It might not be clear why I feel weird about this video because I'm of course really inside my head about all of this, but I want to be a person who gets excited just about making life better for staff and customers and clients and that's just always enough for me.
Sometimes it is, for sure! And I don't want people to think I've been miserable doing this work. But I have found that I am, to some extent, who I am. There are things I can do and of course I am extremely grateful to have the opportunities I have. But when I definitely had enough and was still working really hard and feeling very stressed, I could tell that I needed new motivations.
One motivation is wanting to do things that are very interesting and special for this community, which is why John suggesting we work with Partners in Health in a big and long-term way was so exciting (honestly, in part because it felt quite risky!)
The thing I wish was different about me is that I wish having or not having money did not affect my motivation as much as it did. I thought it wouldn't, but I was wrong. I was much more motivated by making money up to a certain point than I thought I was, and when that motivation went away, I was upset that I had such a need to find new ways to motivate myself to do hard things.
I don't think I said it enough in this video, but I feel (aside from some frankly unnecessary challenges with my body) pretty certain that I am one of the luckiest people on the whole earth, and that's not hyperbole, I think it's simply true.

I've watched hundreds of hours of P4A, and it's always been clear between the lines that you and John play a strong role in the matching funds for example.

I was just like, "...because I don't need it, and these other people do?" Of course, now at my new job I'm living paycheck to paycheck and can't afford charity anymore, which breaks my heart, but it's super wholesome to know that there are some people, like John and Hank, who understand that the utility curve of money does, in fact, flatten, and other people are to the left of that curve who could use the help making it over that hump.

I found this channel in March/April of 2007, I was 15. And as the community grew, this is the kind of stuff that always got me excited. It's meaningful, it's important, it's different. It's so cool to finally be an adult who can purchase things from these and send money during fundraisers. Growing up alongside this project I think shaped my ambitions or maybe rather made me feel less alone in my ambitions. And being able to contribute to these projects and projects likes these has motivated me more than abstract amounts of money over the years. Which is all just to say, I'm sure this work has been extremely difficult over the years, but the impact you both have had is deep. So excited to see this project grow!

YES and there is a tiny gremlin in my brain that says "come on, why aren't you doing big rad things to change the world for the better like this guy?" But then reason kicks in and I remember that I bought some soap, I give what I can and that is something and for now it's enough. It is cool that I grew up with these guys as an example and 15 years later I'm able to contribute in small ways. Plus I'm probably a better person because of them. Wow.

My wife is an mechanical engineer with a PhD researching soft robotics, she is BRILLIANT. She has done amazing work in developing standards to make robots safer. However, at some point when a project scales up she gets out of her skill set and out of her depth trying to run it. That's when people like me step in as project managers and above me, program managers, and above that the c-suite. It is not my wife's failure, it is her success that she knows when it's time to hand off responsibility to those who are suited for the task so that she can do what she does best. Take this as a lesson learned. You burned a little too hard, as did my wife when she learned this lesson. Take a step back. Rest. Recover. You have more ahead of you.

However the climate emergency is a serious issue for me and recently I’ve been less inclined to joining your new subscriptions because of the ‘food miles’ to consider having these products shipped to Australia. Maybe because it was the switch from "we are building a thing, this is amazing" to feeling " I'm only doing this out of obligation" and he had to wrestle with his own emotions.
There are time in our lives when we are going through and doing the things because it is what's expected of us and while people around us appreciate it, their feelings may be hurt to find out it was out of obligation.
I have completely been in charge out of obligation. I was depressed and resentful. OTHERS remember that time as normal or look back on it fondly. They'd be upset to read my journal from that time.
Situations are different but I understand. Like the saying of "we judge others by their actions and ourselves by our intentions", but you peel back the curtain and share your intentions.

The scary thing for me is that the bigger a company gets, the bigger its' (honest) mistakes are. For example, I worked with someone from a certain outdoor clothing company trying to do something similar -- they give away a tremendous amount of money, but she confided that she worried sometimes it was all cancelled out by the amount of plastic clothes they produce. As scales of production increase, so does inefficiency and your impact on the planet.

So that it's not just about where the profit goes, it's also about doing good the whole way through.
It's really hard to achieve that within modern capitalism, so keep making this kind of comment! We keep reminding, they'll keep improving.

Even though I'm an adult and I know not to trust social media 100%, I still often feel like everyone else knows what they are doing and that they are living life and going somewhere - and meanwhile I'm lost and stuck in place. So when people like you Hank, who are successful and frankly very impressive in so many ways, openly admit to having at least somewhat similar feelings as I do... It's so relieving. Because it proves that you don't have to be perfect and have everything under control in order to succeed and do well. And that is something I think a lot of us need to hear.

You’re an idol for nearly everyone who continues to stick with you. You are real with us and real with yourself at the same time and that builds endless respect through trust. I wouldn’t care if you changed your entire life’s perspectives, trajectories, or goals if you were real with yourself and real with us about it. Disappointment from my selfish expectations would never outweigh my love, respect, or care for you.

Man, I needed this video today. I've recently started my own business - or rather, been trying to turn a longstanding freelance gig into a full-fledged company - and it has been a so far short but winding road of doubt, stress, sleeplessness, and the overwhelming feeling I don't know WTF I'm doing and it'd all be better if someone smarter/cooler/less-like-me was doing it. I've been a part of this community for over a decade and can map many of my own aspirations and life turns directly onto the inspiration Hank and John have given through their own journeys low these many years. When you look up to someone like that, it's easy to imagine they're just born to do it, or naturally better at it than you are, or whatever. So Hank's humility and openness here wasn't just refreshing, it was important. At least for me. Thanks, Hank.

I think SO highly of you for doing stuff for other people even though it’s hard. You’re one of the most selfless people on earth. I wasn’t expecting it but I starting crying uncontrollably in the middle of the video because you started talking about not being motivated to do stuff and feeling guilty about it. My sister calls me selfish all the time and I struggle with that because I’m not sure if what I am is selfish but even if I am there’s nothing I can do about it. I don’ want to live. I find it incredibly hard to keep living. My sister tells me I don’t do anything for other people. She recently said “you don’t care about other people, you don’t recommend something to do for someone’s birthday, you’re not interested in others’ lives” and yes that’s true but I don’t have the energy to do so. I’m not even motivated to do anything for my birthday which is in 2 days, I don’t enjoy being alive anymore so everything Hank does is unbelievable to me. Hank I hope you’re really proud of yourself because I’m so proud of you and I hope you reach your goals

By the time I clicked on it it had already been taken down and given the title I was worried that Hank had uploaded something controversial/bad 😂

Not very many people have it in them to create something for someone else without having personal gains. You and your teams are one of the rare ones

I think we’re in the “exact polar opposite of the All Star Vlogbrothers titles era” era.
