Rheinhard Gehlen in German intelligence said they grossly underestimated Soviet strength planning Barbarossa. They destroyed more than what they thought the Soviets had. Yet the Soviets kept coming with more. His book "The Service" is an interesting read.
German logisticians predicted pretty much exactly what happened in Barbarossa. But the narrative we heard after the war was from defeated Generals still in cya mode. Their traditional narrative of primitive “asiatic hordes” met with a good reception among western allies at the beginning of the Cold War. The subtext was that the Soviets only had brute force of numbers on their side, which was a genuine threat but could be countered through western alliances. It was at best a half truth, but it was politically convenient for western allies to accept the narrative of the recently defeated German generals (in fact, you see the same narrative, in even more cartoonish form, in the memoirs of average German soldiers).
@F. Friedrich Kling Hauss You have to admit, 19-to-1 is one of the more outlandishly high casualty estimates out there. The fact that we are hearing it from the US Army also fits in with what I am saying... the US STILL sees Russia as a near-peer adversary and looks to disparage the nation at every opportunity. It’s still common for peace advocates in the US to be called Russian agents, particularly when opposing US actions against Syria and Venezuela, which are Russian allies. Putin of course plays the same games with historical interpretation.
@F. Friedrich Kling Hauss You’re getting a very one-sided view if you think the Germans were always outnumbered. The axis wasn’t outnumbered on the eastern front until after Kursk (the UA-cam channel “TIK” has some good videos on the subject). And Hitler’s Wehrmacht was totally outmatched by the WWI German army... there’s absolutely no question about that.

At 14 minutes the video starts discussing the nature of the 5cm short barrel gun on the Mk III panzer. Only problem is they picture the short barrelled 7.5 cm gun which was designed to be a support weapon providing a modicum of mobile artillery. It fired HE and HEAT rounds which at a shorter range was very effective on most tanks. Shame their research for this show does not include technical accuracy.
This guy's crews must have been the most unlucky soldiers ever. At some point you know nobody wanted to be placed in his tank.
This man who had been trained in tank warfare payed off. He survived the war years.
The graveyard battle - now that's a fight!
This guy is the most unluckiest lucky dude you ever even heard of.
A fight for survival says it all.
Bauer is exactly the kind of soldier that veterans from all sides respect.
Mr Ludwig Bauer seems I would have left Tanking after loosing the second crew ! I liked Micheal Wittman's Caan strategy hitting the first and last tank in a column then picking off one by one
Call it Brutal but many Warriors fought the same way [ Having the NVKD positioned a football field 100 Meters behind in case of a mass panic retreat Stalin's Not One Step Back ! NVKD were to kill their own ]
Very rare that he survived the entire war like that.
I love playing world of tanks blitz and you can ram each other on there. I thought it was just like a cool possibility they put in the game, I never actually thought about tanks being close enough in battle to ram each other. Cool story.
Funny enough i always get rammed there especially by guys using russian tanks like the T-34 sometimes some other guys ram me with more modern russian tanks like the T-54 or T-62
Guy was a warrior great video just wished i could hear him talking over all the explosions
@43:55 Ludwig: "I cannot understand we were praying to God to win the war and kill others!" That's deep. 😔💔💔💔
War is stupid but fun to watch these documenteries.
Greatly underestimated what it takes to live through a Russian winter.
The German military intelligence during WWII is so inept that they were filled with Soviet moles at the end, so don’t take their words highly.
GRATE‼️☝️
This guy has several guardian angels
Incredible story.
Almost killed by friendly fire in the end.
That part was rather vague.. I thought it was americans using a hetzer that fired at him. By that point they owned a lot of german vehicles.
We need more of these
I love this channel man.
What an incredible war experience ..
When History Channel showed real History. Not Pawn Stars, and other BS
This guy was a jinx, always getting hit and someone getting torn apart.
More like the ultimate survival horror story, especially when he speaks about the graveyard he went through. An actual graveyard.
the t 34 is a beautiful tank
