I have a tip for cutting open your button holes with an unpicker or seam ripper. Place a pin across the top so you can't accidentally rip too far. I was having a little freak out watching this part😂.
I have a little chisel type tool that you just put inside the buttonhole and whack the top of the handle with a small hammer. It cuts the buttonhole all at once.
I was taught at school to start at one end of the buttonhole with your seam ripper and rip it to the middle then stop, turn, and start from the other side of your buttonhole to the middle, that way you won’t accidentally rip the stitches. I still do it this way 50 years later, love your dress Janelle ✂️🧵
When sewing in buttons by hand, they can often end up too tight, especially if the fabric is thicker. To avoid this happening, you can put a toothpick or something similar under the button to make the button sewn on a little more loosely. Then, just remove the toothpick when you are done stitching the button on. You can also wrap the threads around the stitches, just under the button, a few times to make a small shank.
If the fabric is very thick, I often sew a simple flat button on the back side of the fabric as well as the decorative button on the front. This is in additional to your advice given above. I like making a shank as well.
Lovely tutorial, just a little add, when I use the seam ripper to cut the buttonholes open, I add a pin at the end where I want to stop, just in case I slip, It can not go any further if a pin is in the way, have a beautiful week Janelle
Thanks Janelle. I watch many sewing videos but yours really stand out because you bring so much happiness through out the process. You're a great motivator. 😊
I always sew buttons on by hand (I don't do a lot of sewing though, but sometimes I replace buttons on a thrifted garment). Anyway, someone once told me not to double the thread, but quadruple it--thread the two ends of the thread through the needle, then fold over and tie a knot--you'll be working with four threads instead of two. This basically reduces the time spent sewing on buttons by half.
Currently working on them this week, and hope to have them back in stock by the end of the month/early next month. Sign up to my newsletter or follow me on instagram to be the first to know when they are available 😊

Thank you this is very helpful. Perhaps try turning off autofocus on the camera?
Which do I do first, the buttonhole or the button? Thanks
Buttonhole - that way you can line up exactly where the buttons should go ☺️
When will your paper patterns be available again?
