I'm a Canadian and I loooooooove Asterix and Obelix! I have a number of the books in the reprinted hard covers, a few of the movies and Asterix and Obelix figurines. I grew up reading them in 1978 or there abouts and have never looked back....so to speak! The art is amazing, the depiction of ancient times is wonderfully done, though satirical and the wonderful cast of our favorite heroes and their Gallic friends and family is a joy to read about. Everything is so beautifully done and it's not only a European treasure, but a world wide phenomenon. Cheers!
Hi, nice video, I'm Greek and in my country the Asterix comic books are super popular since the late sixties, many various translations, even in Ancient Greek and several local dialects. We simply adore French-Belgian comics like Asterix, Tintin, Lucky Luke and we are seriously obsessed with Disney comic books since like forever especially the ones made by Italian and American creators. I think you will like Corto Maltese..
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, the situation is similar here in The Czech Republic. I have heard very good things about Corto Maltese, I shall check it out! Thanks for the recommendation.
Thorgal is one of my favourites. Van Hamme and the artwork from Rosinski is just perfect for me. Van Hammes' other work like "XIII" and "Largo Winch" are also good. And I also recomend his one shots: "Le Grand Pouvoir du Chninkel " (good luck finding a good translation that isn't dutch tough) and "Western". The other thing I hightly recommend is "Blacksad". If you can find "Murena" , that's also something that is worth your time.
I'm 47 years old and Astérix remains my favorite comic book character along with Tintin. My favorite albums are "La Zizanie" and "Astérix légionnaire", which are both hilarious. Astérix is very popular in Québec where I live. Since we're a French-speaking nation surrounded by English-speakers, we often consider Québec as our "village gaulois", our gaulish town, in reference to Astérix. The name of the magazine you were talking about is "Pilote". From 1969 to 1989, it published a lot of famous French and Belgian comics like Barbe-Rouge (a pirate often parodied in Astérix), Blueberry, Lucky Luke, Valérian, Achille Talon, les Dingodossiers, etc.
Nice informative history there. I think the comic in which Asterix first appeared in 1959 was called "Pilote". Thanks to this video, I now know that "Sidliste Bohu" is Czech for "The Mansions Of The Gods", which just happened to be the first Asterix adventure I ever read. I can also tell you that the name of the Gaulish druid wasn't Panoramix in the English versions, but rather Getafix. I happen to be a fan of these Belgian-French comics, and although I can recommend Corto Maltese, there's also the likes of Valerian, Blake & Mortimer, Blueberry, Lucky Luke, The Smurfs and Tintin worth considering as well. There is a British publisher called Cinebook that specialises in European graphic novels - if there is a Czech subsidiary, I strongly recommend checking them out.
You are very lucky then. I know US comics are getting more and more into the independent sphere, but still... I would recommend Asterix and Moomins to everybody. Definitely underrated comics in most of the world.

Not just Ancient Greek, there is also Asterix in Latin.

I am Dutch, and I nearly got all Asterix albums. In the “race round the boot” they called the antagonist/Roman racer ‘Coronavirus’
Awesome! I don't think I have read that one. Thanks for the recommendation, I shall order the book immediately :D

Asterix is set in 50 BC, in the time just after the Gallic Wars, with Caesar being the main antagonist.

Hey there! Thanks for an exceptionally informative comment! These are very rare. I didn't know about the Panoramix name change. Interesting, indeed.
I wish we got those hardcover collections in my country! (Poland)
Tak, są fajne, ale jak byłem ostatnim razem w Polsce, to widziałem wspaniale tomy Marvel i DC. Lepsze niż w Czechach :)
Something tells me you'd love Corto Maltese!
Oh yes, that has been on my reading list for quite some time!
Nice accent, dude! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I appreciate it! I will do my best.
I’ve only got into asterix comic books thanks to my boss who is a Frenchmen. It is a pity it is not well known in the US
