Brilliant, thanks for this😊….I’d heard about the visitor toll pass on twitter & was planning on using one for our forthcoming trip. Great to see how easy it is in practice so if I needed any confirmation that this was the way to go you’ve certainly just supplied it 😊
Glad it helped. It is super easy. I was a bit worried about how long it took for the payment to complete, but they say 21 days and sure enough, on day 22 it was back on the card all correct. A lot of the tolls are becoming cash free, so there is no way to pay if you don’t have a pass like this, so it’s definitely a good idea!
@@PennieK thank you, it’s certainly reassuring to hear that it’s simple & works as they say. On our last trip in 2019 we hit a toll road on the way back from Big Cat Rescue in Tampa that had no booth & ended up getting stung when the bill arrived from Alamo so we’ll definitely be signing up to this on our next trip 😊
It took me exactly 21 days to get the final email and basically my trip was less then the $10 that they charge you up front for the pass, so I got a $3 credit back to my credit card. Like she said the account you set up when you first use the pass will expire, so if you ever come back to Orlando, you basically set up a new account and with me I just used the same password as before. One thing tho was as soon as I got my rental, I immediately went in the app and put the license plate number in the app, so it knows before I get scanned by a camera. I didn’t wanna trust for it to do automatically.
Fantastic video. I wish I'd known about this before going 1st-14th May this year. I've been going to Florida for 25 years and never heard of this, so obviously only came out within past two years. We normally just pay cash at the booth, but we went on a road to pay cash, the toll booth was born cked up, there was no way out once you were on it, and there was an overhead sign TOLL BY PLATE, so am awaiting a $25-50 charge probably! Ggggrrrrr. We spent the rest of the holiday avoiding toll roads totally via our TOMTOM, but it did add on some time to our journeys occasionally. Thanx for sharing.
Glad it will help in the future. I read about how they’re introducing a lot of unmanned toll booths. If you drive through in a hire car not only do you get the toll fine, but a lot of hire companies fine you for getting a fine. This was such an easy way to do and although I never really minded stopping at the tolls, it is noticeably quicker to just keep driving.
Great video, I had heard of the Toll Pass System for tourists renting cars but never knew which pass to use or how to get it. Thanks for the info. Already downloaded the app so I don't forget.
Hi, thanks for this informative video , quick question , can I remove the ticket from the rear view mirror once we have left the hire car area at the airport. Thanks
Hi Pennie, thanks for the vid - really helpful. We are in Orlando right now and using VTP. Slightly concerned as I went through 2 tolls from MCO to lake buena vista over a week ago and there’s nothing on my activity. Reason I’m concerned is the rear view has a bulky camera part of the windscreen and worried it was blocked. Could you see the activity as you passed through and whilst in your rental? Or was all the activity posted at the end? Thank you
They say it can take 21 days to update in the app which is why they don’t refund your deposit credit until then. I honestly can’t remember what showed when as most recently I’ve only taken toll roads to and from the airport
I wish I'd known this b4 my last trip to Orlando...so annoying, didn't plan on traveling on any toll roads, but on the way to airport had to stop at 4 different tolls- ran out of change (cuz the only took coins) and ran through the last toll- got a bill of $25....for the 1 toll....ugghh! Next time will just pay for a toll system like this.
Hi, thanks very much for your video, it was very informative! When collecting your pass at the airport, do you need Wi-Fi or data to generate your QR code for the vending machine? Thanks, Ian
It I’m honest I can’t remember. I turn off roaming when I go away, so it definitely wouldn’t have been on my data. But I also have no idea if my phone connected automatically to the Wi-Fi because I go so often… but if it was via Wi-Fi you should be fine to do it without data.
Excellent Video! Question; Toll plaza have a lanes for sun pass, EZ pass and other. Which lane can you go trough with this pass? can it be used from orlando to tampa? at any toll, even if it is one of the small ones? Thanks in advance
You don’t need to go through the toll plaza. Keep to the left (centre) and keep driving. You only need to stop at the toll plaza to pay or top up a pass. The visitor toll pass doesn’t need to stop. Just keep driving! A full list of the toll companies you can use it for is on their website. From Orlando to Tampa you’d usually take I4 which isn’t a toll road. I can’t remember any tolls but it’s been almost 10 years since I last drove to Tampa.
Sorry question for you re VTP. Ive set up an account and given details of when im travelling and end of holiday. I can't seem to login correctly, im not travelling for a few weeks though. What seems to be the problem 🤷♂️? Am i better of setting up the account again when i get there or before i travel! Amd can i screenshot the QR code. Thanks
We are renting through Alamo ( did you use this company)? I like Sydney Marshall said, were you double charged after use of the tolls. Many thanks and please confirm.
Yes I used Alamo. Double charging will happen for one of two reasons a) you opt in to Alamo’s pass option as well as getting a visitor toll pass b) you don’t have any pass or payment and you drive through the toll without paying. So as long as you don’t opt to add alamos toll pass to your booking and you hang the pass in the car before you leave the airport, you shouldn’t be double charged. I’m still waiting for the credit to be refunded to me, so at the moment I’ve still paid $10, but they said it would happen after 21 days which is tomorrow. I’ve had nothing from Alamo, and the one time I did get a toll fine from them (which was an error as I had paid and the toll just didn’t register so the fine was cancelled) it was charged to my card within a week, so I am assuming this means the pass worked fine.
So your pass is linked to your rental vehicle automatically when you leave the garage or do you have to take it to the car rental desk to get your pass registered to your vehicle?
You hang the pass from the mirror before you leave the hire car area. As you drive out there’s a sensor that reads the pass and the number plate and links them. They did advise me to check the app once I got to the hotel. If it doesn’t link you can manually add the number plate to the pass. (I think they said within 21 days and it will reconcile your toll charges retrospectively. It’s handy for me because I do “beat the line” with Alamo. I leave the airport, walk to the Alamo section and take a car without stopping or talking to anyone from Alamo. They only person you see is at the barrier when they scan the car and take your card for security deposit.
@@PennieK Thanks PK! I knew nothing about the almost total switch over to automatic toll charges and it was starting to give me a headache! App now installed and good to go. Great videos by the way 🙂
Returned just over a week ago. The visitor toll pass is a dream and very easy to keep track of your costs. If only the car rental desks were as dreamy, well over an hour at Dollar 😬.
I always hire a car. I always get a package and in total for the flights, hotel, car hire and added CDW insurance I’d say the holiday was maybe £2-300 more than I’d usually pay for 9 days. (It was about £1500 for the 9 day package)
Just a question: How do you check that the registration number has linked with the pass? I'll be renting with Alamo, which has a toll-by-plate system and it would be troublesome if I get double billed.
You can either add the plate to the app before you leave the airport, but I don’t have roaming on my phone, so the lady said it was fine and just to check it later. All you do is open the app - I did it when I got to the hotel - and it shows you the plate number in the app. I asked Alamo when I left the garage if they needed to do anything to stop me getting charged by them, but unless you have paid the extra to add their toll pass onto your booking, it won’t charge you. The only time you would get charged is if the toll pass didn’t work so the toll company will send a fine to the car hire company because that is the registered owner of the vehicle - they then pass on the fine to you.

Yes all you need is an internet connection to set up a reservation. Once your done setting it all up you will be given a QR code

Thank you so much for this. Question, would this still work if I was to travel across different states, example from Florida to Georgia? Thanks
No idea I went from the airport to Disney and back
Great explanation. Which lanes do you use at the tolls? I haven't been back for 9 years. Is it the Sunpass lane?
The ones that don’t have a toll both. You just keep going straight on the freeway. It works for all toll companies in Florida.
