• The Rise of Ancient Is...
Prof. Israel Finkelstein is a leading figure in the archaeological and historical research of Ancient Israel. Throughout forty years of field work and study Prof. Finkelstein has managed to change the way archaeology is conducted, and to greatly influence the way the bible is interpreted, and the history of Israel is reconstructed.
Prof. Finkelstein is a professor emeritus at Tel Aviv University and the head of the School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures at the University of Haifa. Prof. Finkelstein is active in the archaeology of the Levant and is an applicant of archaeological data in reconstructing biblical history. He is also known for applying the exact and life sciences in archaeological and historical reconstruction. Prof. Finkelstein is the current excavator of Megiddo, a key site for the study of the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Levant. Prof. Finkelstein is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and an associé étranger of the French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres.
Dr. Matthew J. Adams is an archaeologist who specializes in the Near East. He is currently director of the Jezreel Valley Regional Project and a Co-Director of the Megiddo Expedition along with Prof. Finkelstein.
Dr. Adams sat down with Prof. Finkelstein over several sessions to talk about how a lifetime of work has informed the story of Ancient Israel. These conversations became the series The Rise of Ancient Israel with Israel Finkelstein.

Can't thank you enough for these.
Honestly, whenever people complain about the internet and social media I always point out the miracle of having programming such as this and all the lectures from OI, and Universities and bookstores!! All at my fingertips and much of it at no cost. It's fantastic.
I'm really sorry that my father didn't live long enough to take advantage of all the great things that internet has to offer.
To be honest though, if he were here today we'd probably stand hours sitting across from each other looking stuff up on the internet to prove that we are correct about whatever subject we happen to be arguing about. LOL!
This show is great thank you very much keep up the good work
Your words are very kind, thank you for your encouragement and support 🙏
So broad and deep that I have to listen to each episode 2 or 3 times to absorb enough of the details to satisfy my curiosity, but what an intriguing, enlightening pastime!
Thank you to all the team at Kedem, to the armies of archaeologists working like so many ants over every inch of the land for more than a century, and to Dr Israel (aptly named!) Finkelstein for summing up the current scholarly consensus. You have enriched my life!😊❤
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words! Many more episodes to come soon🙏
What a great video series you guys created. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Marvelous exposition
Thank you. I was waiting for this
Thank you 🙏 25 more episodes of this series will be uploaded
Thanks for all these great videos. I am thoroughly enjoying them. Minor technical question: Can you add some blank video at the end over which to put the end cards instead of placing the end cards over the credits? That would allow us to read the credits which are currently half covered . Thanks again.
Thank you for your words and suggestion. Sure, will try to fix it in the next episodes.
Do you have recommendations of books in English discussing the topics present by Kedem talks? I am truly loving these discussions.
Thank you :) We link the the relevant books at the description of each episode
I'm starting to wonder if the progression in Israel, is not more about how the Habiru warlords who made disorder in the highlands interacted with teh chieftains of the city states that were tehre, and eventually got control of them and managed to establish stable kingdoms.
I lost my notes from 30 years ago. I had found that two tribes, probably Menasseh and Ephraim, formed their earliest pact that made up Israel, at Shechem. That is hidden in the positive preservations of stories about the pagan temple at Shechem where everyone in the region ratified all covenants, which is weird, and in the seeming stories that a crucial pact that made Israel was formed at Shechem, and also that two of the tribes were united before the rest were. (I realize the existence of some of the other tribes is controversial.) I wish I could recover this information now. It seems like noone is talking about it. The stuff I read in the 1990s was not written more recently than the 1980s; perhaps that is why I can't find it.
Dank jullie Matthew en Israel voor de interessante gesprekken.
Een kleine observatie.
El and Elohim seems to me to be a general description of different deities. Other gods are not denied in the Tenach. YHWH is the description of a specific god, as is Baal, for example. It does not seem helpful to me to speak of worshipping El. This view relies mainly on the Documentary Hypothesis which is outdated.
Israel means he who wrestles with gods. Jacob wrestles with the "angel" of Esau.
Jewish tradition identifies Esau with Rome. According to Friedrich Nietzsche, all world history can be summed up in the phrase Rom gegen Judäa, Judäa gegen Rom.
(to avoid misunderstanding, the struggle (which begins in Rebecca's womb) is not for the destruction of the brother but for his redemption).
Ultimately, the "war" is for the healing of the world (cosmos).
Do u guys have all the 30 episodes (?) on this series done already?
26 to be precise. The editing process is ongoing, we release each episode as soon as it's ready
What is the area of “ highlands”?
Not very different than the area of todays’ West Bank, the hills of Samaria and Judea
Please visit Tal Al Hammam where Sodom was located. The archeology there amazing. Abraham described the meteor air burst that destroyed the city
Thanks. To be honest (put aside the archeology of the site which is very interesting by itself) we see this theory as a pseudo-science. The matter of fact is that we are not familiar with any serious archeology supporting such claims, nor agreeing with the identification of the site as the Biblical Sodom.
Why are you reposting this series of videos? They're all already on UA-cam
It is not the same. We added illustrations, graphics and made sound improvements to the original videos in collaboration with Prof. Finkelstein
@@KEDEMChannel ah thanks for explaining. Loving your new channel! Fantastic stuff
Is Ra El?
The Southern Kingdom, was not destroyed, in the early centuries It continued to the first century, when the people saw, the Great Tribulation.
At this point you guys 'should have' brought. into your discussion the latest archaeological find in Israel (Some say one of The Greatest finds-EVER!) And that being the - 'Curse Tablet found on Mt Ebal-' of which is just north of Shechem !!! And which is recorded in (Deut. 27- & Josh.8.-) and is 3500 years old and DOES 100% confirm The Name of YAHWEH - despite whatever Religious men have to say!!!
JHW
Just as an update to all the hubbub about that tablet, it's all bullshit, just like most stuff related to striklind, he is a great believer in the bible and happily fake whatever he thinks he can get away with.
The word "FALL" is incorrect, and so is the perception of different entities, an ancient one and a current one. The Israel of today is the same Israel of antiquity, one people, one unbroken historical Timeline. Israel is an Indigenous Ethno-Tribal Nation with a homeland located in a difficult agricultural environment, and a Geopolitical gateway to 3 major continents, thus Israel suffered formidable challenges to its existence which it learnt to overcome through adaptations. Indigenous culture is ALWAYS an adaptation for survival, and so is Judaism; however, it has been more successful then others, the thing that got the Greco-Roman Empire so FRUSTRATED, as evident by the destructive assault they perpetrated on Judea and the Jews; But the Greco-Roman Empire, ALSO DIDN'T FALL, it ADAPTED by robbing the Tribal Treasures and SYSTEM of the Jews. Israel can keep its name because its system of adaptation is its own; not a Highway Robbery of other people's cultures and Tribal Treasures...Israel doesn't need to hide itself under different names and masks, Rome does; and so Israel and Rome of iniquity still exist LOUD AND STRONG as always having the same type of relationship with each-other.
4clempt - R u suggesting that there is one continuing Israel from antiquity until today that it is always rising its way into history?
@@nikotsiopinis9909OF COURSE!
Hilarious, if it wasnt the basis of a genocide. The people of Palestine are the continuous people of the area, that included Judiasm being dominant for 1 out of the last 5 millenia.
Israel. If you hurry you can be the first to have a program ",The rise and fall of Modern Israel".
Israel will never fall cause the good always ultimately win
@@Restrocket We are doing it to ourselves. On another note. Since when did "right" have anything to do with winning. That happened maybe once or twice in history.
The name El isn’t a problem, it’s a matter of semantics. Plus, El is just another name for God, it’s one of His attributes.
