I enjoy watching Joey perform. He’s great to see live. However there is a ceiling to his act. There is a thing as people being “indie for life”. They should not be on a national tv show and AEW is slowly skewing more toward reducing these “indie lifers” from their show. I do think he was hired mostly for the shock value and to bolster the new AEW roster. I don’t think Joey and AEW were a good pairing but Joey can certainly go out and continue being one of the biggest stars of the indies.
I feel like Orange and Danhausen’s acts both feel stepped on in AEW. Not bad just really good on the indies and underwhelming on AEW TV. I guess if you never saw it on the indies than maybe it’s better.
@@cclizarkb yes, I’ve seen Orange many times on the indies and I really enjoy him (although yes, his act is very one note). I think AEW did a disservice to him in how they present him and how they fail to convey who he is. Take the first time he showed up in AEW in that battle Royale. The camera failed to show how he’s slow to enter the match and then later they showed him doing the slow kicks to Tommy Dreamer but there was no “set up”. It was just this odd thing they probably made zero sense to someone who had never seen his act before. They just plop him on tv and give audiences no point of reference. I still don’t like him as a character in the AEW tv show but I have fond memories of him on the indies. Similar with Danhausen, I didn’t see him live so I’m just confused and weirded out by him and felt like I’m not in on the gag.

Joey just focus too much on wrestling presentation rather than character development and promo skill. He probably have more experience tha half of the roster but his promo and gimmick is just not good.
I would have to agree. I don't know much about Joey since he was mainly on Dark when I started watching but this topic is really juicy and I was really interested in hearing what he had to say until he started talking. I don't know if he was tired or just did not want to be there but the way he was responding to the question made it boring.
The real problem is that when AEW started it was more of like what "All In" originally was... a celebration of all types of wrestling. You had WWE/WCW-style wrestling, but you also had ECW & crazy hardcore stuff, Japan-style, the Joshi wrestlers, funny/joke spots, the young bucks & lucha bros with their PWG/AAA no rules all non-stop high spots nonsense, etc. But as time has gone on, almost all of those other styles had been dialed back or removed entirely from AEW. The hardcore deathmatch stuff being the most glaring, probably since they just simply can't do it on regular TV and really only on PPV. Hell, they did some once & had WWE itself and WWE's fanboys calling the advertisers to try and get them to kill AEW. Darby Allin was able to transition from death matches to Jeff Hardy-style regular wrestling with a few dangerous spots around the ring; Janela really couldn't / can't. Same for Jimmy Havoc (though he had other problems too). I was in the crowd for one of AEW's first TV shows, and the dark match was Janela vs Kenny Omega in a 20 min deathmatch after the show was over, going through tables, barbed wire, chairs, etc. It's one of the best matches I've ever seen, and almost everybody stayed and was super into it and it was the best match of the night; and it was FAR better than the hardcore match Kenny had w/ Moxley. But it wasn't allowed on TV... and only bits even made it onto UA-cam.
Well he can always say he main evented Fyter Fest 2019 with Moxley. Unfortunately he never was able to keep a spot, but his style just wasn't t.v friendly. Darby can do all the crazy things Joey can, and he connects to the crowd in a way Joey doesn't. Impact or MLW may be his only shot now.
He's not exaggerating about the Dark match he had with Sonny Kiss at the Prudential Center. I was there that night and it was a great short match with a super hot crowd. Honestly one of the highlights of that entire show, Dynamite and Rampage taping included.

And their ratings is suffering for it. These indie guys were going out their willing to kill themselves for cheers. Now with the slew of Toni storms and ruby Sohos u see the workrate is plummeting.
@@kreed82 i don't really keep track of the ratings but i wonder if Hangman Page as champ had anything to do with it.
i feel like he is lackluster as champ and the title should have gone to Bryan Danielson when he was red-hot. Also pairing Page with Dark Order (who i don't like) really brought him down for me.
As for the women, Jade Cargill as champ is not fun for me to watch because she's still learning to wrestle but I think she looks cool and can usually cut a good promo. I would like to see Thunder Rosa featured more and maybe Athena can take Jade's title.

I would have to agree. I don't know much about Joey since he was mainly on Dark when I started watching but this topic is really juicy and I was really interested in hearing what he had to say until he started talking. I don't know if he was tired or just did not want to be there but the way he was responding to the question made it boring.
I enjoyed jelly janella's work in AEW. He and Penelope were a great pair.
The reason it went wrong: Joey Janela.
2 untrained marks dropping each other on their heads in garbage wasn't the best match ever. It's shit.
Need to have a balance. You still get different types of wrestling.
Where it went wrong? Joey Janella isnt anywhere near on the level of someone who should be in a big time promotion.
