    I appreciate the way you talked about Between Shades of Grey. As someone who has experienced Grief that very few people have to walk through, it can be hard to empathize with someone as they talk about the hard things in their life. Often times I wished I could trade places with them, or to look them dead in the eyes and tell them I would gladly take all of their pain and sorrow if they could carry mine for a day. But then God showed me that no matter how big or small the grief, each person is fighting their own battle. And to compare grief is to minimize the fact that no matter what you are walking through, grief and pain are just as stark for you as they are for me.

    Thank you for participating sister. I loved seeing your thoughts on these books and what you picked for each prompt. Between Shades of Gray - I read it years ago and I was sobbing!

    I never did like watching or reading people suffering. But after becoming a mother, I can’t stomach it, at all! It’s unbearable to me. Thank you for sharing your heart with us. ❤ Recorder sounds good! I think I’ll add those to my TBR. But I also prefer the floppy paperbacks. 🥰

      You mentioned in another comment about not being able to read about suffering so I’ll give a warning - there are some pretty descriptive depictions of the suffering the family faced as Jews or at the least witnessed. Definitely made me cry a few times 😭

    Between Shades of Grey is so good! Loved hearing your thoughts on it. I love when a book puts our own lives into perspective. I so appreciate your thoughts on Death at La Fenice!! I'm of the exact as mindset / opinion as you regarding the book's content. It has been on my TBR for a while and while I normally don't mind darker themes in books, I think I'll skip this one!!

      I really wanted to like it, but yes. It just got so dark and heavy and no themes of redemption at all. 😣

    Thank you Carmen. I agree with you on certain moral content. It’s a form of grooming and an attempt to try to make something abnormal seem normal and acceptable. I just had a talk with my 13 year old granddaughter about books she is told to read for school. I told her to let the teacher know that she would like a different book, perhaps a classic. I warned her about authors pushing a certain narrative that is not healthy.

    Between Shades of Grey sounds so good, even if it will be heartbreaking. I really need to pick up Ruta Sepetys at some point.
    I've only read 2 Kristy Cambron books, The Lost Castle and Castle on the Rise, which are part of the same series. and enjoyed the second one a lot more than the first. They both have three timelines, one present and two historical, and the first book just didn't feel that well fleshed out plot- or character-wise. The second book was much more fleshed out and had a lot more depth to it. I've thought about trying some of her standalones, but I'm not sure which ones would be best to read.
    And thank you for being honest about your opinions and your beliefs. I know it can be hard being a Christian and expressing your beliefs when you know there will likely be backlash, but I do appreciate you discussing what's in the books that you don't agree with so those of us who shares your beliefs can be aware of them.

      Yes, Ruta Sepetys is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This is only my second book that I read of hers, but I definitely want to keep reading her books. I’ve read Fountains of Silence and absolutely love that one.
      And you put it better than I did as far as Kristy Cambron’s books. Some of the plot lines or characters weren’t totally fleshed out as much as I would have liked them to be. But overall still a good story, but I would have to read some more of her books to know if she’s an author that I want to really keep reading.
      And thank you for the encouragement. I wrestled a lot to know if and how much I wanted to talk about it. I was even praying while I was editing to know if I needed to cut anything out, what to leave in, etc; and also simply for courage to speak the truth and that people would hear my heart. It’s such a sensitive subject, and I always want to be kind, but when it comes down to it, I’d rather stand on God‘s word, then cater to the world’s opinions. 🤍

    I also read Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon and felt similarly to you. I loved the writing. I had actually forgotten what specifically it was that I didn't like. Now I remember 🙂. I did read the second book. I still loved the writing and Brunetti and his family, but the content was pretty dark and my notes say that the ending left me feeling unsettled. I haven't read any more. I will be interested to hear what you think if you do read it.

    • @carmenjanae
      @carmenjanae  2 місяці тому

      Hhmm interesting! Unsettled is a good word. I’m glad to know this though! I may just skip reading any more. Unless I come across it for cheap or something. 😆 but yeah … even though the case was solved, the whole situation was just sad and left me feeling dark. . . And with it being a secular book it makes sense. There was no theme of Justice or redemption. Just revenge and destruction. 😕
