The fact someone can take a $5 paper holder and sell it as a $90 "wifi radiation protection device" and people not only bought it but also gave it 5 star reviews has made me give up on humanity as a species.

We were having trouble with WiFi dropping out in the offices in my Dad's business. The access point was was located on the other side of the wall, so only a short distance away. After racking my brain for months, I finally figured it out. The wall between the access point and the offices had stucco on it, which is made with a metal mesh. The wall was basically a Farady wall. While it didn't completely block the signal, any devices using WiFi behind that wall would experience frequent signal drops.
Now that makes SENSE!! Metal does block electromagnetic radiation. So this guy is really not very smart. This Linus guy, he really didn't measure this correctly. He should have shown us what happens when he detected the EMF using an EMF detector. From Amazon:
"How do you know that it is working?
"
Answer: Hello! You may use an EMF tester, but if you do not have on available, one home test is to notice that there is less dust gathering around your router, then before it was inside the Faraday cage. EMF emissions dry out air and cause a lot of dust to accumulate around your electronics. If there is less dust than before, you can tell that less electromagnetic frequencies are escaping.
Another home test is to notice how you feel before and after the Faraday cage was used. if you work in an office space close to the router, sleep within a few yards of the router, or spend prolonged periods of time next to the router, you may notice a decline in your health-most noticeably in sleep quality and energy levels. When I put this faraday cage in my home, I noticed I slept better throughout the night and had more energy throughout the day. I also had more patience for my work and a subtle sense of well-being once my router was inside the cage. I used my EMF meter and saw that the EMF emissions around the box were much less than before I put it inside the cage. The effect on my health is cumulative, and subtle, but I did notice it right away, and my family noticed as well.
Faraday cages are gaining popularity today, but they have been around since 1836. The technology is simple but effective. Microwaves, the common kitchen appliance, come equipped with Faraday technology to protect against harmful radiation that could emit from the microwave without the Faraday cage (notice the pattern on the window of the microwave. That is a Faraday cage!)
If you have any other questions about using the Faraday cage, please ask away. This is a simple but truly fascinating item that will improve your home or work space! see less

Hi Linus I would take issue with your statement that a 5-10dB drop is not a lot. It being a logarithmic scale 5dB would be a 68% reduction and 10dB would be a 90% reduction.
Of course something you could mention is the cage is completely counter productive as devices can adjust their tx power to compensate for poor signal. So you would be attenuating the signal from the router sat 5-10m away from you while increasing the tx power(and battery usage) of the device you are holding in your hand.
As you accurately stated much better to just turn down the gain on your router.

My grandpa literally wraps his flip phone in tinfoil because he’s afraid of the government listening to him but mostly he does it to avoid scam calls it works on his old phone but his wife hates it cause she calls and he doesn't answer cause it doesn't come through
I mean they are listening to him, just probably not through his old phone. Also tinfoil won’t help
The thing is that they really are listening to him. I don't know if tinfoil works though. Just show him 'App Permissions' and 'Airplane Mode' and explain those 2 options. Should at least put his mind to ease a bit.
They are
Why not just turn it off?
I mean Edward Snowden took appart his phone and killed the microphone, and when he takes calles, he connects a headset, so I guess you grandpa has a point, if they want, they can listen
@Linus I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure you need to ground the faraday cage for it to be effective.
I had a use case that I had to block the wifi signal from a wireless access point no my desk (lab testing), so it wouldn't affect production wifi with same SSID. This video saved me some money or hassle of buying/returning these faraday cages!
Jakes giggle when you accused him of wasting your money is youtube gold.
Jake is kinda stupid. He could buy the 5$ paper holder, put a metal lid on it and could use the 60$ he saved as a one-time bonus payment from linus...

This puppy holds so much paper!!
I'm surprised they didn't also buy the Faraday defense one. They at least look like they're putting effort into their product lineup.

This group can benchmark so many items!
you should've connected the "paper holders" to ground, that would have been much more effective, if the metal parts are not connected to ground they mostly reflect em waves.
I think this started as a joke, and then they started making money at a 900% markup, and they've since been admitted to the hospital with chronic laughter.

Old video is old but for some reason the algorithm wants me to watch it.
In any case I kind of want a faraday cage for my ISPs router because every time I turn off the built-in WiFi it turns itself back on in a couple months, and the 2.4Ghz spectrum around my house is already extremely crowded.
Yeah, I didn't even realize it was old until you mentioned it.
Wait, you're telling me people store paper in mesh, allowing it to get all dusty? Sounds like a waste of 5 bucks!

That was my first thought as well. You can't complain about air flow not.
True Faraday cages require a ground plane meaning it needs to be grounded. Furthermore a real faraday cage would have a mesh sized appropriately to the size of the wavelength you are trying to block and would need signal attenuation testing done with an oscilloscope and some sensitive antennas.
Or you could just unplug your router for free?
I thought the next place he would go to check the signal would be to the bathroom. Obviosuly with the door closed, yelling so we could hear him and that we would hear a water flowing sound at the end... 🤣

To be fair, it was technically correct - the signal strength was reduced.
Do they have a version which blocks all 5 of the G's? I know they do one for 4G but I am worried that the left over 1G is going to be the worst G to stop.
That shot inside the box that pulls through the grommet - what lens, cos that was delicious!
