    Stephan was right (sort of)! printer paper is made by cutting 17x22" sheets of paper into quarters; the weight is rated by how much a ream of the basis paper weighed. If you buy printer paper rated as 20lb, that means four reams (the equivalent of one basis ream) will add up to twenty

      Felt is rated the same way. This weird stuff is based on historic principles not known to young people as history was eliminated out of our basic curriculum about half a century ago. Paper size today is based on the quarto system based on rag paper history, hence the the 17x22" standard sheet for office paper manufacture (8.5x11").

    "We love failures because failures bring understanding of what's wrong [and] with that bring solutions." Yes, yes, yes. Great attitude. Take risks. It's only when we take ourselves too seriously that we're afraid to make mistakes that other people can see. When we get past thinking we're better than other people, we become relatable, and we're able to relax and just live. Yes, "This is one of the beautiful things."

    When in elementary school, I was caught flying a paper airplane and my punishment was to make 500 paper airplanes to fly from the balcony of the auditorium; ultimately to search through the seats for. I showed up with paper sacks full of planes made from sheets of newspaper. They flew all the way to the stage where they could be easily retrieved, but I only got to fly about ten of them before the vice-principal realized his mistake.

    Suggestion: have a contest when you get a crowd of spectators, involving catching paper planes dropped from the big one. (Maybe just for kids?) Write the prizes on the planes, (or run the paper thru printer to make a flyer - pun!) They have to catch it in the air for it to count. Put up several drones or other cameras in the drop area so you can confirm they caught it. Maybe experiment with some of the other sorts of paper airplanes to find one that flies well from just being dropped, versus thrown. That stubby paper airplane that flies in circles might work well. It might stay the air longer at grabable height, but will be turning too, so could be challenging.

    Paper is weighed by measuring how much a 500 sheet stack of 17" x 22" would be in a particular thickness. Yours paper was noted to be 20 pound and its weight measured at 5 pounds on the scale. 5 is one quarter of 20. Note that 8.5 x 11 is one quarter of 17 x 22 too.

    • @ParagonB
      @ParagonB 4 роки тому +2

      yep. to further clarify, Most paper comes from what is called a "parent sheet" which is the size that is produced at a paper mill. So 20 pound bond is designated by what 500 sheets of the parent size weighs.

      Jeffrey Leckemby so 8.5x11 is one quarter of 17x22, huh? Not sure how that can be since one quarter = 1/4th, which would mean 4 times 8,5 would be 17. 4 times 8.5 is not 17. 4 times 11 is also not 22.

    • @snikwahjets
      @snikwahjets 4 роки тому

      Raycefan its 4 times the area not the length that counts.
      Doubling both sides gives you 4 times the area.

    • @ParagonB
      @ParagonB 4 роки тому

      @@Raycefan incorrect. To get four sheets of 8.5 by 11, you would cut the 22 in half, making two 17x11 sheets. Now, if you cut the 17 in half, you have your four 8.5x11 sheets. Just to confuse even further, most parent sheets are 23x35. So you actually get eight 8.5x11 sheets (there is extra that is trimmed away, or for printing, can be used to "bleed" an image off of a finished page)

    I have a suggestion if you want to rebuild it: Try attaching some of the smaller paper airplanes to the larger one via fishing line/nylon or whatever, and then they will fall out and sort of follow the mothership, like a fleet or squadron.
    -So you would have the mothership in front, with 3-4 smaller ones behind, and 3-4 normal ones coming out of each of those. It may not be possible, but if it is then that would be really cool to see.

    @vitor900000 4 роки тому +1

    You guys probably already know this but this paper plane was design to go far at a high speed due to it being very light like all high speeds jet planes do.
    Its not flying well because its not going fast enough to generate enough lift to be stable due to its small wing size/span.
    There are overall three important things for a plane to go far and fast. Drag, Lift and wing size/spam.
    The less Drag you have the fast you can go.
    The Fast you go more Lift you will generate with a given wing size/span.
    If you have a lot of lift to spare you can reduce the wing size/span and that will reduce the surface area reducing Drag.
    This is a endless cycle. What puts a end to this is cargo size and weight.
    The bigger the cargo the bigger the plane will be because the cargo need to fit inside the plane and the bigger the plane the greater is its Drag.
    And more weight will need more lift to take the plane out of the ground limiting how small your wing can be.
    Another ting that is a limiting factor is runway. If you have very small wings you will only generate lift to take off at very high speeds and you only have a limited space to accelerate.
    If you cant accelerate in the given space you will need a more powerful engine and a more powerful engine is usually heavier.
    More weight will need even more acceleration and it will require a even more powerful engine and the cycle goes on.
    Another way around the problem is variable-sweep wings but it also adds more weight (may or may not be as much as a more powerful engine) and introduces its own share of problems like complexity, weak points/material fatigue and others.
    When you balance all of those things you will have the most efficient plane for its intended purpose.

    I LOVE THIS!!! All of you make a wonderfull team. Great fun!!
    I suggest a challenge for you all. Recreate a dambuster raid, with a dam, with speed and height to scale, with views from the plane for the bombardier.
    I realise this would mean a LOT of, working together, therefore I think YOU can do it.
    Thank you VERY, much, for your fun vids. Greetings from The Netherlands.

    6:58 It is not called "Auto-level" It's actually due to "center of mass of plane " which the average most weight
    on plane which is concentrated at a particular point or part.

    • @aidanzigler7454
      @aidanzigler7454 4 роки тому

      He said it acts as auto-level. And all you did was define center of mass, not how where it is causes the plane to level out.

      Lights Camera and Lego they would have to make the planes out of paper and maybe balsa wood or something light for a structure, so that the air soft will actually do damage. But the problem is an air soft would be really heavy relative to the plane.

    I have a cool video idea - one person makes the tail for a plane, one person makes the fuselage and one person makes the wing without seeing each other's design. Then you join the 3 together and see if it flies

    Inside usually, but I almost never bother with the standard dart.
    I have a custom design I like called a Victory, super heavy nose, large low aspect ratio delta wings, and a tail and large down turned winglets. It also uses adjustable control surfaces, cause it flies like a rock left to its own devices. But you get it properly trimmed, and you’ve got an incredibly fast aircraft, and the faster it flies the better.
    A Victory would actually work fairly well here because it would drop like a brick and gain a ton of speed before rocketing off into the sunset.
