ATP 1996 Vienna Edberg vs Muster (thriller!)

- One of the most dramatic matches ever played in Wiener Stadthalle. Edberg played with flu and fever more than 38 degrees. In the last game he was still able to power smash, forehand and backhand winner to beat Austrian number 1. He was so exhausted that he got spasms after handshake and was not able to sign autographs for ball boys.
What a beautiful volley.
Edberg's play was art!
Edberg probably the classiest player ever. Always cool. Same as Borg. Edberg and Mcenroe best serve and volleyers ever
Superb Net approach, crisp volleys and beautiful back hand. That was Stefan Edberg.
how edberg plays the volleys with that 85 headsize classic pro staff racket is unbelievable
its not about how many inches you have in that head size, its how you use it
@@johnsmith1789 The more weight in the head, the bigger is the sweetspot.
@@johnsmith1789 I hope you don’t say that to your wife buddy 😆
Why was it so unbelievable? There was a time when tennis was more than getting to the ball and applying brute force. If you think playing with what was still considered a ' modern ' racket back then what would you say about Borg, McEnroe winning with rackets with a headize of 66 - 68 sq inches?
Edberg was pure gentleman and class act.
Edberg was a living tennis teaching book!!!
if there were two players edberg wish he could play all the time. im sure it would be muster and brad gilbert. he knew how to beat these guys
Thomas Muster was such a pitbull on clay ! Edberg had the class of Federer back in the day !🎾
That's the reason why Federer got Edberg as his coach for a while. The 2 think and play the same only Edberg's first volley and backhand slice/flat/topped were in a different league to Federer's
The opposite of Borg in terms of playing, so gentleman and a world class. Unforgettable.
Opposite, how?
@@MarcusLager hey brother, I think he meant that Borg was more of a baseline player and Edberg was almost strictly serve and volley. But if you go back and look at some of Borg's matches, he wasn't too bad at the net himself! Have a good one man and I'm sorry for being so talkative.
Edbergs last year, played well here
Edberg looked full strength!
18:20 What a reaction from Edberg
Great reaction, but Muster's shot was unnecessary, he had plenty of other choices.
@@purveyoroffinefoodslaszlo9955 Nah that shot was aight. I mean, why not? It's legal, after all.
@@purveyoroffinefoodslaszlo9955 dirtiest play I've ever seen from him.
Muster's record against Edberg was 0-10. Edberg was expert at rushing Muster and cutting off his high topspin shots at the net.
Muster n'a jamais réussi à résoudre le problème Edberg.
Même, et, surtout sur terre battue.
Il a toujours été très à l'aise contre lui.
Tommy's groundstrokes sat up too high allowing Stevey Edberg to put away the volleys; whereas guys like Jimmy Courier and Andre drove through the ball more and had a lower net clearance.
I miss the whistling from the crowd when they thought there was a bad call
i remember watching this on austrian tv .. edberg's style of play was just too much for muster .. as it's always been .. i remember rooting for muster but eventually realising that edberg was the better all-around player
Muster was a so called fight machine, never gave up. Although he was not the most talented player on the circuit, he became at least one time the number one. Who of us tennis players can say this 😎😉.
What a great commentator!
You can tell Edberg truly is not feeling well during this match, coughing quite a bit and leaning over some. At the end he couldn’t even sign autographs. That’s quite a win when you probably just want to be in bed!
I remember that match. He became ill during the match, some virus, and had a high fever at the end. I believe he withdrew from th next matcj.
@@TheMightySandowno, he lost the next match to Siemerink, in the 3rd set tie break. I was 12 and I cried. Literally
@@medo_pg7786 you are correct. Memory is not to be trusted. I think he had the flu and had to abort the tournament.
@@TheMightySandowa person tend to remember those painfull feelings. I worshiped Stefan as a child. That loss to Siemerink really hurt me, because I really wanted Stefan to win a tournament in his farewell year on the tour, and I thought he had pretty good chance in Vienna. He ended the year without the tournament victory, however. If I cemember correctly, Siemerink made it to the final of this tournment and lost to Becker in 4.
@@medo_pg7786 no singles win, but remember he won the Australian Open in doubles that year!
Thomas can't cut the musterd against Edberg.
cool post
Was war da am Ende los, Schwächeanfälle oder was?
Edberg wurde krank und hatte am Ende des Spiels Fieber.
Ahhhh - Muster. Imagine if he'd never had that accident. He's the real King of Clay, not that Spanish Sack of Steroids.
LOL
Ryan Isahac Another butthurt Fedtard. Rafa will overtake Federer in Grand Slams. Who the fuck is Muster?
fed Will always be the goat!
Stupid take on your part. You look at matches fed lost and ignore his incredible successes. Anyone can pinpoint somebodies defeated to put them down. 20 majors, 103 titles , more weeks #1 Fed is the goat. Plus no one will ever play a better more complete and talented game. Neither baseline bots Rafa or Nole could do that.
@andreasmissiroli and none of them needed steroids to win
edberg's t-shirts, in the latter part of his career, were awful .... he looked like he was in pajamas
=
Back in 90s, I heard everything about Thomas Muster as No 1 talent. Nope. His strokes are just too much spin with no speed.
que le paso al final a Stefan....problemas estomacales??
It was a virus. Great performance, anyway
Stefan Edberg VS Thomas Muster: 10-0
despite they play 4th times on clay !
