The witches in Salem were often educated, landowners, and/or materially wealthy. When the accused were hanged, their estates were cleverly distributed amongst the accusers, neighbors, or the officials of the court. I did a research project on it while getting my BA in History at the CofC. A few poor, a servant, and a child were hanged so the court would appear to have legitimate witnesses. Separation of church and state was argued based on the incident and wealthy and noteworthy politicians changed their surnames to disassociate themselves from relatives that participated in the ruse. For some nut job puritans it was legitimately hysteria but for most of the accusations there was economic, as well. There are other theories out there, but if you follow the wealth, history is easier to understand/theorize than religious excuses. Politicians use these tactics in modern American politics, as maneuvering using pathos is more effective than arguing for ethos or logos.

Back in the 1990s there was a couple that killed people and drank their blood, claiming they were vampires. They went on a killing spree across the US. At the time, a bunch of friends of mine were in a LARP where they pretended they were vampires. The local news had gotten a bunch of footage of them for a story that never happened. When the news heard about the vampire killings, they did a huge segment on it, using the footage of my friends to convince locals there were crazy vampire killers in their own community and this was what being goth led to. As you can imagine, my friends sued them for defamation.

Some kissing bugs in the US have tested positive for the parasite. I've been bitten by juvenile kissing bugs (not on the face) and even a small bite will cause a great deal of swelling. One was in my bedroom...they only come out at night so...it took a few nights to figure out what was causing all the bites overnight. The juvenile was only the size of a grain or rice...but full of my blood. Ugh!

Thank you. I waste a lot of time defending these bugs online. "most kissing bugs in the US are harmless" correct, and their bite wouldn't spread t.cruzi anyway, it's through their feces... There is a modern day kissing bug scare however. Started in the 00s when reports about Triatominae referred to them by family, instead of subfamily. as "Reduviidae" assassin bugs, like comparing a house cat to a tiger, thus including over 7,000 species in their sensational articles. I raise assassin bugs, 5 different species, most natives, not "hobby" bugs, though I raise those too. The kissing bug scare has depleted their numbers, a beneficial predator. The wheel bug (the largest of the new world assassin bugs) feeds on the brown marmorated stink bug, the spotted lanternfly and the japanese beetle all invasive species. If you simply google "wheel bug feeding" you will see it taking on a variety of crop pests. Highly beneficial.
I would love to see a video on the reduviidae, there is more than enough information there, it would be wildly entertaining, and possibly help remedy an environmental issue that is not really getting much attention. The Insect apocalypse as it's called, which is adversely affecting the predators and actually benefiting the pests at the moment., not to mention the disproportionate handicap against the reduviidae, as humans fear them thinking they are kissing bugs. Find them in the gardens doing them a favor and smash them. I've seen a lot of posts on ID groups claiming to have killed a kissing bug, and it's some poor wheel bug.
Not an entomologist, but I've been consulted by them. I have some video of my assassin bugs and there really isn't very much on the internet featuring these guys. It's a shame, they are amazing.

    • @brandonthorpe9905

One of the reasons ergot is an easy out for many an event is it has the highest concentration of lysergic acid to be found. Ergot is around 10% Hawaiian rosewood is around 7% and morning glories are around 3%. If lysergic acid sounds familiar it's just a short jump from lysergic acid diethyl amide, lysergic acid dietheline, or more commonly known as LSD. Though it is much more powerful when purified and bound to ammonia (amide) it is still a potent hallucinogen on it's own. Despite breaking down at around 80C. In addition the rye kernels that are infected by the parasite are 2-5 times larger than normal ones. Possibly being picked out as a higher/ lower quality grain. Then eaten by the farmers as product that could not go to market.

I used to think mass hysteria and paranoia was just something found in modern times, but then I had history class and realized humans are just weird. If I had to guess, over all the years humans have been around, those with excessive fear and paranoia probably lived longer and procreated more leading to such traits becoming fairly common. In modern times, you can quite easily manipulate these traits and you can see this daily on your "local" news media outlet.
