That could be a fitting end to the project - I would even pitch the best ending is a complete reversal of roles - John beating his old rival and known most for a scientific first struggle, and Hank writes a book as or even more successful than tFiOS and known most for his writing. And thus the 20something year process is complete

I used to watch Community Channel years ago. Great stuff but Natalie left the platform and I haven’t followed her other work. Great stuff though.
As far as the Green Brothers, they are like my favorite ball player, Salvador Perez. Not on the best team except for a few years. He set a few records, but that’s not the similarity or why I find him important. He’s the heart of the team. I see him as the happiest soul of the Royals. I enjoy watching someone who loves what they do as much as he does. I see the same in you two.
Work as long as you want. I will keep watching as I can.

Let’s keep in mind there are lots of ways to “retire” it does not have to be all at once or final, it can be a sabbatical, a break, a long vacation, finishing a project, goal or mission and moving onto something else, it can also be going part-time or doing things sporadically, as long as people are allowed options than only age/health/death can cause actual retirement. 💜

We live in a world that has brought most of us up to believe that "The End" is a really bad and scary thing (we even fear change) when it would actually benefit it us in so many more ways to learn to appreciate and to even celebrate the end of something, and to look forward to the next up-and-coming thing. It's certainly okay to be sad when that event happens, but it shouldn't distract from a potentially new fun thing to focus on.
I never watched Scott's stuff, but I did see his final video, and gave a mental toast to his accomplishment. I wish him the best in whatever his next adventure might be.

  • @jeffreyshort4531

With Tom Scott - there are two things that stood out for me
    1) He had been preparing his audience for about a year. He know when it was time... and he let the audience in on the secret (and even some preparation on requesting certain things to look at)
    2) That ending... Yes, maybe you can say it was a bit cheezy, but to go out while hanging off of an helicopter (after just saying that was one thing he hadn't done).

I got the same sense as John did. He finished the project. Tom Scott has done a bunch of different internet projects. He was one of its founding creators. This 10-year UA-cam project was one of them, and it was a great one.
Tom was also entirely right when he said he’d skipped the cheesiness for a full decade, so he was more than justified in indulging just this once.

"Second string offensive linemen who are kind of personality hires" is such a good metaphor. Vlogbrothers has never been close to being the biggest star on UA-cam, but you are almost universally respected. Star quarterbacks get a lot of attention, but they also get a lot of haters, whereas almost nobody hates on offensive linemen. In my experience, they have some of the warmest personalities of any football players, and everyone cheers when they get to have their moment in the spotlight.

I've always seen Vlogbrothers as a series of projects undertaken by you, Hank, and/or Nerdfighteria at large. You and Hank completed that first year of videos. Hank created VidCon. You both wrote excellent books. Each year's Project for Awesome is a project. Each year's Pizzamas. Even the sillier, smaller ones, like when Nerdfighters submitted their own happy dances for one of Hank's videos 87 years ago. Etc.
Will the UA-cam videos end? Will you and Hank eventually retire? Yeah, for sure. But the silly and artistic and world-changing projects under the Vlogbrothers/Nerdfighteria umbrella have the potential to continue for a long, long time, because that is the kind of community you've cultivated, and I'm very happy for that.

I believe that the future of UA-cam holds endless possibilities, especially with the advent of AI technology. Channels may never truly ‘end’ - instead, they might evolve. Imagine a scenario where UA-cam harnesses AI to automatically generate new content, drawing inspiration from a channel’s existing video archive. The more videos a creator has produced and archived, the richer and more diverse the AI-generated content could be. This could lead to some channels becoming perpetual, their legacy living on indefinitely through AI-crafted videos. Isn’t it fascinating to envision a platform where content creation is limitless and continually evolving?

One of the biggest lessons I have come to understand about life in recent years is that it's completely fine to not know how things will turn out and to not attach my sense of fulfillment and worth to expected outcomes. What's important is to appreciate the present moment and the journey. All things change, things end, and new experiences arise always. I think there is beauty in that.

Its hard to think about that going away, but at the same time i know those moments will still be there. When I had my first child 4 years ago i went back and watched so many of those early videos with Henry as a baby and I took so much encouragement from seeing John as a first time father. My channel has lost most of it's audience as they age out to something else, or my channel hasn't changed to the new Mr Beast style to draw in new viewers. In fact, if that was my only income, I would have been forced to quit 4 years ago, as the channel is just slowoly doing worse and worse. UA-cam would have me think it was my fault, but it's not. No matter what storage medium you choose, there’s no guarantee that the other pieces needed to retrieve and interpret that data will continue to exist. I say this as someone who looked very forward to undergraduate studies ending, unlike a lot of my peers who are nostalgic, and then also unlike my peers decided to go back to the same school for a graduate program. But also as someone who had been laid off, fired, and decided to quit a job because of my panic attacks after graduating, having the "your leaving means your time was a success" is therapeutic, like retraining my brain to rethink what's a success and what's failure.

Vlogbrothers is not a show! You are not a competitor - neither of you has been as detached from your fans as shows and competitors are. As you've said many times, this is more than entertainment - this is a community. The question isn't how this show ends; it's how this **community** ends. I've always been a sucker for ride-or-die communities, so I personally think death is the only way to go.
Then again, above all, I and this community truly want ya'll to do what's best for your families. And if that's retiring, we'll support it. With how much ya'll have added to our lives, it's the very least we can do. But there's no way around the fact that it will be a loss. I don't think there's a pretty bow at the end of such a wonderful, powerful community. There's loss and, hopefully, gratitude for what was.

If anything I could see the editing and uploading becoming tedious, but vlogbrothers becoming a 1 minute vlog filmed and uploaded from an Iphone would retain 95% of the value for me. You have another possible ending: your time in the project is over. Like the game, vlogbrothers may, perhaps, outlast your time with it. It may tell you that you are done playing, but go on being played. I do not mean to say it will be the same without you, or that you should start looking for another two people to hand vlogbrothers over to, or anything of the sort. But you might consider the possibility. I don't think that's how vlogbrothers will end, and I don't think I specifically want it to be, either, but I do think that there will always be a place for *a* vlogbrothers, even if you two aren't *the* vlogbrothers. I hope whatever answer you settle on you're happy with, because I trust that if you're satisfied with your answer, it's the right one. Don't decline to consider any possible answers, don't pick one after consideration you don't think is right. I agree, everything we make should end, and it should have the right ending. Endings are the most important start of the story, I think, right up there with the beginning. You've already had such a great journey, and when the time approaches I look forward to the inevitable end of your vlogbrothers, because, as long as you trust the ending, it will be among the best endings to nearly anything in life. Happy Tuesday.

You know know i was actually thinking about how for a lot of UA-camrs UA-cam is more like a "step into" something else. Which is fine, but UA-camrs like you guys do this cause well... You like doing it. And i think that is really cool and there should be people like that in the platform

I don’t want this, or many other games, to ever end but I know & accept that there will be a time when they do. All I can hope is that I’ll be ready for it as well.

The west wing was 7 seasons! It also remains my favorite show ever.

listen if you need to stop that's ok, but please just rip off the bandaid/put our minds at ease by telling us at the TOP of the video whether or not you're quitting. terrifying us for 4 minutes 2 videos in a row just feels really shitty and like a cruel trick to get more views.
