This universe roped me in with Transformers, but it really flourishes with the intertwining titles. I’m not a huge Gi Joe fan- but a chance to get into the a new take on this IP - and at the start from scratch (so I don’t have to worry about the mountains of back issues?) no less!? Count me in. Very happy to get back into comics because of this trio of titles.
@@BeelzeboogieI’ve always viewed them as complimentary properties as well. Having them crossover always made sense to me. Thrilled it’s being done with so much care and purpose currently!
@@CarlsCollection right, synergistic having the Giant war fighting robots, join a special ops military as their vehicles. Hasbro is smart to keep crossing these properties over because they work so well together.
@@Beelzeboogie even drawing back to the ‘86 movies with almost identical plots, I would agree- and it’s a logical move from a business standpoint having the DNA of these IP franchises align and work together. Getting back to the current books, they are great fresh takes on a 40 year IP, and adding an extra universe with void rivals really blends both TF & GI Joe together in a fresh composition. Really excited to see what this trio looks like this time next year.
Personally, I do like Transformers more, that's just my main fandom. But I also have appreciated GI Joe since the version I grew up with in the 80s. And I also really like when the two are presented as existing in the same universe, which is what Skybound does. And also, personally, I wish Jem had more serious consideration and was in the same universe because there's potential with the holographic technology and where it came from and possible subliminal messaging or social influencing plots that could have an impact on a shared universe. Super-scientist daughters adventuring under cover of being Pop stars would be cool, like give them a Johnny Quest element but throw giant robots, aliens, and terrorists into the plot. Like, there's a giant robot battles and the next day the Bentons are there doing humanitarian relief...and gathering intel on their father's mysterious ties or past.
Man, what a great first issue to set the stage for a brand new era of G.I. Joe. And frankly given all the difficulties the franchise has had over the last couple of years, it needs it. Really curious about the new character Risk. It's nice to see the creators willing to add new stuff instead of always rehashing the old. Also curious where Scarlett is in all this since her book is the only one of the four G.I.Joe mini-series that didn't get any representation in this.
I agree, it's good to see creative teams taking a...Risk with introducing new characters. ;) As for Scarlett, I could be wrong, but..I'm kind of not expecting to see her or the Arashikage until the end of this arc or into the second one. I'm thinking it's going to be a big moment when we get back to that storyline. But that's just a guess on my part.
I especially love in #1 Cobra Commander witnessing Duke action his reaction and Destro commentary are hilarious. Cobra Commander: Who da Hell is this guy? Destro: Duke a pain in the @## noise. Then by #2 preview the Commander is all, CC: I like him he's my kindred we should recruit him. Destro: SIR! He assaulted me with a headbutt CC: Damn Destro stop overselling I want him even more.
In the short interaction Baroness and Stalker had, Baroness says "Shut up you old stupid pig or I'll cut your throat" And Stalker replied with "Try it, and I'll kick the shit out of your ass, bring you to your mother and father, and show them how their princess turned up in an empty life. They brought you to this world so they may do us a favor and take you out of it." That's what Google translates roughly says Another neat detail I noticed, Duke says "We'll find out later, but first *we need to go on the defensive"* Clearly a nod and contrast to Optimus prime with his *"How do you feel going on the offensive?"* I really want to see them both interact in the future I also loved how it transitions from the Joe's meeting, in the screen panel they place Cobra, and the following panels we see the Cobra P.O.V. I'm lovin' it™
It wouldn’t be a Moonbase Three GI Joe without me promising that I’ll read these! At this point, I need to go ahead and read these online while I wait for Book 1’s release next year
One thing I've really enjoyed is that the artist actually draw real guns and have them ON MODEL You would not BELIEVE the amount of times I've seen weird abomination M16-alikes so having identifiable gear grounds it in a way that really fits with the Energon Universe as a whole Also they gave Duke an XM8 so it's an immediate win for me
Got a copy yesterday I enjoyed the issue a lot & what a way to end the issue. energon universe has kept me buying comics.. & I was a transformers kid Gi Joe wasn't on that much here in England
I'm Transformers, all day and tomorrow. I didnt hate G.I. Joe, I was just kind of indifferent. In fact i dont think i ever owned a single G.I. Joe toy when i was a kid, compared to the piles of TF's I managed to save from my childhood. Hell, I have TF fold-out catalogs that are older than my wife. But the Energon Universe has me hooked and i DEFINITELY give a crap about the Joes now. I'm missing MAYBE one or two issues from the various EU miniseries and i will NOT be missing any more from here on out. And I don't think it's just because it's been intertwined with Transformers and energon from the beginning either; I think part of it is, like you pointed out, "the franchise is in very capable hands." These people creating these comics are HELLA talented, and the passion and love they have for this IP and these characters is every bit as evident as DWJ's over in the TF book. Even if you DON'T read their editorials and letters to the fans etc, you can see it in the details and all the little nods to the 80's and how faithful they are to the characters and the tech, even AS they somehow at the same time make it fresh and original. Theyre just knocking it out the park and down the street man, like i really dont think this whole thing could be DONE any better.
Moonbase, great information aa always. That page of Cobra Commander, without his helmet, is beautiful and scary. I am looking forward to future stories. Transformers are my favorite, but this series is keeping me captivated. Happy Thanksgiving.
Heck yeah man, great recap of this stellar official start to the Joe side of things. I’m glad you mentioned CC reaching for his helmet and seeing the reflections in it. As a longtime fan of Reilly’s art that is something he does often. He loves drawing reflections to help cram in more storytelling details. He did it brilliantly numerous times in Duke #1 where Duke is remembering the encounter with Starscream (where we see the reflective SPLATT moment in Duke’s visor). I love his commitment to visual storytelling! Very much looking forward to seeing what he has cooked up for these next issues!
That's very true about Duke #1! I didn't make that connection, so thanks for pointing it out, man. :) Duke was my introduction to Reilly's art, but I'm loving it. Need to track down some other titles he's worked on.
I saw some receptions to GI Joe books from people who didn't got into them, mostly coming from none fans, who thought they were too nostalgia pandering that they didn't get, or simple they didn't got into Joe at all cause it wasn't that big outside of America, but as a none american who never grew up with Joes and was more casual enjoyer, EU comics actually got me more interested in the franchise. Heck, Cobra Commander miniseries actually made really on board witht that version of the character. Plus, I do think those miniseries served more as a set up for the main GI Joe book, plus as someone whose really interested how Energon Universe develops and how it connects to larger universe and how it will lead (plus, I do roll my eyes at critcism that GI joe piggy back on a success of Transformers, as if EU in general wasn't based on Transformers lore, like Void RIvals is literally TF book in disguise). Overall, I get why some people might not be into them, but personally it actually got me interested to learn more about the franchise.
GI Joe Fan. Transformers is trash. That said, I think this series looks fantastic. I guess a little trash can serve as spice, because I'm loving this series. Great videos, man!
The Energon Universe singlehandedly turned me into a GI JOE fan. Can't wait for the next issue!
I love seeing comments like this, as I think it's testament to how good a job Skybound is doing with these properties. 🔥

Transformers drew me into G.I Joe years ago, I find it hard to like one and dislike the other, their DNA is too similar.

I don't know much about Jem, but a comic with the set up you're describing here would get my attention!
My enjoyment of Skybound’s Energon Universe is equal parts each issue followed by your reviews. Keep up the awesome work, it’s very much appreciated!
Thank you, I truly appreciate that! I'm loving this continuity, and I really enjoy making videos on it, so it's a win-win. :)
2:13 this also happened in the Japanese continuity

Thanks for providing the translation, that's hilarious! 😂 Also, good call on Duke's line contrasting with OP's. I didn't put that together!
Finally. The video i was waiting for is here.
