    My question with these kinds of structures, in the time of year when everything is green and growing, is this: Aren’t there bugs crawling around inside?
    I don’t have a problem with insects and spiders in the woods in spring and summer when I am AWAKE, but I am quite squeamish about the idea of SLEEPING where there are likely to be all kinds of such creatures crawling around where I am sleeping.
    How do you deal with that issue or do you just ignore it and don’t worry about bugs crawling on you while you sleep?

    • @TheBearEssentials
      @TheBearEssentials  11 місяців тому +7

      Such a good question, honestly I hate the thought of it too. But for some reason I havent actually encountered the problem.. The only bug that's really bothered me during these are mosquitos which go away once the sun sets in most cases. I cant explain it really but I've never had any creepy crawlies bothering me at night. No idea why. But im not complaining haha. Maybe im just too exhausted to notice?

    • @ChrisFar
      @ChrisFar 11 місяців тому +2

      I've seen the edges of some of those spades with a sharpened edge that could be used for some cutting purposes. That being said, I think in most environments, the ability to effectively cut and process timber with an axe is far more valuable than having the ability to effectively dig. I would still choose an axe if presented with the choice between the two. Hbu?

    • @TheBearEssentials
      @TheBearEssentials  11 місяців тому +1

      Hmm good question T.
      I think I’d agree with Chris^
      The sharpened spade can hack at trees, but nothing beats the saw n axe combo.
      Digging with a shovel was a lot of energy spent, but could also be a makeshift axe and the ability to handle hot coals/rocks.. but I think I’d consider it a nice to have over a need to have.

    You really don't see many of these videos where they're not digging in pure sand. Where I live there is a lot of Rock, a lot of roots, and severe lack of straight trees. The ones that are are giant hardwoods. Luckily I have a lot of dead ash for my build. Unfortunately I have never seen a cabin built from hard wood. I don't even know if it's recommended

      100%. This was in the middle of a maple forest. Only spot that had a bit of a lack of trees, hundreds of rocks from here. Then the clay. But no one wants to watch hours of me chipping at things and no progress lol. So I cut a lot and fast forward some. It was a rough dig..

    I like a dugout shelter. I just wonder how you keep the rain from flooding it.

    • @TheBearEssentials
      @TheBearEssentials  11 місяців тому

      Good question! I havent yet used it in the rain. It's built on fairly even ground and the base is almost entirely clay, so In theory it wont flood in.. I'll test it out in a downpour and report back if I had to swim out or not lol

    What i would give to own a decent chunk of land where i could do something like this.
    I have a knack for making just about any space cozy and homey, the problem is i can't ever get such a space!
    If i could just wander out into the woods and do this without being arrested i would be so happy with life.

    I watch a lot of these videos and I'm curious as to how long these mud and "clay" mixtures actually hold up more than a couple storms and of course drying out.

    Great video, great shelter. Thanks for sharing.
    Why dig out inside? What purpose does it provide, especially for the maximum effort required in the digging?
    Thanks.

    Looks great but that roof must leak like crazy. No shingle overlap.

      @TheBearEssentials  9 місяців тому

      Definitely could have been improved.
      It doesn’t leak like crazy. But does leak somewhat.

      @@TheBearEssentials just to share some info..proper wood shingles are 3 x the exposure. So a 5" exposure should be a 15" shingle. Enjoy your days!😊

    Hey DJ! I watched three of your videos this morning. Loved 'em all! I found a reel of how to make an Alpine Butterfly Knot...I wanna learn how to do the others as well.
    I really love that your videos aren't hours long...perfect timing. Thank you for telling us how long it took to build.
    Loved the 'roots' you used in the bear den...clever! I love your survival skills, ingenuity and hard work!
    Where can I get your knife? It's obviously well made and full tang to be able to use it like you do. I've only seen one knife that was strong enough to use like that.
    When can I get on your list for a bucksaw? I need to have an 'odd' number...just 'sayin!
    I'm your neighbor in northern Maine...howdy neighbor!!!
    Thanks for showing us your well earned meals...ummm!!!
    I was mesmerized by your ways...thank you😊

      Hi Julia!
      First off, thank you for the kind words, I’m stoked you’ve found me and are likening the channel.
      And funny thing about the knife, it’s actually extremely inexpensive and not full tang! Surprising, right? I honestly love it and always try to push it to the limits and haven’t hit one yet. It’s called the Mora Companion and is the best $20 knife you can get.
      As for the Bucksaw, the wait list has been closed for the past half a year.. I launched the list and it hit 1000 waiting, so it was really unfair to have people on there for two years or so I think.
      That being said… I’ll be opening it back up in the new year. Between videos I’ve been working hard on making saws as well as a few new camping inventions coming out soon :)
      If you’ve got this far in reading this, even though the waitlist is “closed”, you can still technically join it from my website .. hint hint 😉

    How do you deal with ant trails crossing/creeping into your shelter? Do you have any tips as how to avoid or eliminate them? Thank you very much.

    Hello.
    I think that we should use dry grass in the clay mix rather than green.
    I think we call it”cobb” in the U.K.
    It can be used to build a whole residence, but it’s best used in conjunction with stone or timber.
    Look up wattle and daub!
    It’s great for sealing stone chimneys such as yours
    Thank you for your video.

      Awesome tip, you’re absolutely right - the dried fibres would be significantly better. The way I have done it is a quick and dirty but less effective way

    thats a really cool way to build a shelter but I am curious how well it will hold up in the rain, would love to see this shelter in the rain, you have my subscription and a like. and please dont hate me but I feel like a slightly steape angle on the roof and a bunch of horizontal branches with a bunch of leaves and moss piled on top may give you a more or equaly watertight shelter for much less effort. but I love to be proven wrong and learn somthing new so please tell me if im an idiot. still its a great video
