What I like about my hub-drive XP is that the motor engages by sensing the mere _motion_ of the pedals, but not the torque that I'm applying. As a result, in higher pedal assist levels (say 3 and above) I can get a good dose of power just by casually spinning the pedals without having to put any "oomph" into it. I like that. 😊

yes, the cadence sensors make the ride more effortless. I have both types of motors, it just kind of depends on the type of riding I feel like at the moment. My XC00 has a cadence sensor...bike is fun and fast.

Thank you for explaining the differences between a mid drive motor versus the hub motor. All who are considering buying this E-Bike or any mid drive Ebike, please test hub drive versus mid drive before purchasing. I tested a three or $4000 dollar mid drive Pedago and could not wait to get back home to my $1500 Rad City (hub drive). I have had many E-bikes but they were all hub drive and will continue to be.

That's really the best way, do test rides. It's definitely not for everyone. I have grown to love it but my wife hates it. Only suggestion would be for you to test a cadence mid drive. XPremium is a torque sensing mid drive. The cadence mid drives are more like hub drive but with a lot of power. I don't know who makes one but I converted one with (Bafang BBSHD) and it will go fast without me working too hard. Thank you for taking the time to comment...happy riding!

I had ordered this bike and I am so glad I canceled my order. If you are like me and you are older with knee issues or maybe not in the best of shape, you will have trouble peddling this bike. It is not like the XP 2.0 which you can just turn the hand throttle and go. It has a throttle but that throttle is different on this bike. It does not receive as much power as the XP 2.0. If you want power, you have to peddle and peddle hard like this video has so eloquently described it. The XPremium is a great bike but it is not for everyone. Great video with a great explanation of the differences. Thanks!

@ Photography, etc.: Yeah, I generally prefer an easy ride without too much effort, so this torque-sensing design would not be right for me. Here's what I wrote a few moments ago in a separate comment:

Hi great video, I have had my Xpreium since late August. I have 300 + miles now. it's a great bike. I can say from personal expense the following.
    1. had my 1st flat at 210 miles. The Slime they pre-installed did not work well at all. 15 miles away from home stranded.
    2. recommend getting a new set of tires, the tires that come with it are thin.
    3. Please Please Please Lectric provide a charger that can charge both batters at the same time. I have sent a request that they do this but more requests may make them take note.
    The Good parts.
    1. I agree, you have put some effort into getting up to high speeds. I love that about this bike effort not strain.
    2. It has excellent maneuverability, despite being so big. I find it great getting around off road.
    3. It has the best utility of use I can go to Aldi's get a week of food, go home and then go out with my younger friends on the off-road bike trails. and still have charge.

I agree with you. I had an XP that was stolen so I still have the charger. So I have two chargers so I am able to charge both batteries at the same time but I agree. it would be a lot more convenient if Lectric has a charger that has two charge cords.
I have over 1500 miles now on my XPremium and I have been lucky so far. But I will be putting in a "tannus armour" tire insert to prevent flats. I have them on my other ebikes and they have worked for me so far.

After a lot of research...I bought this sucker. The combination of torque sensor and mid drive makes driving it a dream...so responsive...smooth.
For a fat tire bike...this is the only way to go...if you actually are going to need the fat tire. If you stay on firm trails...meh.
I have access to miles of private trails...and pastures...some of it can be ...considered 'off road'.
If I put it into P2 and gear 2 ... I can literally walk the bike over any terrain...slow and stable...at a walking pace. 2.5 mph ... like a WW1 tank...it just rolls over everything...ruts...holes...anything...just cranks right through...smooth as silk.
This is where the hub motors fail miserably...
Hub bikes always market the top speed and watts...but for a fat bike...hub is not great at all...unless you can ride over smooth surfaces. Get into rough terrain...and the hub motor will get jerky at slow speeds. It won't feel as if you are riding a bicycle...you aren't actually...not really.
The mid drive solves that by linking power to the gear...and most importantly...to your foot pressure on the pedal.
Torque sensor is where it is at...not cadence sensors.
It also has a payload of like 330 lbs. It's as big a beast as you will need. I carry 50 lbs of photo gear with me...bike doesn't even notice it.
No way would I go over rough terrain with a hub motor with 30k of camera gear...but this bike...no worries...fast on the smooth trails...lock out the forks...zippy. Go off road...open the forks...get into low...and off you go...through just about anything.
For the price they sell this bike at...it's a bloody steal.

I agree, the mid drive puts in into a different class. On flat paved bike trails, the hub motors do just fine. So I can get it to 28 mph but it will make me work for it. If that is what you are looking for, then XPremium is good for you. Nice review, what about the throttle though? What is unclear is if the throttle allows for max current to 20mph? I have an XPremium arriving in a few days and other reviews suggested that the throttle will accelerate to 20mph. I do not plan on riding this hard but want the torque from the motor to assist me across a street or up to speed when I find it necessary. I understand that I am responsible for having the bike set up for this (be in a mid or lower gear & have the correct PAS setting selected). I owned a big bad 750/1100w hub drive and was always hard into the throttle, it was fun until I started burning stuff up and I believe that virtually all $1000-$2000 hub drive bikes are optimized for a rider who is 180lbs or less who actually pedals a hub drive bike. I weigh over 250LBS and think that this will be a better fit for longevity because the torque sensor and gearing allow for optimization of power to the rear wheel. One thing I appreciate is the Class II eBike sticker, lots of laws are in the books now stating that this sticker must be in place and I will be in compliance with local law.

    • @tai.randomthings
      @tai.randomthings  Рік тому

Yes, the trottle will ramp you up to 20 mph but it's more gradual compared to a hub drive. However, because of Class 2 requirements, it will not go faster than 20 mph on throttle only, even if you unlock it. The torque sensor will give you a "real bike" feel but you do need to do little more regular maintenance than a hub drive. Happy riding!

  • @Waltkat

I've tried both mid drive and hub drive bikes and currently own a mid drive mountain bike because hub drive is useless for hills and for people who actually want to ride an ebike for both the enjoyment and exercise. I rode a hub drive Super 73 and hated it. Couldn't climb most of the hills around here and when you do peddle to get up a hill, it's a pain in arse because the ergonomics are all wrong. The particular Super 73 that I rode had a 7 speed rear derailleur but as with all hub drives, did nothing to help the motor get up a hill. The power response on hub motor bikes is also hurky jerky and not very smooth. My mid drive, on the other hand, make use of the front and rear gearing and the torque sensor makes power delivery nice and smooth. The ergonomics of my bike is normal bicycle ergonomics so peddling is a pleasure and allows me to go up hills that I'd have to push the Super 73 up even though the Super 73 motor is rated for twice the Watts as my mid drive.
I've been looking for a foldable mid drive bike but the cheapest one I could find was around $4,500, about $1,000 more than my mountain bike. This Lectric Premium pushes most of the right buttons for me so I'll seriously look into buying one. I only wish it had a bigger front brake rotor to handle the weight, better quality derailleur, nicer grips and seat. But I understand why they chose the cheaper components in order to keep the price so low at $1,600. I just wonder if the 1000W Bafang mid drive can bolt in place of the stock 500W drive...

I totally get what you are saying...I have a friend that has super and it's so uncomfortable in my opinion. The hub drive vs torque sensing mid drive are historically two completely different worlds but this bike does try to bridge it at an affordable price. I did take this bike on a green level mountain trail to see how it will handle climbing and it did decent. I have a video on that if you are still interested in the research. The other thing is you could pick up this bike second hand around $1100 and it may be worth a try. Happy riding!

I took it back and got the Hollywood Sport Rack that is rated for 80lbs per bike, 60 inch wheelbase and up to 5 inch wide tires. It is a beast of a rack and was $200 cheaper than the Destination E. I did need to buy a couple add on top bars for the clamps to ride on and those were $40 each. The wheels sit down in cradles and there are included adaptors for 20 inch wheels to keep the derailleur clear of the cradle. Do NOT buy the Destination E for the XPremium! I know it comes with a ramp included but I have no problem loading our bikes by holding the rear brake and popping the front up in a wheelie and dropping it in the cradle then lift the rear up. I'm 66 and do it no problem.

    • @tai.randomthings
      @tai.randomthings  11 місяців тому

I shift the gears like a car. As I approach a stop light, I will change the gear to either 2nd or 3rd. If it's an incline, I will go all the way to 1st. After I start up and get monentum, I will then upshift to 4th, then 5th if it's pretty flat. If you start on 7th gear and stay there all the time, chances are you have worn out the freewheel, that's why it's slipping on you. Good news is if you use a different gear that you typically don't use, you probably won't get the slipping as bad. If I'm just riding around and don't want to worry about shifting, then I would keep it in 2nd or 3rd gear. But that won't get you very fast. Sorry for the long answer and hope it helps. An easier alternative would be to remove the controller plug, which may be harder to figure out. Lastly, I saw someone with removable pedals. Check your state and local laws before you set your bike to class three. Because some laws do not allow class three bikes on multi use trails or roads. And experiment with your PAS and gear settings. PAS 3 and gear 3 has always worked fine for me starting off. And you want to be able to use you throttle to start off if you are on a hill or off road or on gravel. So you get some forward travel before you have to peddle. And if you need to shift gears. Tap lightly on either brake lever and it will shut power to your motor immediately so you can shift. And not lose momentum like waiting for your sensors to shut power to the motor. It is like using a clutch on a sports car. It may take some practice to get the feel without engaging the brakes any. I have been riding mid drives since 2002 with thousands of miles. This bike is underpowered from what I am used too. But at 70 maybe it is time to slow down a little.

I would not recommend XPremium for you. XPremium heavy and it meant to assist your pedaling. It's not worth the money if you are looking for an ebike that will essentially pedal for you. Based on what you describe on how you want to ride (slowish and basically motor only), I would say "XP Lite", which goes around 16 mph but it's very easy to ride. The big negative about the XP Lite is ride distance. If you want distance, then XP 3.0, maybe even with the long range battery. Hope this helps.

Where are you at, maybe someone would be willing to buy it from you since it's practically new. However, the warranty on the XP is non-transferrable so aftermarket buyers would likely expect some discount to take on that risk.

From the picture, it looks the same as the 2.0, which is a sitting straight up angle that a lot of people like. I believe it's how the torqure is applied. In a hub drive, the torque is transferred to the wheel through the spokes so there are some limitation in how much energy can be transferred. The mid drive transfers the power through the chain so it's able to deliver more torque. At least this is what I beleive is happening.
