I remember that in high school, the school took us the the valley of tears memorial and we heard the story directly from Avigdor Kahalani and I have to say, it was the first time I have ever seen a truly great man, and the first time I saw a what seamed to me like a war hearo. I remember him telling us that he comes to the memorial every year to honour his soldiers and friends. when he finished the telling us the story of the battle we all stood for a moment of silence to honour the dead, but as we stood in silence Kahalani shed tears for his dead friends. as much of a victory as the war was it was a greater loss.
A friend who was a tank commander in the 6 Day War told me that the attack on Yom Kippur was really a blessing for Israel. Why? Everybody was in Shul (Synagogue) so the mobilization began with many reservists already concentrated at a group pickup point. The civilian buses immediately became troop transports, according to plan. Mobilization was accomplished in less than 12 hours. If it had not been such a important holy day, the reservists would have been scattered all over the country, scrambling to find transport.
Surely the reservists in any given synagogue are from units spread all across the Golan front, West Bank and Sinai. If they are deploying to their respective units, the advantage of fewer pick up points is lost. So there had to be some additional logistical planning to get the reservists to the right units.
Syrian offensive tanks are old, unlike Israeli tanks. Except for Egypt leaving the Syrians to fight alone. There were betrayals in the Syrian army and Hafez al-Assad handed over the lands.
That's because our most powerful weapon is the fact we have no where else to go...and we ain't leaving. When we say never again, it's not just a slogan, it's a slogan backed up with hundreds of nuclear weapons at the ready, more than India's and Pakistan's combined.
When I read all the woke anti-Israel comments on social media it makes my blood boil. These moronic Jew haters need to study some basic history to realize that Israel is NOT evil ! God bless Israel and the IDF. Support CUFI
As an armored tactics instructor in the early 1980's at Ft Knox we would often have students from friendly foreign countries enrolled. One semester we had a senior Israeli NCO/tank commander who had been involved in the Yom Kippur fight. He was a wealth of information and spoke to us of his part in the battle in the northern sector, tactics used plus logistics and fire support. His stories were fascinating and for a good part of one day, he was the instructor and I was the student. Several years later I was fortunate enough to be TDY to Israel and worked directly with the IDF. The respect for the nation of Israel I gained in those months has lasted a lifetime. The United States must never turn its back on this great nation and its people. They alone are our 'only' true allies in the Middle East.
my neighbour in munich worked for telemit, a manufacturer of military communication systems. he told me that the syrian tankers had a unique communication system. only the unit commanders could send and recieve messages, all others could only recieve. this meant that the unit commander‘s tanks had 2 antennae (with pennants no less) and all others had only one. it was therefore relatively easy to indentify the commanders‘ tanks and attack them first, leading the rest leaderless.
Thats correct but its not unique, its just standard Soviet military doctrine. USSR sold them the tanks, trained them on how to use them and showed them battle tactics and doctrine. Doctrine says that for a unit commander they get a K-variant of the tank with K standing for Komandirskiy. The K-variant of the standard tank has an extra radio which of course gets an extra antenna. There's a novel called Red Storm Rising written in the 80's by Tom Clancy and in it a fictional battle took place between American and Soviet tankers. The American tankers were trained to look out for enemy tanks with an two radio antennas because that means that they are a platoon or company commander. Tom Clancy is known for writing books that are pretty technically accurate because he actually did research and probably got to interview folks and do tours and whatnot.
@Mezei Miklós You`d be surprised how stupid things that are, were not so stupid in hindsight until the theory is put into the test... Take operation barbarossa, everyone at the time thought the soviets were done for... but look at what happened, another example is riding a horse, back then in forgotten ancient times, everyone thought it was stupid. Until someone thought it was a good idea(or a funny one) to ride on its back... Stupid is only stupid to those who didnt have to be the first one to try something new...
I remember a joke I heard about the Yom Kippur War: "Who are the greatest generals of all time?" Answer: "Kutuzov, Stalin, and Anwar Sadat." Question: "Why are they great generals?" Answer: "Well, Kutuzov lured Napoleon deep into Russia and when winter came, the French army froze and could be easily defeated. Stalin lured Hitler's army deep into Russia and when winter came, the Germans froze and were easily defeated. Anwar Sadat? Well, he lured the Israeli army deep into Egypt during the Yom Kippur War. Now he is waiting for winter and the snow and ice to finish off the Israelis...
Oh....and the point of Syrian aggression by attacking over Yom Kippur in 1973 was NOT just to regain territories lost to Israel in 1967 but rather to destroy Israel itself. That’s been the point of every attack against Israel since 1948, the extermination of Israel. These wars for Israel are wars of national survival.
@Hello Hallo Even before Israel declared independence Arab countries confirmed they will go in to kill all Jews. That was what set it all of. This has not changed up to today. It was openly declared and no secret.
Exactly! Same with Hamas..Amos 9:14 I will restore My people Israel from captivity; they will rebuild and inhabit the ruined cities. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. 15 I will firmly plant them in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land that I have given them,” says the LORD your God.

It's hot garbage! And for the time period it was almost completely outdated and redundant to all other tanks, T62, T64, T72 all were superior to the Centurions.
@@battleshipman56 You know the Centurion was produced from 1946 right? The T62 came a whole 15 years later. For its time, the Centurion was one of the best tanks. Maybe even THE best.
As a former armor officer, Lt Col Kahalani was one of my heroes. I read his book, The Heights of Courage and studied the Golan at the advanced course at Ft Knox. I was lucky to have an IDF Tank Battalion Commander in my small group who commanded a Merkava battalion in Lebanon and who served in the 73 war to teach us so many valuable lessons. This war inspired the US Army to become the lethal force it eventually became. Our unit's battle of Medina Ridge in 91 was victorious thanks in part to the invaluable lessons we learned from this war. Much respect to all who fought.
@@kekistanihelpdesk8508 It did but if you watch some older U.S generals speaking about Israel u will notice a huge admiration from them towards the Jewish state, A former secretary of state even mentioned that most U.S tactics deployed in the Middle east (Afghanistan-Iraq) were directly learned from the I.D.F years prior. Americans realized that fighting in this region is mainly against insurgent groups and not a western style army and which country fought such insurgent forces for decades now with vast experience? Israel.
Lessons learned from actual war results? Interesting concept. In Fredericksburg VA, the Union forces marched across an open field toward the Confederates with cannons behind stone walls. They never got to the walls. Later in Gettysburg PA, that exact same Confederate army marched across an open field toward the Union with cannons behind stone walls. They never got the walls. Why ever would a great military general direct his forces to do what he had seen with his own eyes resulted in destruction??? Sorry, but I have little appreciation for the intelligence of military leaders. Some of them, not including those presently running the US govt, have other good qualities.
What is most impressive is how harshly the IDF criticized itself for its response; despite the incredible performance of their reserve components. True professionals.

When speaking of possession of the Golan heights, note that when Syria held the Golan, prior to 1967, they routinely used the high ground to bombard Israeli towns and villages below the heights with random artillery attacks. There's a reason Israel took the Golan in '67, and it wasn't because of a desire for territorial expansion. Better leadership, better training (specially the air-force), often better equipment, and when they mobilize they have numbers too. They are good but they stand no chance if those tanks they were facing was the german or British army. (edit, panzer corp felt awkward in hindsight)
A personal story. I was 6yo at the time. My father's cousin was severely wounded in the Golan Heights while fighting in a special commando unit (Shaked). Was hit from thigh to chest with several machine-gun bullets. Was left with one lung. He stayed in an hospital for about a year, within walking distance from my home. Used to visit him from time to time to gorge on chocolates which he always had. Great guy. Became a top executive in one of Israel's biggest manufacturing firms. Always smiled. What a guy.
To quote Brezhnev. We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, "Save me!" If I remember correctly, one of the experiences the Israeli tankers made on the Golan heights, directly influenced the design choice of the Merkava to have a back door as feature which was made possible from the fact that the Merkava has its engine in the front where as most tanks have their engines in the rear. During the fighting on the Golan hights, the Centurion tanks the British issued to the Israelis would run out of amunition due to the prolonged fighting and the crews had to load new rounds from units in the rear which has proved to be quite cumbersome and problematic under fire. So in a similar situation resupplying the Merkava would be far easier and safer compared to the Centurions.

If that happened the Syrians would immediately start shelling the valley below, and nothing would have changed. They wont be getting it back any time soon.
The problem is that the Golan Heights are strategic for whoever controls them. Knowing their history, Israel would be foolish to hand the territory back over. Syria wants it for precisely that reason.
Especially when its strategically important for defense or offense in future wars. I Syria gets back the Golan Heights it will use it as a springboard to invade Israel again. Palestines leaders were incompetent and moronic to ally themselves with the likes of Syria. When dealing with war, it should always be first noted that François Fénelon summed it up pretty well: "All wars are civil wars, as all men are brothers". There is no glory in humiliating another human being to submission. Real glory is in construction. In helping humanity to advance. Not in killing others. There is no heroism in killing, only shame. This is why we call this place, "the valley of tears".

It was actually Israel's before the French whined they didn't have enough land to manage post-Ottoman so the Brits carved off part of the Palestine Mandate, which ended up being added to Syria. Jews have been living up there for almost 2000 years and had re-established villages and even a water-operated power station on the Heights well before 1948.

A good video, thank you. If you visit the Golan you will quickly see how important it is strategically. The Syrians used the Golan for years to shell Israeli farmers. So often the tractors had to be armoured. Israel has repeatedly offered Syria the Golan in return for peace; refused every time, the two are still 'at war' today. Finally Syria has lost the golan for the last time until they make peace. Today Israel quietly helps free of charge hundreds of desperate Syrians injured in their insane Syrian civil war. Today Iran is attempting to use the Golan as a springboard to attack Israel. I've been to the Golan, seen for myself the situation.

So get attacked at holiday is bless i though u guys not maniing enough garisson at those day
Surely the reservists in any given synagogue are from units spread all across the Golan front, West Bank and Sinai. If they are deploying to their respective units, the advantage of fewer pick up points is lost. So there had to be some additional logistical planning to get the reservists to the right units.
It's Israeli territory and way.

Obviously you've confused me with someone that gives a rat's rump.
my neighbour in munich worked for telemit, a manufacturer of military communication systems. he told me that the syrian tankers had a unique communication system. only the unit commanders could send and recieve messages, all others could only recieve. this meant that the unit commander‘s tanks had 2 antennae (with pennants no less) and all others had only one. it was therefore relatively easy to indentify the commanders‘ tanks and attack them first, leading the rest leaderless.

The Arab commentator's statement that there will be no peace unless Syria gets the Golan back is thus rather disingenuous; Syria certainly didn't allow Israel to have any peace while Syria held the Golan.

If I remember correctly, one of the experiences the Israeli tankers made on the Golan heights, directly influenced the design choice of the Merkava to have a back door as feature which was made possible from the fact that the Merkava has its engine in the front where as most tanks have their engines in the rear. During the fighting on the Golan hights, the Centurion tanks the British issued to the Israelis would run out of amunition due to the prolonged fighting and the crews had to load new rounds from units in the rear which has proved to be quite cumbersome and problematic under fire.
