Crying isn't a weakness!!!!!!! It means you are Strong!!!!!!!!!!!!. I cried like a baby when I first heard this song. Probably because it was the first song I heard, the day my father died, less than a year ago.

The thing here is that James and his father are traditional tough military men. James was a British Army Captain who served in the Kosovo Intervention, where he helped prevent a gung-ho American general from attacking the Russians, which would have been disastrous.
I'm left-wing politically, but I have a soft spot for the old-fashioned British aristocracy, who always understood that being high up the social scale carried with it obligations to serve the entire people, and still surprisingly often serve as army officers.
The Blounts - that's the proper spelling, but it's still pronounced 'Blunt' - are a very ancient military family going back at least to the 1300s. James and his father have the traditional English 'stiff upper lip', but there is very genuine emotion behind it.

When I first heard this song, I didn't understand why reading about monsters was so important. Children are sometimes frightened about monsters and here the son is chasing them away instead of his father chasing them for his son. Love your reaction to this beautiful song - you weren't interrupting it every few minutes. Thank you.

I really appreciate your comments about James' breath control and voice and the clarity of every word and note. So far I've watched over a dozen of these "Monsters" reaction videos, and while everyone has been bowled over emotionally and surprised because usually they either haven't even heard of James Blunt or have only known him for "You're Beautiful," that's as far as they go. His command of every facet of every song he sings is incredible, and I am so glad so many people have become fans. His voice is one of a kind. His phrasing is unusual and completely right for every line. His songs all mean something. He has lived a full life, and it shows. I love all his songs, especially "I'll Take Everything."

When he filmed this his father ( that is his father) was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure and not expected to live. At the very end a distant cousin was found to be a match and donate a kidney, his father is doing well

To me the monsters are death, his father was terminally ill here.
The last verse was about his father's last breath, you will feel my hand on your arm, I'll be the last one so I'll leave the light on, don't be afraid its my turn to chase the monsters away...
    A beautiful song, beautifully sung...

James father had stage 4 kidney cancer and without a transplant he wasn’t going to survive. After James sung this song to his father a distant relative was a match so he received a new kidney and is doing really well now 😁 Every song James sings is powerful and raw emotion gets me every time I watch him 😭💔💔😭
