The German commentator at the beginning says that ranking number 23 was a very disappointing position for Edberg at the end of the 1995 season (this is the first match of the 1996 season). He even would go down to ranking position 55 after a very poor start of that 1996 season with many first round losses. He eventually would finish his last season on the tour 1996 at ranking number 14.
Not only indoors. This was an outdoor hard court event in Doha/Qatar by the way (night session). I think in the later part of their careers Becker dominated Edberg all in all. Edberg's last "victory" over Becker was a default because of injury by Becker in Paris-Bercy in 1990 if I remember correctly.
Without a doubt Becker could beat Edberg any day. Except the problem with Becker was always mental. He had the physical skills but when he lost it, he lost it. E.g, 1990 Wimbledon should be his.
He was so focused in 96.. just loved his tennis around that period.

Becker won the Australian Open a few weeks later. Very impressive!
