I love this. A lot of the videos that cover any barbarian people hop between groups and blur the lines of who they're talking about, making it difficult to retain the information. I like that the focus stayed on the Vandals.
Thank you so much for mentioning the band, The Vandal's. When I heard the word and Simon's definition, I felt it described them perfectly. Great job and thank you for what you do.
Wenedzi (Veneti) after Wandale (Vandals) - ancient Arian (Slavic peoples) living in Central and Eastern Europe. The etymology of the word Wandal comes from name of river Węda, Wenda /venda/ (today Wisła, Vistula). Wenda pronounced in the old Polish language with a nasal: wanda - ("water, fishing"), Baltic slavic: vandene ("water nymph") or vanduo ("water, wave"), Germanic: Wenedka (Lusatian, Slavic woman). Wanda is also an ancient Polish female name that is still being used today
Thanks for giving a out to Southern California punk rockers, The Vandals, at the end of the video. I've probably seen them 100 times in concert, even opening for Run DMC in May of 1999.
Thank you Simon for the video, it is RARE to see something about the Vandals/Alans other than the sack of Rome, which ironically happened (with slaughtering and enslaving) a few years earlier by the Visigoths. I am Tunisian, and they are part of our History and ancestors and most of all they are much more than an alleged looters. We were taught about them as part of our history but from a different (more fair) angle.
8:25 Geiserics fleet: Actually a large portion of the Roman fleet were stationed in Carthage, so the Vandals wouldn't have had to build ships, they got them for free. Perhaps they captured more when some years later they won a naval battle against the combined Roman fleet.
1:43 it has also been speculated, that they could have come from the northernmost part of Denmark called "Vendsyssel" ("Vandal-syssel"?). The neighbouring region (syssel) up there is called "Thy", probably from the Teutons, and the region just to the south is called "Himmerland" ("Cimbrer-land"?), probably named after the Cimbres. But without a time machine I guess we will never know for sure.
there diffently is a connection and most likely where they came from originally !! 2 years ago british dna research into the angle saxons found out that the saxons who came from northern germany were'nt german; but danish !! that came as quite a surprise to me. we already knew that the angles were from southern denmark.
@@finnhansen7171 That's interesting. I'm not surprised though. @@finnhansen7171 Thanks. Yes I was aware of those dogs, it's very fascinating. And I never believed the explanation of indians giving passing them on from one tribe to another hundreds of times all the way across the Americas. Some humans did the whole journey in one stretch bringing their dogs along. Such a journey would have been on water so there's every reason to believe the Norsemen did that journey themselves in their ships. The first time I was in Peru in 1990 in some museum I saw pre-Incan figurines that looked like Viking warriors, they were very similar to Viking age figurines we've found in Scandinavia. Vadals - Wędale, Wędy. A pre-Slavic kingdom. They generally had the same genetic makeup and cultural practices as pre-Christian Slavs. They're basically pre-Polish we have a set of well-developed writings about Wanda or Węda as part of our chronicles and a burial mound. We are the Vandals, not the krauts.
Actually, at 12:27 the video ended with a mention of them, which is awesome. Anytime I hear of something being discussed or taught about The Vandals in a history lesson or documentary, the Punk band pops into my brain too.
Yes. But surprisingly, Rome was sacked by the Visighoths a few years earlier (410 A.D), the population was slaughtered and many enslaved. That was not the case with Vandals, as per an "agreement", they did not kill or enslave the citizens of Rome !!! And yet "history" chose to immortalize sacking & looting with the Vandals. It really annoys me, since I am Tunisian, and they are part of our History and ancestors and most of all they are much more than an alleged looters.
@@daniellahouel3983 It's the fact that Vandal is an easy, two syllabel word so it's easier to remember than Visigoth, which is a mouthful. And looting wasn't what the Visigoths were best known for; it was enslaving and slaughter while Vandals.. vandalized Rome.
Some of this is questionable. Research suggests the Vandals were Slavonic, later known as the Wends, or Sorbs. The Wendish culture still remains today in Lusatia, Germany.
Does the German word van, also give us van, as in a moving van, mini-van and such? (This would of course mean moving van would be moving moving.) How did they use a German word if there was no Germany? So many unanswered questions.
