NOVASTORM video review for Panasonic 3DO. Classic Game Room reviews NOVASTORM ffor Panasonic 3DO from Psygnosis released in 1994, a FMV style space ship shooter like Space Harrier meets Z-Buffered digital images and 90's techno.
This is probably the best fmv game you'll find, as it's fast paced and very enjoyable. I really like the atmosphere and visuals. It's very similar to Total Eclipse, which uses polygons, and is better in some ways. Both games show that the 3DO was a cool machine for its time. I will be playing this game again.
I like how the art style of this game looks. I don't think I've ever seen a game that looks like this.
I remember seeing this for the first time on Gamesmaster in the uk and my jaw hit the floor. Then soon after I brought a 3DO FZ1 and still have it to this day. Under rated console.
The shooting sound effect sounds very similar to the sound that plays for the Daily Double on Jeopardy.
Truth is that this is the story for the next Terminator series, after humanity destroyed Sky-net they built and worshiped a computer again, then this happened.
When will humanity learn!
A full motion video game that actually looks very badass.
Another awesome review, for an awesome game,
Reminds me of MicroCosm on the Sega CD, a game which you should review. I could donate my copy if you want it.
Out of all Novastorm versions, the 3DO one is arguably the worst. The term "arguably" makes an
appearance only because the Playstation version may actually snatch those dubious laurels from
the venerable Panasonic's digital baby. 3DO version removes and replaces a lot of the creative
content from the original game - with something far more mundane and uninspired (bosses...).
The gameplay itself has been not only watered down, becoming less responsive and having no
feedback, but the shooting mechanics have also been simplified and smooshed together into
something incoherent. If that was not enough - even the intro cutscene has been turned into
something strange, with most of the content missing... Similar fate befell another 3DO game:
Virtuoso. Although the famous duo of Flashback and Another World - have suffered similarly,
although to a lesser degree.
The best and the prettiest version of Novastorm - is the PC one. Nothing else comes close.
Although, Sega Mega-CD conversion is rather descent as well, - having all of the content intact, even
boasting the extended game mechanics. The only issue with the MCD version is the significantly
inferior audio, which bothers more than the traditionally (for Sega Mega CD) downgraded FMV.
3DO was a powerful enough console, yet far not always the said power was used intelligently.
Sometimes they did phenomenal job: Poed, Road Rash, Megarace, Need for Speed, Way of the
Warrior, Gex, Killing Time, Total Eclipse, Slayer, Starblade, Escape from Monster Manor.
And other times, it did shamefully lose the competition to Mega-CD: BC Racers, Novastorm,
Microcosm, Rebel Assault. Sometimes, it even produced titles that would lose even to the 16bit
Sega Megadrive: Iron Angel of the Apocalypse VS Zero Tolerance, where ZT smashes 3DO into
tiny little 32 bits.
3DO was too far ahead of its time, for the software engineers to really understand what to do
with it. Eventually, it did produce too many weird (such as Bladeforce or Immercenary) or
underdeveloped games, which brought about its demise. Nonetheless, it had a good run for
the time it was in. And had some good games to play, even after all these years.
OMG ! best quote ever :
"...the game is held together with a scotch tape !"
Mark awesome as always !
I look back on these old 3DO games and almost feel insulted. It is a good thing I never purchased this system back in the day.
It's a pitty you haven't play the original PC version. This port to consoles kills the best part of the game: music. The original soundtrack is one of the best ever made, and the new sound effects doesn't works too. Forget the console version and check the PC videos.
But indeed, it's a game made with passion. The level design and cinematics are remarkable, with many minutes useless for playing, just the ship flying... this is old school way, playing with your imagination.
I have this for the PC, it's more advanced (you get "credits" from enemies which you can collect and use to buy powerups). The music isn't CD quality, but it's still very good. I never knew this was made for 3DO, but it makes sense, considering the cutscenes and gameplay style. On the PC, the cutscenes don't even work, they are jerky.
@girochin007 I kinda feel your pain. I actually don't have X-Wing, but I do have X-Wing Alliance and it doesn't work anymore either. =(
You might wanna try DOSBox though. And X-Wing Alliance might work on VMWare (in a Win98 machine w/ HW acceleration), but I'm too lazy to try it.
I want to correct part of what I said: "The music isn't CD quality, but it's still very good. "
The PC music is not SAMPLED music, like an MP3 (I guess that it uses a tracker format, xm or .it), but it is excellent anyway, much better than the 3DO's soundtrack.
the games form that time are weird, becouse all the cgs they seemed to be so beyond what we had at the time, but when actualy they were the same or worse
and nowdays when we actualy have games that go beyond, we play retrogames :PPP
@vittau I would be happy if they just re-released X-Wing so it was playable on a current platform... Mostly because I paid $50 for the strategy guide, and the 3.5" floppies the game came on died, so I'm $100+ into that game already, and can't play it now.
The visuals on the 3do version are really slick, but the soundtrack of the PC version (by Rik Ede) is epic and gives the music of this version a run for the money. You have to search it up on youtube. The PC soundtrack of this game is legend.
What's amazing is that today's consoles can generate realtime-rendered 3D graphics that look more realistic than the CGI in this game. But these graphics were awesome for the time it came out.
I can imagine this was mindblowing back in 1994, it even looks pretty good by todays standards.
It sounded and looked as cool as inconsistent...some parts were great but not everything was convincingly integrated...back then they started experimented with integrating live action filmed scenes with animation and it didn't work very well. See games like 7th Guest (enjoyable puzzle game though). A much tighter art direction would have helped but these guys were clearly going for a simple shooter game in an ultra cool package. You felt a bit cheated with the background camera on rails, not having much control and just shooting at stuff with a pre-rendered backdrop. The Rebel Assault games from the wonderful Lucasarts were probably the best in this genre.
try pc versio and that has best music soundtrack over other novastorm versios.
pc versio has secret tomate lecel in firs level first stage typing keyboard during gameplay: tomatoes
3DO is very underated, and is unfairly associated with the CDi. It actually had a decent library for its time. Definitely better video quality than the Sega Mega CD and CDi. I would say it was the first to get the best ports of arcade or PC games. It's too bad the expensive price made it lose to other systems. It also has a Mega Drive like gamepad, which I guess is good, but I still would prefer SNES styled like today's controllers.
@eyesofnova Nah, Rogue Squadron is arcade-ish. It's still a pretty good game though.
But the X-Wing games are kinda like a "simulation", if that makes any sense...
@wolfmap Actually I thought it could be more realistic, since Doom and many FPS games came out in the 90s. I always told myself that some day, we will have facial recognition to completely mimic human and creature movements in video games, that we couldn't tell the difference between movie and video game quality.
This is just like Rebel Assault.
Btw, Lucas Arts should do an X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter sequel. Just imagine how awesome it could be with today's hardware...
Lots of effort, but in the wrong places. In my books, any game developer who doesn't put gameplay as their top priority should be making movies instead.
It's a shame that the 3DO wasn't more popular than the Sega CD; the full-motion video of the 3DO always looked vastly superior to the Sega CD.
Had the MegaCD version and man it looked ugly compared to this much more colourful version. Might just dig it out and give it a spin again :)
Man, the 3DO version feels so much different than the DOS version, especially the soundtrack.
I'll take the DOS soundtrack any day, please.
So would I, but the 3DO version is interesting in its own right. Weirdly, although the 3DO version is a tweaked port of the original Fm Towns version, it has a different soundtrack, while the Sega CD port has a conversion of the FM Towns soundtrack but plays differently.
Star Wars Rebel Assault II on the PS One, remember taht one? I actually had fun with it!!!
I had this for the mega CD. Not too bad on there... Though the usual murky dithered graphics did leave you scratching your head sometimes, as to quite what you were looking at. 3do looks way clearer
So basically, it’s Microcosm.
Same game engine, same dev team - we rolled straight off Microcosm onto this one :-)
@vittau
I LOVED that game!!! flying trough space for 5 minutes just to get youre ass kicked when you arive never was more fun^^
Did anyone else get the reference to the Scorpions "Rhythm of Love" music video?
I did.
And I wasn't even alive when it came out.
'Mohammed from Quatar' is a really vauge if you consider it's the most common name there, It's like saying this game was given by 'John from America'
i swear to god for a minute i thought the spaceship was gonna crash into that pillar in the opening cutscene... :P
I played it on the PSONE, and it was awesome and it looks a lot better, but the first disc stopped working and i couldn't play it anymore :(
Why did I spend all my time getting the Deus Ex Machina trophy when I could of been playing this masterpiece!
Wow. I absolutely forgot about this game! I owned it for PC and I remember me and 5 friends taking turns playing it. At that time, we thought graphics could never get more realistic than that.I miss the time...
From the same guys that made Microcosm - and it's VERY similar. Microcosm didn't have the z-buffer though.
WOW HOW DID I OVERLOOK THIS GAME CLEARLY IT DESERVES A SEAT @THE PANASONIC 3DO TABLE👍😁💪😎💪😉
@girochin007 Oh nevermind, your floppies died. =(
It shouldn't be too hard to find a download though.
I own this for my 3DO and it's fantastic! Does anyone know if the PS1 version has different stages??
I had this on PS1. I don't think it had those cut scenes but it was a great game none the less.
Anyone else thought the logo at first said Nounstorm? FMV + spelling games would be great.
Great review as always. It wold great to see you review Super Wing Commander for the 3DO.
This game looks awesome, great graphics, and anybody else thought at 0:57 " Obi Wan! NOOO"
Do Any Of You Have A Friend Who Hates Classic Games, And You Wanna Punch Them In The Face?
I seriously don't miss the FMV obsessed early 90s and don't care to revisit them either.
This game's sound track sounds like CyberWar (a quazi-sequel to The Lawnmower Man)
This game looks basically like StarFox 64...seems cool since it doesn't have furries in it. :)
For some reason..this game makes me think of Sewer Shark for the Sega CD *lol*
@mspeter97 Unfortunately not, but it's not much like the X-Wing series though.
cgr would be nothing without Muhamad
its like hes part of the cgr crew..
great game! i have it on pc and play it since the mid-90s from time to time :-)
@vittau yeah but nowadays everyone wants FPS COD type games ....... i WANT QUALITY
I had it for PC and have played it a lot! Great classic for 1994!... ty!
i think it's safe to say that it's probably Mohammad who sent it to you
3DO games are intriguing to me, probably because I couldn't afford one.
they shuld make a psp or 3ds port to this game, that would be awesone!
Hey, Mark! How about reviewing Star Wars Rebel Assault for the 3DO?
Im tired of rap music in games...
are you the voiceof the guy in the wheelchair on family guy
Wow this guy is exactly opposite of angry video game nerd :P
Ok Mohammed. It was fun, believe me it was. But not now. Not anymore.
"I think the spreadshot is the most effective." This applies in so many games.
i think this days Vectrex is more popular than XboxOne lol!
tht guys a legend!!!!!!! we need to find out his account
I had this for PC. Really hard. I didn't get very far.
remake with the same gameplay and story... PLEASE!!!!!!
I think this is related to Microcosm on the sega CD.
tobuscus ad? awesomeness but not as awesome as mark!
what does this data grid think he is? edit station 1?!!?
This would've been an aswesome sight back in '94.
i believe this game was also released on sega cd
@searcher5123 How dare you insult Lord Karnage!
The font kinda makes it look like "NOUNSTORM".
Looks like a slightly less crappy Microcosm xD
@PioloAskal2009 Someone... make a call to Moosejaw.
@chuckfulpingnorris ur ACTUALLY 5th
X-Wing Vs. Street Fighter! Who's with me?!
This game seems similar to Iridion 3D on the GBA
MY EARS ARE BEING POUNDED SO HARD, DAMNIT
@MAT0R0 What do you have against furries?
@vittau already tried Star Wars trilogy Arcade?
Mohammed from quatar is freaking loaded
scorpions rhythm of love lol totally?
plz donate me all your games Mohammed!
For great justice.
Review Zero Wing!
@vittau We need a new Rouge Squadron
@gtvnetwork I was wondering that too.
hey that music was pretty kick-ass
@shaurz
More like how badass.
Dam it it's not on the app store
@searcher5123 Dont rant on mark!
What I think is a crime though about this game. Is that I can hardly find an actual review of the pc version. Especially if you look for a "retrospec" type of review. Wich is a shame because IMO the DOS version clearly aged better than most other ports of this game. I still play it from time to time. Not because the game is "great" but because it manages to pull a smile out of me. Just like when I first played it as a kid. And the music is also FAR FAR better on the dos port. Nothing groundbreaking as a whole but theres 2-3 tracks that really nails it. If anybody is willing and interested to play this. Don't bother with the 3DO or whatever version. Just hunt down the dos version and have fun!
aka Scavenger 4 on the FM Towns Marty
I love that you do 3DO reviews.
descriptions got a lot shorter
This game was epic! I think it was one of the BEST shooters for the 3DO. The music and the gameplay was totally awesome despite the slow ups. This game I think was ahead of its time. *sigh* I miss my 3DO.
