  • I’m continuing the serial of video recordings with concerts, interviews and talks of Khansahib from different sources . Like with the other recordings I’m trying to offer the most complete and technical optimal version of it. Besides providing some background information and comments.
This recording of Raga Desh is the second half of a Rudra Veena concert organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR ) on 2nd August 1989 in the FICCI Auditorium Delhi. While for the the first half Khansahib choose appropriate to the season the monsoon Raga Miyan ki Malhar, which will be uploaded at the suitable time this year, he rounded of the concert with this sweet version of Desh. Belonging to the Khamaj Thaat it was one of his favorite ‘deserts’ that he would play after a rather serious Raga, like Khamaj itself too.
I personally felt always a bit of an emotional distance to both of these Ragas, regardless of the strong sentiments that Desh awakes in the Indian heart and soul, as expressed in numerous patriotic songs including the national anthem ‘Vande Mataram’. However what is the Raga becomes almost a secondary question when it is played by Ustadji on the Been.
Also in this concert he is accompanied on Pakhawaj by Pandit Gopal Das Panse one of the finest Pakhawaj maestros who used to play already with Ustad Sadiq Ali Khan before becoming Khansahibs permanent accompanist for many decades.

Even the masters have trouble getting the veena perfectly tuned!

like all string instruments that are made from organic materials, the Veena reacts quite sensible to weather, climate and even change of vibration and mood in a room. Its quite natural that its tuning is getting instable while being transported to the venue, into the green room and finally into the hall. Under this circumstances it needs quite a lot of experience and mastership to get a stable tuning on stage.

Do You have a tip for buying a rudra veena at a good price ?
I have container with a store in Berlin that might order one from India.
I am in Sweden, do You know anyone here or maybe other tips ?
It has to be below 1500 euros .

Sorry Anders, not tips or tricks. With the very few players and accordingly few instrument makers who try themself on the Rudra Veena there is no real market for it. For 1500 EUR you might get some standard instrument directly ordered in India. However the finishing and playability will be most likely very mediocre.
Quality instruments are rare and much higher priced.

The resonance/ sound will not be that good You say ?
I will probably still buy one if I can .
The firm in Berlin may get one with an order 6 months in advance .
They said there might be a delar due to The c19 situation in India .
Maybe one day I can afford a more exclusive one .
The design doesnt matter to me, that may be what You refer to as finish (?) .

Ordering an instrument like this is basically a lottery game. Even the people from India Instruments will have not much influence on what they get delivered since this will a special request order.
Sound is influenced by many factors and for you as a beginner it will be difficult to make out what are possible problems and what could be improved. With finishing I mean not only the design, but the whole care that has gone into manufacturing the instrument.
Of course you can spend this money getting a first taste of the instrument. If you want seriously play it you will certainly need a better instrument at some point of time.
