A TRIBUTE TO VINCE CHARLES - STEEL DRUM VIRTUOSO
💖Someone is chopping onions! I'm in tears! This is stunning! Vince would have loved this... Wow! The memories when I watched this came flooding back. The man is missed... its been 22 years this year since the music stopped. The void can never be filled.
Bless you for putting this together, the love and appreciation for Vince is evident. Vince might not be of this earth anymore but he hasn't left any of us. I look forward to showing this to lil bebe Kimo when he gets older! Thank you SO much. XXXX Rachel Charles 💞 (February 2023).
"Vince Charles was one of the most joyful, loving guys who gave everything to his music and everything to the people that he met. I can only hope that some of him, rubbed off on us. We'd like to do this song for you in his memory." - ND
This video upload is an update to a video I uploaded 9 years ago. Besides being in the 4:3 (square screen) instead of the 16:9 (wide screen) aspect ratio, back then I lacked the skills and finesse This one's for keeps...
The response I received from Rachel Charles, Vince's widow, to my initial effort moved me.
    Her response back then -
"A moving tribute to my husband Vince. It's the first time I have seen this video... It made me cry. Thanks for keeping Vince in your thoughts and for keeping his 'beautiful noise' alive." - Rachel Charles (March 2014). 💖
With Rachel's permission, I decided on this update.
Born in St. Kitts and reared in the Virgin Islands, Vince Charles performed in the Caribbean Pavilion at the New York World's Fair in 1964-65. Then, after playing at Canada's Montreal Expo '67, he moved to Los Angeles, where he became a studio musician.
First asked to work with Diamond on 'Reggae Strut' for the 1974 album 'Serenade', Vince Charles joined Neil's band full-time in 1976. Prior to hooking up with Neil, Vince was an accomplished studio musician. He has also worked with Herb Alpert (Tijuana Brass), The Beach Boys and many others during the course of his career.
Vince has put out two albums of his own music; the latest of which is entitled 'Soliloquy' and he often puts together a band in LA when he has time off from the Diamond tour. Sadly, Vince passed away on June 3, 2001.
Captain Sunshine is from Neil Diamond's 'Moods' album (1972). Neil Diamond and his band performed this live version in December 27, 2002 as a tribute to Vince, a treasured and much loved member of the Neil Diamond Band.
    CAPTAIN SUNSHINE (Moods: 1972 - Age: 31)
    NEIL DIAMOND
This Live Version: December 27, 2002
    Captain Sunshine
    Make me drink wine
    Make me feel fine
    When I'm feelin' wrongly down
    He don't take much
    He don't make much
But ah, to be such a man as he
    And walk so pure
Between the earth and the sea
    Captain Sunshine
    He do me fine
    Make the words rhyme
When he knows the tune is sad
    He don't take much
    He don't make much
But ah, to be such a man as he
    And walk so pure
Between the earth and the sea
    (instrumental)
    He don't take much
    He don't make much
But ah, to be such a man as he
    And walk so pure
Between the earth and the sea
    Captain Sunshine
    Captain Sunshine
And we will always remember you my friend...

This revised video of Neil Diamond Central's "Captain Sunshine" - A Tribute to Vince Charles is a remarkable improvement in the pre-digital photographs that Doug tirelessly spent in updating the clarity and in the editing of images logging in over 80 hours of his time in a week.
0:23 - Vince Charles's partial credits indicate only some of the venues and highlights of his 54 years culminating over 25 years with Neil's band until his unexpected death on June 3, 2001. 0:49 - The distinct joyful sound of a steel drum being played. 0:53 - 1:05. Three air travel maps that Vince Charles journeyed prior to joining Neil's band; Map of St. Kitts to the U.S. Virgin Islands (15 hours, 55 minutes), U.S. Virgin Islands to New York City (4 hours, 10 minutes), New York to Montreal, Canada (1 hour, 25 minutes), and New York to Los Angeles, California (6 hours, 25 minutes). 1:17 - 2:01 - Live version of December 27, 2002 concert: Neil's voices he speaks to the audience prior to the dedication of this song to Vince Charles. 2:06 - "Captain Sunshine" - the song begins. 2:10 - "Make me drink wine" - Vince's photo with steel drum. 2:14 - Dual photos with Vince on the left and Neil to the right, sitting alone at a table with a rose and a glass of wine next to a corked bottle. 2:23 - "Make me feel fine when I'm feeling wrongly down." - Vince's photo was taken on the airplane. 2:29 - "He don't take much" - Vince on the airplane wearing a sweatshirt. 2:37 - "He don't make much" - Vince on percussions (music chimes and drums. 2:44 "But I'll ought to be such a man as he" - Vince and shiny steel drum overshadows an image of an empty concert hall. 2:50 - "And walks so pure between the earth and sea" - Image 32 is amazing. Here indicates a man walking along the beach amongst a cloud-filled blue sky and so artfully done is the sand and the sea intermingling and reflecting the clouds, resulting in what appears to be a man walking in the clouds. 3:00 - Image 34 - Another well-planned photograph of Vince and his percussion instruments that took hours to edit and portray especially in the chimes and washboard. It required Doug to remove grey background color with much patience and accuracy. The photo of Vince and the inserted musical instruments overshadows an image of Neil singing on stage. 3:21 - 4:35 - Image 36 - 50 - Repeat of chorus. 3:58 - 4:02 - Image 46 - Neil speaks, " Yeah Vincent, just want to let you know my friend, that the men and I, we miss you something awful.". 4:55 - "Captain Sunshine" (3X) - Neil speaks, And we will always remember you, my friend." - Image 53 of Vince and Neil. 5:06 - Image 55 - Young Vince with his wife, Rachel Charles. 5:15 - Image 56 - A celebration with Vince and daughter (she in a white dress and Vince in a gold jacket). 5:21 - Image 57 - Young Vince and daughter as a child. 5:33 - Instrumental - Image 58 - Los Angeles Times archive dated June 12, 2001 with an article on the passing of Vince Charles. Image 59 - A photo of Neil with his band and named, "Diamondville" with Vince front and center. 5:38 - Image 60 - A fictional map of Diamondville. 5:59 - 6:39 - Image 62 - Rachel Charles pens her fondest memories of Vince. 6:40 - Image 63 - Vince waves goodbye. 6:43 - 6:56 - RIP Vince Charles (1947 - 2001) Red rose in corner. 6:49 - Image 64 - Various sized computer-aided white twinkling stars moving across the screen and ending at 6:55 in darkness. ✨

Thanks once again for your brilliant and painstaking effort Donita; no small feat, much appreciated. You have left no stone unturned. Your summery of this video and song is a useful guide to viewers to full comprehend them.
Having responded to a viewer's comment on the previous video version of this song that I made some 9 years ago left me thinking and feeling that with my somewhat limited experience and level of skill back then, that I simply had to do an update on that video. I contacted Rachel Charles seeking her permission do an update. In addition, I asked her if she would be prepared to any additional images that she would have. Grateful that Rachel was most kind to not only give me her blessing for an updated video, but also supplied me with a couple of photographs for inclusion in the video. They are - 4:57, 5:05 and 5:11. This is definitely my final video tribute to Vince Charles.

I saw Neil over 20 times. 18 with Vince.
Neil treated his band with upmost respect.
Had he still been on the road, Neil would have showed a unique and individually designed homage' to Ron Tutt. His long time drummer. Who graced the stage with Elvis Presley's TCB band and Roy Orbison's Black and White Night show.
    Neill,
THANK YOU. For teaching me to be a better band leader and singer/songwriter

I love that Vince worked with Herb Alpert! I was a trumpet player myself but haven't played for over a decade now. I love how ND spoke so warmly about his drummer. What a loss he left. This is a great song, I think I loved every song on the Serenade album.

    I remember this beautiful song.
Neil Diamond always sung from his heart..
Songs like Play Me, Morning side, Suzanne, Canta Libre, stones, shilo, husbands & wives, Brooklyn roads - straight from the core of his heart with such intensity.
Fell in love with this mesmerizing voice and brooding eyes 45 years ago a teenager in the early 70's.
    What a singer!

Thanks for your comment Leslie. I need to highlight the fact that Neil actually wrote this song back in 1972 (his 'Moods' album). However, when Vince Charles passed away in 2001, Neil and the members of his band decided to dedicate this song to him, for Vince truly was Captain Sunshine.

Thanks to NEIL DIAMOND CENTRAL for the answer. Sorry! I thought that song was written for Vince Charles. I can write easily in english but it's more difficult sometimes to understand when people talk. So, I didn't understand all the explanation by Neil Diamond about that song and the story. I'm french. I discovered his music just a few months ago. I knew a few songs that my mother listened to a long time ago and even after a few years but I wasn't born at that time. One day, I heard " Brooklyn roads " and I loved, loved that song. I decided after that to discover the creations of Neil Diamond. Since then I listen little by little all the albums but I dont know everything about Neil Diamond like so many people do. I'm focus on his way to write, the lyrics of his songs. I love the texts so much! A delicious voice, wonderful lyrics and sublime music. Just love that exceptional artist ...

Vince Charles was obviously a very beloved team member of Neil's seemingly very tightly knit band. He treated them all with such admirable respect and they all seemed to adore him. Is it any surprise that the result on stage was always so mind blowing. I am positive that when Neil sees this beautiful tribute to Vince, he will be very very moved.

Indeed! And I have first hand reports of Neil's kindness, generosity, loyalty, love and respect for his band. I believe Neil is pretty unique in that he and his band were employees of the organisation; on a salary. Band members knew that being employed by Neil Diamond meant a steady/long lasting employment, not engaged on only on an as required basis... for studio recordings or live performances/tours.

@@NeilDiamondCentral - Hi Doug, so wonderful to hear back from you! You have "first hand reports of Neils' kindness...etc." - aren't you a lucky guy? :). To have first hand anything of Neil must feel so special. But yes, I have also read about the relationship between his band members and himself - of how it was more like a family. Even one of the wives having a baby enroute and that baby becoming everyone's joy and pleasure in subsequent road trips. Sounds so nostalgic - and fun!! A happy time.
You know, I just feel like adding something more. Even without the fortune of ever being anywhere around this great singer/songwriter/musician (with a unique personality:), I just KNEW that he would be someone good from the inside. And I knew that the very moment I saw his face for the first time on the cover of the "12 Greatest Hits" album so many years ago (when I was just 17) - months after I had first heard his voice on the radio (and was, I have to admit, smitten by that already :). Oh it's such a long story........and it certainly feels good to have that belief in his innate goodness corroborated by someone like yourself who is in a position to vouch for it. I am grateful to you for bringing Neil somewhat closer to us. Thank you!🙏

Hi Nas, Thanks for your kind words, much appreciated. Having been an unwavering, driven fan since 1971, I have been able to glean stories that have assisted me in gaining an insight into the man and his music. Having this channel and the website has provided me with the means, a channel for individuals with personal one-to-one contact with Neil and his band to contact me with bits of illumining facts. A few here who provided me with their permission to post - www.neildiamondcentral.com/treasured-memories
Neil once stated, "If you _know_ my music... you _know_ me."
After an albeit brief stint as a member of a Neil Diamond fan club, I decided to leave. I discovered that members frequently engaged in navel gazing, assumptions, opinions which then generated to “discussions” and later seem to evolve into “facts” for all and sundry to feast/gouge upon. Being a person who steadfastly adheres to the facts, remaining a member of such clubs wasn’t my fit.
Your reference to “one of the wives", that was Linda Press (back-up singer), wife of Reinie Press (bass singer). When she discovered that she was pregnant, she dreaded having to broach the “problem” with Neil, fearing that he would dump her. When she did, she received a pleasant surprise as Neil responded along the lines of… “We are a family; your baby will be part of our family.” As such, baby Daisy became a roadie… from the day she was born. Daisy is an accomplished singer herself today. You can Google her. Take care.

Hi Doug, thanks for the story. This is one story among a few others I did know about, as also about Daisy and that she grew up to become a singer/performer. Just didn't want to show that knowledge in a comment on your post - as it is for YOU to bring us the stories here in your own channel. As you have rightly done - as always with accuracy.
As far as Linda P is concerned....well, without going so far as to use the word "jealous" (I just am not prone to feeling this thing of anyone at all), I still have to say that back in 1996, I badly wanted to have the opportunity Linda had when I saw her on stage with Neil (she wore a bright green dress and with her flaming reddish orange hair of that time, she looked very striking). She sang YDBMF with him. I was wishing that could be me, LOL! (as they say😁).
I think I have shared a piece of writing about this previously, you may not remember it as it isn't significant as far as ND is concerned.
Well, all I now wish for is no longer to sing any song on stage but just as all his fans wish including yourself I am sure - just that Neil
should stay well and healthy for a long time🙏🏼

Thanks Nas. Am aware that you're a True Believer. Did suspect that you might be aware of Linda's story. Guess she got the job because, as Neil put it, "She has the voice of an angel." Done and dusted.

A wonderful tribute to Vince. He was such a lovely man. It was always very nice to have a drink with him and have a talk with him. Those are great memories. I'll keep them with me in my heart.

With Marijke Hogenstijn, no doubt. Yet another amazing Neil Diamond fan. Sadly, I lost contact with her since I left Twitter. She and I shared pretty much the same views as she often "Liked" my tweets. Take care.
