to pause to talk and get out what you want to say so you don't feel rushed to keep paying attention to the music while getting your thoughts out. We're here to listen to what you have to say more than the music good sir.
agree! BUT i think he might evade a little copy righ by speaking over the song, we have heard all this songs plenty of times.
@@chilesuicmez That's just old ladies story. UA-cam Content ID can successfully detect the audio no matter how much you pause.
I agree, every reactor should pause as much as they need for *their own* comments. Fans should go to original video or album if they just want to hear the original performance. That said, some fans seem to think that if you pause you should rewind e.g. 5 seconds (press cursor left button on your keyboard) before continuing to be sure not to miss anything.
With Tarja...❤ That was Fall, Helsinki, Finland 2005, "End of an Era" Tour concert. I was 18 then, I'm now 37. Marko said "Well alright" in a slow roll of the tongue at the end. This was the last time we heard the Siren, the Viking, the Pirate, the Vampire & the Zombie all perform together. I'll never forget it... Cheers from Portland, OR! 🍻😎 Thank you for sporting this reaction vid!!!
Honestly I think that we Nightwish fans are blessed to have three amazing lead female vocalists
2*
3*
And then to also have/have had Marco.
Anette was horrible singer in Nightwish. She was just like a ABBA singer.
@@ACorpseWithoutSoul Abba singers are great. And I guess you don't know anything about singing cause Anette in her style was amazing.
Marko said Alright!
Yep, but I first heard it as "all rise!" Which is some how far cooler
I believe it really is 'all rise' which would make sense at least as a straight Finnish-to-English translation, calling everybody to stand up in case someone managed to stay seated during that.
It's definitely "all right". A 't' sound can be somewhat 's' sounding when you drag it out but it would have been much clearer if he actually said "rise".
@@adamtaylor9617 or "ohhhh riiisssse"
Marko sounds like an utter madman to a classically trained singer, especially with how he does this song. I love the contrast with Tarja's voice! They are both so fabulous. Sidenote: I would love to see a version of this with Tarja as Christine and Floor as the Phantom. Edit: Good man! I do not do singer vs wars with any vocalists either! With Nightwish and the 3 ladies they've had singing for them, it's like comparing an apple, banana, and strawberry. It's pure nonsense!
I agree 100%. Marko has to sing really high to harmonize with Tarja, which is a soprano. That's not an easy feat. So always when I see that discussion "Tarja, Anette or Floor, who's the best?" I answer "Marko". He's more than just a bass player and backup vocalist, he's really good at what he does!
I actually think that different Nightwish tracks suit different singers. I assume Tuomas wrote for the singer he had at the time to some extent. Phantom is perfect the way Tarja and Marko did it (though I suspect Florr would do it great too), GLS and Storytime the way Floor does them are absolute perfection. I really love Annette's voice for Amaranth. That lovely, bouncy quality that scandinavian singers have fits it so well.
@@waragainstsleepx2517 Floor did a great version on Beste Zangers with Henk Poort (who PLAYED the Phantom). REALLY impressive. So hard to choose; Henk is a powerful baritone, but Marko SOUNDS like a villain... and, of course, Floor and Tarja are both … incredible.
@@johnrose5482 Hard to choose ?
I tell you a secret ! ;-)
You dont have to choose ! Listen to both !
:-)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Oddly, that IS my choice... I DO have preferences of course, but Phantom and Ever Dream are two of the "damn, BOTH ladies do SUCH a good job" songs...
All rise (for Tarja). If you know the history, you understand the significance.
Wow......Tarja is nailing it, what a great opera voice. And Marko is awesome
Mad respect for not falling into the bottomless pit that is Tarja vs Floor debate.
If you want to See Marco's clear vocal, please do Nightwish - The Islander (Live At Tampere)
Yes, or Kiss while your lips are still red, live at Wembley.
In my opinion, "High Hopes" was his best performance
My favorite era of Nightwish by far, and what a POWERFUL version of the Phantom of the Opera.
Love this arrangement. Marko kills it. Tarja's vocals are so good and that D6 she hits at the end is spot on
if you'd like to hear how Floor sings Phantom of the Opera. She does an amazing duet with Henk Poort, who is the Dutch Phantom.
They duet together on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers.
Yea, Henk has a pretty cool voice too.
@@GAIS414 Yep, he even goes metal for a moment....
Floor is absolutely amazing.
I know the clip... it's a very good performance too, with Henk singing with distortion for the first time.
Floor and Henk Poort where amazing in their duet, Henk Poort was the Phantom in the Dutch musical.
Totally agree, Doug"s overall respect to musicians.
Did you catch Marko at 3:45 making the “eye glass spectacle” as The Phantom. 👌🏻 He portrays this “crazed / demented phantom” perfectly!
No, we Nightwish fans don't ask that question. Each one of the three singers have their own style, and each is very good at what she does. We usually stay away from this specific question, and praise each and every one of them. Kudos for not answering that. :)
Not true at all. We Nightwish fans don't ask that question because we know that Anette Olzon was a mistake.
@@KrecikOwsik About NW we could call a lot of things "a mistake", so, we better not discuss that, in fact, in my opinion, Anette doesn't have the best voice, betwen the 3, but the worst albums were made with Floor, even that her voice is amazing, so, better not talk about it like our friend Thomas said above hahah
@@isab.c.6702 I disagree about worse albums but that's not what I'm talking about. Being good or bad singer is one thing. Being singer who just stops singing and goes off stage is terrible. For me and many more NW fans Anette could never be part of the band and nothing would change.
Question that is never asked among NW fans is for example - if Marco will be missed.
@@KrecikOwsik but I think NW fans where very bad to Anette, I feel bad for her, think she could be better if she had some support.
@@KrecikOwsik Please don't start the Tarja vs Anette flame wars again. 5 years of it was more than enough.
Interestingly, both Tarja and Marco were sick with the flu at this concert. Just shows what professionals can do when they have to!
Marko will be missed so much!!
Never get tired of this version. It´s awesome. Good to you, Doug, for discovering this gem.
One thing you should know about this performance, and why Tarja sounded a little out of breath at times and why she left the stage so quickly, was that she had a terrible case of the flu. Between just about every song she ran out to the dressing room to throw up, and still she managed to sing like that with such energy.
You looked up the pronunciation of Tarja's name! Nice touch
I kinda wish Tuomas would write a proper rock musical some day :)
?? we thought he had =P
Didn't he already do that..??!!
"Imaginareum" and "life and adventure of Scrooge"...?!
@@emmaofdragons2720 - that is precisely what i was thinking...
Another fantastic reaction, Doug! This is by far my favourite version or cover of POTO and yours is my favorite reaction. Once again, your vast professional knowledge is both educating and entertaining.
Also appreciate your comment and wisdom regarding comparing Floor and Tarja.
We all know who the best Nightwish singer is.... Marko! 😊❤️
Unfortunately was and hopefully will be again.
Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean sounds nice, but i never really tried listening to them much though.
Andrew Lloyd Weber said that this was his favorite version. As a side note, the keyboardist, Toumas Holopainen's favorite composer is Hans Zimmer.
Really? When did ALW say that?
@@davguev Very unlikely. ALW literally set up the original and subsequent productions.
@@davguev It's my understanding that he informed Nightwish of that.
Ah.... that explains the use of the main theme from King Arthur years ago at the end of their shows.
@@eddys.3524 You can definitely hear hints of Hans Zimmer in Tuomas' works.
LOL "no cell phones". Those were the days. Then again, if they had cell phones at that show, all their screens would probably have cracked when Tarja hit those high notes😁.
This my favourite version of Phantom. Tarja is absolutely incredible. I really think you are doing right thing staying out the vocalist preference. Annette never gets any love, but her style as a soloist doing her thing is better suited than Nightwish.
If you do another Nightwish track, Ever Dream is fantastic. I know you'll scoff at the progression already 🤣
#Annette_Olzon is flawless in the studio Storytime & Meadows of Heaven. She owns both imho. I don't think Floors variances help Storytime much. And she doesn't seem to sing Meadows.
I love what Anette is doing with The Dark Element. She has the perfect voice for that kind of metal.
It's nice to see a review of Tarja. I love Floor with her range/technique but I feel like Tarja is left out in reaction/analysis videos.
Agree, People often forget Tarja is still the longest running Nightwish singer, not only by years, but also by production (Tarja 5 albums vs Anette and Floor who have only 2 albums each) and Floor is only now catching up on her on years. I wish Tarja'd get a bit more love from the reactors apart from this one song
Nightwish is much more than just Floor (while she is amazing), it is a 25 year epic musical journey
Everyone forgets or doesn't want to react to Annette
@@HurtboxTV There aren't that many good quality live videos with her.
Only for the lack of HQ/HD live videos, as the Helsinki show is not nearly as nicely done as Wacken, Wembley, Tampere, or Buenos Aires...
That's really a reason of technology/time. There are simply more (and better) live recordings with Floor because she's recorded much later. It's way easier and cheaper to record a live concert now than it was 15 years ago, and it's also way more common to find these recordings released on the internet.
I saw them earlier on that tour, Tarja's voice really caressed your heart, especially during the more emotional pieces.
THE most important part of all this is that, they are bringing young people into the classics. Cultivating ears towards more.
LOVE THIS 🤘😁🤘
Ayy, it's the man, the myth, the legend himself!
It's the modern day Red Beard the Pirate!
so this I why you revisited it haha fuck ya \m/
Haven't expected to see ya here 😄Love your content.
I would like to suggest one more performance with Tarja. Please react to "The siren", a live performance recorded on the DVD "End of an era". Thank you so much for also giving Tarja space on your channel!
Do Clansman from Iron Maiden, Rock in Rio
Amen, what you said about the singers is straight up right on. They are both fantastic singers and each brings a different and unique tone and take on each song they perform.
The World needs „ The Day That The World Breaks Down by Ayreon“ in these times.

Tarja is an angel from heaven.
I am huge Nightwish fan and this was my introduction to the band. I really like Marco's take on the Phantom. It's they way it should be. The Phantom is a deranged madman, a homicidal maniac. Give it that color is perfect.
Same. Someone linked the video for this song for me a few years back. I really liked it and looked for other Nightwish stuff. Then I discovered Sleeping Sun, then Ghost Love Score, then Shoemaker, then Gethsemane, then... well, you get the idea! Nightwish has been my favourite band ever since!
Beauty and the beast mood.
Bravo for not comparing the singers! They are both fantastic in their own right, after that it's just personal taste
Plus they are actually very good friends
All three singers are awesome.
Now this is more like it.
Classical composer and its taken him this long to get to the real heart and soul of nightiwsh
Finally he got to it
Hey, you should definitely check out nightwish Pink Floyd high hopes cover same show, awesome thanks 😎
I 2nd that! Spoiler alert: NW kills it!
@@brewswillis9783 I will 3rd that cos its fabulous.
4thed!
there's nothing special about that one. and "Pink Floyd cover" is kind of an oxymoron to begin with, the originals are just too fricking great. better do your own thing then.
From a Nightwish fan from when she was 13 (like.. 20 years ago..): Later in the years I learned of a band called After Forever where the leadsinger was Floor Jansen. I always thought, if I could have the perfect band, it would be Nightwish, which Floor Jansen. Now I have that. But the first 3 albums with Tarja. Golden. Love them for ever as they are. Tarja Turunen is the only one who could entice me away with Sleepwalker (as a teenager, my first _ever_ metal song and Nightiwish-song. And it as great.). Also, totally understand the "not going near the discussion", as.. I wouldn't either. They both have their strengths. For me, with this one comment, I'm trying to bring notice to Tarja Turunen as the lead singer for Sleepwalker...
And I say this with a smile on my face.....COWARD...Tarja is amazing...
Probably already written, but it was performed at the very last show with Tarja. She was the only member who didn't know she was fired this night. Strange to see knowing it.
About another performance with Tarja and Nightwish, their most iconic song with her is Wishmaster, even if they already release Ghost love score. You will not find it complex, but it will stick in your brain. It is Tarja song and she still sing it without the band.
The comments you made about comparing singers is spot on. They are both amazing and should not be compared.
Well done, Doug. Appreciate bringing both theory and emotion into your analysis!
Same concert... Slaying the dreamer
i love how you passed over the lyrics, as soon as you heard them performing at top level, you didnt mind, they HAD to hit the notes, and put style and performance, but you were deeep in the little things as the cellphones in the audience or if they stayed or departed from the original source.
i KNOW the internet would be intereseted in any other genre, metal and non metal, being reacted on surface level with your style, from how radio hits are just the same progression, bpm, and chorus verse-chorus etc, to the ''weird'' syles all over the music spectrum, from an actual old piece, to k-pop.
im so thrilled, this is growing steady, be thinking about some t-shirts chief!
Thanks for not entering the discussion. I think it's being long enough. We who we were fans of Nightwish with Tarja were thrilled when Floor stepped in because most of us we knew her from After Forever, and therefore we know they are both real Queens at singing. The best way to be thankful to the great gift they give us with their performances is to respect them and stop the eternal fight. So they might actually give us a duet someday with Nightwish!!!
"I've heard this song hundreds of times but not from this band"
Mate, you're in for a treat.
Another fantastic Tarja's performance is "Supremacy" from Woodstock 2016
Yesss or Act II that's amazing !!
I also love that you can tell they are having so much fun up on stage.
you gave your opinion as a true musician and closed the discussion for me thank you! Cheers 🍻
Such a great answer for Tarja vs Floor debate.
I completely agree on this position.
Even if I personally would like to hear "old stuff" the way it was performed by Tarja, I would never even dare to state that one of them does her part better.
Another awesome cover from Nightwish is High Hopes
Wise man! Music is not a competition and where it is, the awards they give have very little to do with talent.
Thank you for your mature stance. I appreciate you not taking the bait from any fans . I see people below denying that fans ask that question, but it doesn’t take long to search comments from the past and see that. Anyway, like you said both singers bring their experiences, TRAINING ., and styles and they should each be respected.
Yess I'm so happy you reacted to this! And even more thank you for your words about vocalists bringing their own humanity and instrument to their performances. 🤘🤘
Thank you for this! I really love this cover by them, and since it's one of the few covers we have (High Hopes being another one) to enjoy from them.
I'm glad you can enjoy the singers individually for who they are, and I think that's the right way to go as well. That way we can have you react to them all!
Smart man avoiding the Tarja/Floor discussion. I completely agree, they're both incredible.
The best duet!! I love them!!! Tarja ♥️
Greetings from Finland and thanks for your reaction 😀🙃😀😷🤘🤟👌❤
So smart to abstain from comparing these fantastic women. Your reasoning is so accurate too.
Thank you very much for this video.
It's very interesting to have your opinion of this metal cover from this piece.
I also have to thank you for the quality of your video.
I'm not native english speaker and your prononciation is very clear to me.
I'm really happy for having discovered your channel!
Yesss, yay, more Nightwish! Awesome video :))
Magic Doug, I like it when you frown your nose. Never disgusted but truly amazed. Nightwish deserve that. I love Marko.
wow, now I truly respect this man.
I love Nigtwish, and I won't mince any words. In my opinion Tarja has the most beautiful voice out of the three female singers. Floor is great, but I think Tarja is a cleaner singer. Anntte Olzon is also a great singer. She was also one of the lead singers. Not sure if you listened to these NW songs, but here you go just in case:
The Poet and the Pendilum
Ghost Love Score
Story TIme
The Greatest Show On Earth
Super glad you enjoyed this. Very cool to see your reaction. Thank you!
First, have some happy news to make sure you are aware of -- Floor and Tarja are great friends, speak often, and as recently as December 9, 2020, Tarja hosted an Instagram "livestream" where she interviewed Floor (see "Instagram Live With Floor Jansen", at ua-cam.com/video/rdF1AdCOxBA/v-deo.html). Always great to know the two singers themselves get along well (and no doubt share some "singing tips" in the process)!
Tarja's best video, I feel, is "Until My Last Breath", available at ua-cam.com/video/G-i4wUTtkZc/v-deo.html, currently with about 11 million views. Beautifully staged and shot, the composition is one of her best -- in recent live shows she was using it as the climax to her performance.
Finally, yes I agree with all of the other commenters that you absolutely MUST watch Floor and Henk's "Phantom of the Opera" at ua-cam.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/v-deo.html. The Beste Zangers series has an advantage over the recordings of many live concert performances, as it was filmed in a TV studio specifically equipped to highlight the vocal mix.
Keep well ...
Tarja and Marko was amazing ❤️
Tarja's voice = tears.
Thanks for the reaction and thanks for the encouragement to compare these two great female singers. As you say, everyone has their own and only their own voice and uses it. Dot.
Marko (the guy) came from the band Tarot (as the bassist and lead vocalist), who are a VERY prominent hard rock/metal band in Finland.
Please do Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera - this isn't by the way, anything to do with the Lloyd Webber tune....
Love these reaction vids by the way - really interesting, cheers.
I agree 🤘🏽🤘🏽
he has done it by now
Great job with the videos Doug!
Keep up the good work and Kudos to you!
I love tarja and floor, I think minor comparisons, like little differences, discussions about it are great, when no putting down is involved. But I love Marco, he’s the man, to keep up with their awesome singers and play.
love your analysis , you win a new nightwish fan subscriber ... keep going
a brilliant performance. tremendous style.
This is still my favourite rendition of Phantom of the Opera ever. And I also feel like this was the time Marco was at his absolute height. His voice was just so powerful and had such a large range during his performance. This exact recording was what made me fall in love with Nightwish, and made Marco my singing idol. Even though Marco is still awesome as both a bassist and singer, I did notice that he's starting to lose a little bit of what he managed to bring to the table during this performance.
To put it simply, he was at the top of his game and almost literally sang his heart out during this concert.
Another one from End of an Era, Ever dream !
Thank you!😊 I do not need to say anything about this song than that is still great!!!! Greetings from Finland (by NW fan since 1998)
Dude, you are awesome. Love hearing a composer's analysis. I generally assess reaction vids on this performance. Partially because I never get tired of watching it, and also because I know it so well. I like your beard, too. 😀
Doug may not be willing to compare the singers, but I will.
Studio: Anette
Live: Floor
Muse: Tarja
All of them are awesome and comparisons aren't automatically an either or.
gotta do so Yngwie when he did stuff with an orchestra backing him!!! Love your stuff Doug!
I love your thoughts on the Floor V Tarja discussion. :)
I guess Doug already told that he wants to stay away from that discussion for good reasons. And I fully agree with Doug on that. Both ladies are phenomenal singers ... full stop.
The answer is clearly "Marco".
Just say Elize and walk away.
Doug, I think Marco said "Alright!!!" at the end of the song. It's really cool that you are into Nightwish. I discovered them about 13 or so years ago after hearing another band (Van Canto) covering Wishmaster. You should do a video for Nightwish's Wishmaster and you should check out Van Canto if you get a chance. They use only drums and their voices for instruments. Best description would be acapella metal!!!
Marco's got PIPES brother! He can straight SANG.
Nemo is a Tarja classic
The last thing Marco said on the song was "Well all-right!" to her hitting the note he was trying to get out of her.
Tarja had flu that day ,for me she is favorite one 👏 , nice to see someone with looot expiriance to react 👌
Finally reacting to Tarja's voice
Tarja was big reason I fell in love with Nightwish instantly when I first heard them in 2000! This blend of metal, symphony and operatic voice was revolutionary! It was devastating when this magical combo came to such an end but thankfully Floor resurrected Nightwish vocally. Although I even like Anette's album vocals, she just couldn't do it live, especially Tarja's stuff. But yeah between Tarja and Floor there is no debate for me, both are equally amazing in their own way, I wish we could have them both in Nightwish 😁
If you want more Tarja, I highly recommend checking out some recordings from her solo career, particularly the live recording of "Undertaker".
Also, you should check out "Bismarck" by Sabaton-Floor is married to their drummer.
