    35:00 “Mission Command” is still used today in militaries. Rather than an autocratic leadership style, it is where a Commander gives his intent to his subordinates and how they achieve that intent is upto them. It’s particularly useful when the Commander is inexperienced and the subordinates are subject matter experts who can use their own experience and knowledge to determine the best course of action (for example, a new junior Officer with old SNCOs).

    The ominous "background" music is so loud that the narration is very difficult to hear and/or understand. This is a common audio problem. I think sometimes the music people think their part is more important than understanding the spoken word.
    I know that combat is noisy and confusing; but we are not actually in combat here. We are attempting to understand what happened.

      Not a chance.
      1. Losing the Battle of Britain would have meant that the RAF lost the battle for air superiority over the Channel. Their fighter squadrons would have to withdraw from southeast England to bases outside the effective range of the German Me-109. However, the RAF would still retain the ability to achieve local aerial superiority in the Channel area. The Luftwaffe by comparison would have won the Battle of Britain only at significant cost to themselves.
      2. The Luftwaffe had a very limited number of aircrews experienced in attacking warships at sea- roughly the equivalent of 3-4 bomber groups.
      3. The British still have the Royal Navy. The Home Fleet alone is vastly superior to the entire Kriegsmarine. Additionally, the RN has approximately 30 destroyers based in southern England- and these alone can wreak havoc with the invasion fleet.
      4. The German invasion fleet was an ad hoc collection of both powered and unpowered vessels- the latter of which had to be towed across the Channel. The resulting speed of advance of this fleet was so slow (approximately 6 knots max) that when the tide shifted against the fleet, it would be pushed backwards toward the continent. The fleet's crossing of the channel would have taken literally days to accomplish- during which time the Royal Navy and a maximum effort by the RAF would have torn the German invasion craft apart (although undoubtedly at great cost to themselves).
      5. While it can be said that the British could hardly afford to lose a significant portion of the RN and RAF, it can also be said that the Germans could hardly afford to lose the men and equipment of the invasion force. Just as importantly, the barges of the German invasion force had been assembled from inland river traffic in Germany, France, and the Low countries, and the loss of their transport ability would have severely impacted the German economy.
      The upshot here is that establishing German aerial superiority 'over' the English Channel would not have automatically conferred control of the Channel itself to the Germans. This meant that a German victory in the Battle of Britain would not have materially improved the chance of success in a German invasion of southern England.
      To greatly increase their chances of success in an invasion, the Germans would have needed to effectively destroy the RAF at minimal cost to the Luftwaffe- so as to establish not simply aerial superiority, but aerial supremacy over the Channel and southern England, and still have the strength to neutralize the Royal Navy. In 1940, the Germans lacked the ability to accomplish this.

    • @psilvakimo
      @psilvakimo 3 роки тому +1

      Probably not much. The Germans would have to run the great gauntlet of the Royal navy. They didn't have the navy to counter it.
