Get into engineering. Doesn't have to be school, but even self-learning. I did a micromouse competition in college. Fun stuff...I got nowhere near this level tho lol

Aside from the chances of someone accidentally bumping or breaking part of the maze, that might also track dirt onto the course that could mess with the sensors and/or wheels of the competitors.
