I fucked up chasing a good score on the ASVAB for Intelligence knowing I wasn't that bright and I only went for MI because I thought they were the special forces types from watching fucking movies. The whole time I scored Infantry and thought they were the ones who didn't really fight like the SF guys. Boy was I fucking wrong. Infantry was always the best route to the spec-ops and to James Bond type intelligence.

Thanks for the wonderful video.
Thanks for answering my question (min 5:50). Looking forward to the video about your injuries. I come from a military family and have nothing but respect for those who are and have served. Thank you Chase!
I'm going to be joining. Already talking to a recruiter. But I'm shooting for 35P, I already know Portuguese fluently hoping to go in with another language though. The more languages you know the better is what I've heard. I haven't taken the ASVAB or DLAB yet, so this could all change. But that's what I'm going for.

Hey Chase! Looking forward to a vid about why you left the army! I think it would be really cool if you talked about your hip injury/surgery and how you were able to bounce back from it/if it still impacts you now? I just had reconstructive surgery on my foot and, let's be honest, it freakin sucks (as does any type of surgery that impacts your ability to move, train, and simply do things on your own). It's really easy to get negative and down on yourself. Quite possibly just as much of a mental challenge as it is physical. Maybe you've already talked about this in a previous vid, but I'm new to the channel :) I admire your positivity, very inspiring to see where you're at now!
Emily Lutz definitely coming soon! And hope you have a speedy recovery - take your time and accept this time of healing. You'll be back in the swing of things soon enough!
Interesting! I was a 96B Intel Analyst (no language training ) eventually met some linguists but they didnt work in a SCIF. cant say what they did but i was so jealous that they never wore BDU's and boots, except for occasional photo or dress uniform inspections.

Second, I have been looking into the military; what branch, what job, ect, ect. In particular, I am looking at joining the Air Force or the Army. You mentioned you considered all the branches, I was wondering if you have any insight towards how either of them (Air Force or Army) select your MOS? The army recruiter was very informative and pleasant to talk to, but there is the whole "recruiters lie" idea stuck in my head at the moment and I have gotten 3 different answers regarding how the Air Force selects your MOS (from the AF advisers and from an AF recruiter). Thank you very much for your time and I hope all is well with your UA-cam channel and retirement.
Is there a way to contact you? I would like to be a linguist and I have a lot of questions. I am bilingual in Spanish and English. Neither language is considered difficult but I have some familiarity with Japanese as I lived in Japan as a kid. I can recognize the language by the mixture of sounds and the writing but I will not understand it. However, I think I would be good at learning a language. I just a lot of questions and rather have my answers by someone who actually knows the answers. Thanks
Are you still serving in a civilian capacity? I’m just wondering how many doors your MOS opened for you out in the world. By the way-thank you for your service and I subscribed!
Hey Chase, I'm a junior in high school and my recruiter just told me that the period for juniors to enlist will open next week and one of my top MOS is 35M (human intel collector) but there isn't much online about it. Being that you were a cryptologic linguist I wanted to know if there was anything at all that you could tell me about 35M. Thanks

Remember, do your part to make sure the eagle never flies away from the Presidio! And...the stories about that T-34 used to be up by the Russian school. Hormones will get the better of you if you're not careful.
I qualified for Intel with my ASVAB and DLAB scores but the Marine Corps doesn't have a slot open right now. Do you think that being a linguist in Intelligence is something that I should look elsewhere for (Army, Navy, etc.) or could I use my scores on another MOS that will create just as good of opportunities for me? Thanks
Depends on what you really want, but I've heard from the Navy guys that their linguists get a lot more time doing their actual MOS than other branches. But then you'd be in the Navy and I'd have to make fun of you. For the Army, your mileage may vary. Like he pointed out, it really depends on what kind of units you are put into.
Thanks for sharing. Though you hated school you have a lifetime skill! And if you have kids, teach them Russian! I am studying Polish (Class 4 like Russian) on my own. My father is fluent in Polish and did not pass it down to his children. It is a lot more challenging than Spanish!
Hey Chase, I'm about to enlist, just got done at MEPS and will be doing my job interview soon (Have to wait longer for a waiver for being slightly allergic to pineapple), and I was thinking MI 35M. Did you get opportunities to go so airborne ans rangee? Cause that is what I want to do very very badly. And do you know if their mission would change? Would they be able to kick ass with the infantry grunts too?
You can opt-in for any school you want, just a matter of getting cleared by your command. And in the MI world their are two realms; strategic and tactical. If you want the "kick ass" one then you should look for a tactical MI assignment, though not always a given. Based off of the needs of the Army and your MOS, rank, etc. Stay safe!
Do a lot of people learn Russian? Is it possible to learn a second language? Also you said you worked with Canadians, Do Canadians also have the same sort of school? I am Canadian and trying to enlist as a possible Linguist.
I wanted to be a 35P, but I missed the minimum DLAB score of 107 by 3 points. Now, I'm looking towards 35M as an alternative since the Army is returning to having the requirement of learning a language for that MOS (according to my recruiter). Would you say your DLAB score ultimately determines your language assigned at DLI? I've read around forums online that even if someone scored lower than the Cat. IV minimum, they were still assigned something like Mandarin
Great video with great sights! I went through the fire academy at Goodfellow in 1996. I'd love to attend DLI. How often do you use the Russian language these days? Don't lose it!
Maybe this has already been asked, but since you’ve been out, did you take a civilian job that related to your job in the Army or are you doing something completely different? I’m looking into this career because I would like to end up working for the FBI one day to help fight against human trafficking and you mentioned that you had some experience in doing that while in the Army. Thanks and thank you for you service sir!
You are not war afflicted, take your short nerd ass and watch harry potter. Why would you ever seek to go to military, I am getting harrassed by Narc aliens and demons that want me dead...
Do you have time for your significant other? My bf’s mos is counter intelligence and he’s currently at pi boot camp. We love each other but I’m afraid his mos will take over his life :/ thoughts and advice
It will be hard work, the military has its own agenda for sure. BUT - they are very, very pro-family and have a lot of systems and programs for people to be together or at least stay in communication and stay safe no matter where you both are.
not at all, I still had my GI Bill/Post-9/11 Bill, VA Home Loan, etc. In fact, I had more medical and financial benefits due to the nature of my injury rating and being medically retired
I was able to score just enough on the DLAB, I got a 98 when the minimum score required was a 95, and chose 35M, military intelligence collector, for my MOS. I leave on February 1st for my basic training at Fort Sill. Any other 35M here that can give me some insight on their experience? Or any tips before I go?
@@monicasalinas3348 Hi, don’t know if you’ve taken the DLAB yet or not, but I recommend understanding english grammar and syntax very very well. And practice listening and PAYING ATTENTION TO DETAIL. Minor details matter
I am hoping you will see this even though I am late. I am currently a 68W and am interested in reclassing to Intel. I know it varies but were reclassed soldiers common or do they tend to pull more new recruits? Any advice?
It is, hands down the hardest test of my life. Just so unique, literal made up languages to decipher! Stay calm and stay focused best you can, no real way I can recommend to study for it.
Chase Chewning Why do recruiters make it sound so easy? Mine told me it was short/simple and not to worry about it. Apparently that's what every recruiter says.
My recruiter made it seem easy so I underestimated it when I took it. I scored a 68,they offer a test run which they told me after,it sucked because I was looking forward to 35M
I’m currently in the army now and want to switch to a 35 series. What 35 series would you see the coolest shit and do the coolest stuff my buddy’s a 35F and he never does anything cool currently my mos has too high of points and is boring so I wanna do something cool
Русский язык - очень полезно, потому что многие люди в бывших советских спутниковых регионах еще говорят на этом языке. Я сейчас в морской пехоте, как текника для БЛА (безпилотных летательных аппаратов), но я хочу изменить свою работу
training is included with the contract, so 6 years active military is 6 years. But a contract is actually for 8 years, so there are 6 active and two in the IRR were you can be recalled if necessary. That almost never happens unless you have a very rare and critical MOS.
I know this is an older video so I hope you still get this comment. First of all, thank you so much for your service. I’m a prior service Marine myself. 1371 Combat Engineer. I’m wondering if you can help me out a little bit. I’m considering re-enlisting into the Marine Corps with a lat move to the Intelligence field. I’ve already checked and I have the ASVAB scores to do so. What I would like to know is, what career opportunities are realistically there after life in Military Intelligence? Is this re-enlistment a potential stepping stone to a long and fruitful career or would I likely be looking at retiring from the military in order to find a good paying job. Thanks in advance and God Bless!
What he didn't tell you was he spent most of his time mopping floors, CQ duty, Sarge's time and waiting for index on useless training exercises in the field or in a SCIF
Ok so I'm leaving for bmt march 27 and I signed up as a ground linguist. After i'm done at the DLI I go back to goodfellow AFB for some more training, when exactly do I go through the SC? What makes it so difficult to pass, what type of things would disqualify someone? I've done my research but it's always good to know from folks who already went through the process. Thanks for the reply!
Hey Chase, what language do you wish you had been assigned if you could do it all over again? I heard they may give you one of your top 3, so wondering which I should pick and in what order! Thanks!
Is there any way to prepare for the DLAB? I am going into the reserves as a 37f, have about three years of college under my belt so got a high score on the asvab pretty easily, but I feel like the language test is a whole different animal.. Plus, like you said, I do NOT want to be re-classed into something else! Thanks for the video!
Is it possible to learn other languages other than the major ones such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, etc...do you know anyone who has ever learned Thai?
Can intel analysts become rangers or spec ops ? Im assuming thats where the line falls between the strategic and the tactical analysts that are probably out in the field helping the infantry guys.
@@Crucialnas thanks that actually helped a lot to clear up. So when he said he was going through pre deployment training and tore his hamstring and hurt his back I assume he was doing infantry training or something like that?
@@samcohen8894 Tactical intelligence primarily focuses on supporting whatever infantry unit they're attached to. Rangers, SOF, airborne/air assault or just infantry in nature. They'll definitely push you physically, deployed or by FTX. Either or, you'll come out hurting haha. Some of my buddies are going tactical, others strategic.
@@samcohen8894 It's always good to do both, that's one really good way to build a career within or outside of the military. I use it as often as possible! Still pretty fluent.
Why would you ever seek to go to military, I am getting harrassed by Narc aliens and demons that want me dead...
hey man I really like the videos your a really chill guy I was wondering if you allowed to what tips can you give about taking the dlab
Does being medically discharged from the military remove any veteran benefits? Such as the GI Bill, VA loans, etc
not at all, I still had my GI Bill/Post-9/11 Bill, VA Home Loan, etc.
Im hoping to join 35M is there any study tips for the DLAB ? Thats what i need to take
@@monicasalinas3348 Hi, don’t know if you’ve taken the DLAB yet or not, but I recommend understanding english grammar and syntax very very well. And practice listening and PAYING ATTENTION TO DETAIL. Minor details matter
Is logistical closely related to counter intelligence? Thank you for your video and answering question.
I am going into SIGINT is there anything i should study before going?
just go into it with an open mind, show up and shut up! They will teach you EVERYTHING you need to know, good luck to you!
I am hoping you will see this even though I am late. I am currently a 68W and am interested in reclassing to Intel. I know it varies but were reclassed soldiers common or do they tend to pull more new recruits? Any advice?
Oh yeah, I was in language school with a lot of reclasses.
salute to you for your service, but your video became very confusing when you said intelligence and Canadian in the same sentence.

Took the ASVAB a few days ago and was offered 35m and 35p but I have to go back for the DLAB test in a few weeks...I heard it's very hard.
I thought the 302 was the hardest (harder than the DLPT); DLAB had no idea what I was doing lol.
I just signed up for 35m Human Intelligence Collection !
How has it been? I just signed up for 35M last week with an option 40
how’s it been bro ?
@@milz7129 Updates?
Howd it all go?
Hi i really like your Q&A vids! Quick question, is the linguistics jobs require top secret clearance?
thanks, and yes it does
Интересно, где там русский пригодился в плане работы. А что, поменять язык или самому выбрать никак?
huh?
Русский язык - очень полезно, потому что многие люди в бывших советских спутниковых регионах еще говорят на этом языке. Я сейчас в морской пехоте, как текника для БЛА (безпилотных летательных аппаратов), но я хочу изменить свою работу
Russia is a mother fucking third world country.
I’m about to start this MOS. Shipping February 10th
how you been ?
Only here because his brother is Maxx Chewning #EverForward
Thanks for this Chase. Are you using any of your linguist training in what you do now ?
Besides conversing with Russian Uber drivers... not so much!
What happens if you are already multilingual? Is the point to see how fast you adapt to a new language or to be as fluent as possible?
They would love to have you! Just have to pass the DLAB language test.
i’m going in army as a 35 sierra i leave april 30 2019 i’m low key nervous af but that top security clearance keeping my nerves away , any advise ??
If your contract is 6yr is that 3yrs or training + 6yrs doing your job
Or 3yrs training + the rest of your contract which is 3yrs
training is included with the contract, so 6 years active military is 6 years.
But a contract is actually for 8 years, so there are 6 active and two in the IRR were you can be recalled if necessary.
That almost never happens unless you have a very rare and critical MOS.
So when you were stationed at Lackland AFB were you assigned to Field Station Medina as a linguist?
How well do you speak Russian now?
I'm still fluent, I use it as often as possible.
formerfreemasons.com/?page_id=392
What he didn't tell you was he spent most of his time mopping floors, CQ duty, Sarge's time and waiting for index on useless training exercises in the field or in a SCIF
definitely not MOST, but yeah there is always those types of tasks in the military I have realized from talking to all branches.
How's the Security Clearance process like? Is it easy to pass or not?
Very long and not easy to pass
Ok so I'm leaving for bmt march 27 and I signed up as a ground linguist. After i'm done at the DLI I go back to goodfellow AFB for some more training, when exactly do I go through the SC? What makes it so difficult to pass, what type of things would disqualify someone? I've done my research but it's always good to know from folks who already went through the process. Thanks for the reply!
Hey Chase, what language do you wish you had been assigned if you could do it all over again? I heard they may give you one of your top 3, so wondering which I should pick and in what order! Thanks!
Would have loved to have gotten Persian Farsi since my wife is Iranian
Is this an mos that can possibly see combat?
Is there any way to prepare for the DLAB? I am going into the reserves as a 37f, have about three years of college under my belt so got a high score on the asvab pretty easily, but I feel like the language test is a whole different animal.. Plus, like you said, I do NOT want to be re-classed into something else! Thanks for the video!
Is it possible to learn other languages other than the major ones such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, etc...do you know anyone who has ever learned Thai?
I do, yes. And they assign you a language based upon your language aptitude test results (DLAB) and current linguist needs of the military.
I qualified for 35p, but I was too scared to take the DLAB. I ended up signing as a 15n(avionics mechanic)
DLAB was INTENSE!!!
Chase Chewning thanks for taking the time and replying, and for the prior service! keep the great work!
Is there anyway to study for the DLAB? If it’s a bunch of made up noises and languages i don’t really know how to study for that.
There may be now, but when I took it I had no prep material.
Can intel analysts become rangers or spec ops ? Im assuming thats where the line falls between the strategic and the tactical analysts that are probably out in the field helping the infantry guys.
when at monterey did you train with canadians also have you trained at pendelton
Not in Monterey, when I was TDY overseas. Also while stationed in San Antonio, TX. Never at Pendelton.
do you get to pick your language at dli? I want to learn portuguese, do you think I can have a choice in the say of what I learn.
Diamond Beatz no
Diamond Beatz you won’t get Portuguese
Diamond Beatz I’ve been at DLI taking Russian for 3 months now, so if you need anything I can help you out :)
@@joeprentice5019 Don't forget that there's an online site where you can study for free.
What exactly does a tactical intelligence unit do? I'm kind of confused on that
Higher rates of deployment. You'll do more on the field work, usually supporting directly or indirectly. Depends on the unit and the unit's mission.
@@Crucialnas well I actually want to try both if I'm ever able to but I think I'll want to do tactical first
@@samcohen8894 It's always good to do both, that's one really good way to build a career within or outside of the military. Though if it'll be your first duty station you wont have much say what unit you'd like to be placed into. You can have a state/country wishlist though nothing more specific than that.
You worked at lackland? That's in my city !
Pico sure did, 2005-2007.
I appreciate your service brotha.
