      @@ErickLandonRPG i dissapoint tale of zetria why ! because isn't story and character problem. the big problem that's games is gameplay clumsy. i explain if not CS you can't combo but worst it's camera is piece of shi** in few place in building or narrow place camera is misplaced. and plus l'ia ally is stupid because her die easely whatever boss or ennemy because he put too much time long to heal or to attack or to defend therselves. that's doing is worst tale of in term of gameplay while tale of symphonia instead good gameplay, ia camera.

      Zestiria was my first Tales game as well and I loved it! Put over 50 hours into it, blissfully unaware of the criticism and controversy. My thought is if that's the worst game in the franchise, the rest will be life-changing.

    Xenosaga 2 was really fun. I think it the learning curve that put people off. It not simple. I learned the game's mechanic after getting stuck to a boss. You have to do some kind of air or ground combo to the enemy to get big damage.

    The thing with Xenosaga 2 is I think the difficulty was designed around doing all side quests. It’s still fairly challenging then, but the quests give you very important skills that help in defeating enemies, or good ethers to help you survive. It doesn’t exactly recommend you do the side quests though, and there are people who don’t like side questing at all. And finding the quests and how to do them is very hard without a guide. I love it, and I’m kind of a completionist, but I can see why people dislike it... except for the battle system, people complain about it only because they can’t understand it. Like I said, the quests give you abilities to hit weaknesses a lot easier, or obtain skills faster, but the game doesn’t tell you how beneficial they are. A lot of them are very tedious too, so it can really turn people off.

    Interesting list! Regarding Xenosaga II, I honestly feel it is only on a list like this because of how *outstanding* Episodes I & III were. I really think that I & III are all-time greats (both are easily "S" tier IMO) so naturally, any drop off was going to hurt a game like II. I'd give it a solid "B" ranking though. The story is still superb and I loved how it focused on Jr. (one of the best characters in the series for sure). It's still solid enough.

    I'm currently playing through Xenosaga Episode II for the first time and so far (just beat Ornus Stronghold), I cannot get why people consider it a step back from Saga I and not a step forward.
    The combat is complex, dynamic and fun, the art style aged MUCH better, the sidequests are a great addition, it has actual in-game music and the cinematic score has the blessing of Yuki Kajiura and seeing characters further fleshed out is always nice.
    Realy, the only issue I see is some new VAs feeling a bit miscast, but that's nothing to split hairs over.

      I only had an issue with late/end game pacing. I can't quite explain it but the game itself felt like it turned into a turtle that went back into the shell. Felt like all the grinding in the world couldn't get your team ready for that last dungeon.

  • @jf7296
    @jf7296 5 років тому +4

    From a big fan of the Xenosaga series and Xenogears.
    It wasn't the art style, even if I like the first one better. I never hated it, also I never found it as difficult as people say. The only thing I can't beat was the third optional boss.
    Now, what I hate about it was the changes to the combat system.
    They got rid of the deathblow system. That was the iconic fighting system for the series.
    I found the letter system to be boring.
    Also the level system wasn't my favorite. I have nothing against using a system of buying abilities. It was just every character was the same. So it made them all blend together.

    Now I remember the name of that brutally hard and frustrating game on ps2 "Breath Of Fire Dragon Quarter". I never played breath of fire before, however this game threw me for a loop as a kid. Usually I could figure things out, but this game was unforgiving and tedious.

    I actually think breath of fire was one of the most fun games I played when I was younger. The story was good and I didn't mind the challenge of using your dragon gauge sparingly. Mainly saving it for the final boss and for when you really really get cornered. It brings a different sense of suspense knowing you don't have an unlimited supply of power you can just spam and beat the game. High risk high reward and lots of planning and strategy has to go into the game and that's what I enjoyed about it

    I'v just about completed all the Dragon Quest games and have been a fan for a long time but imo, I gotta give the black sheep to Dragon Quest IX. Yes, I get I know this is a favorite for a lot of people, I actually played it not too long ago to see if it ages well, this was the last DQ I played too in order to complete the series. If you say this is your favorite DQ, IT'S MOST LIKELY your first DQ and nostalgia is part of it or it's the only DQ you have played. (Again, not saying everyone but in general that's what it seems) but here is why.
    Pros:
    The music is nice and a little on te mellow side like DQ7.
    The story is was kinda interesting, the best thing about the game imo.
    The final boss has the most backstory compared to the other bosses that are just evil demon lords.
    It keeps the traditional open world exploration.
    Cons:
    Your party has no personality, they took the old style of Dragon Quest III where you would hire recruits. (and that was THE ONLY problem I had with DQ3) So the fact that they brought it back was kinda disappointing especially how they made much better characters in the Zenethian trilogy (DQ4-6) along with 7 and 8. See it was more acceptable when DQ3 did this because of the time it came out and the series was trying new things and when it didn't work out, they made better games but since they went back to it, it ruined the experience of going around with real people.
    The character building is so poorly done. Firstly when you swap vocations your base level restarts back to 1, making the game more grindy than it already is. I understand DQ is suppose to be a grindy series but this just makes it tedious.
    Speaking of grinding being tedious in the game. The amount of XP you gain is based off level. Usually in the DQ series a Liquid Metal Slime would give about 10K XP on kill, if you try to kill a LMS on level 1 from your other party members aiding you, the other party members would get the 10K and the one that is level 1 would get about 2-3K, which is RIDICULOUS.
    In DQ6-7, in order to get intermediate classes, you would have to master 2 beginner classes, which is fine because it's a consistent way of building a character you max 2 classes and you get a hybrid class. In DQ9 in order to get an intermediate class you have to do a quest in order to unlock them and they feel like chores to do. Why not just give us the class in the first place? Why can't I earn it like in DQ6 and 7? It's horrible.
    You don't get skill points on every level up so you hardly even feel like your characters bare progressing that much.
    The skill abilities that you could learn like Kazing and Multiheal take way too long to learn.
    DQ2 is not so bad if you play it on the Super Famicom translated or on the Gameboy Color, english NES is an outdated port.
    Also RIP to the Lunar series, Dragon Song was horrible.

    honestly ar tonelico not appearing again is not because the series is dead because of qoga. but because the series closing with 3rd game and they decided to wrap up the world story at novel released only in japan. and it's bandai namco copyrighted title too not gust sole project.
    that's why ciel/ar no surge tell the story at separate planet. and it wrap up at ar no surge too with ion accomplishes her purpose.
    i can see it become new ip again but if they decide to do that. but they will make lot of world setting again. and it wouldn't come anytime soon with how it sells.

    If you'd like to give Dragon Quest 2 another try, play the SNES remake. It's redesigned to be easier, and you get way more EXP and gold for each monster. It really makes it feel less tedious. Of course, it's still a classic JRPG, but it's a lot more bearable than the NES version. I think the GB version is the same as the SNES version, if you insist on playing an officially localized version, as opposed to a fan-translation.

    It took you a while to understand the hate for Xenosaga Episode II? It's called, "Winnie the Pooh voice acting in the English dub." That's pretty much it. Well, maybe that and the game's main plot is only about 20 hours long and the game was still full price when it released. The first episode was closer to 50-60 hours, by comparison. You're right--it's a great game otherwise.
    Also glad to see Shadow Hearts on this list. I own all of that series and they're legitimately pretty awesome games.
    P.S. Zestiria is fine. Skills/equipment are too hard to optimize, but even if someone otherwise hates the game, Lailah is bae and that alone saves it.

    • @Skallva
      @Skallva 5 років тому +1

      Episode I is only around 30 hours long, what are you talking about?
      Plus, the voice acting is not even bad. Sure, some VA changed were unnecessary, but so far for me (just beat Ormus Stronghold), I haven't encountered any obviously bad performances (heck, I feel chaos was better-cast in ep. II) and the returing actors are as good as in ep. I.

    • @Nyonics
      @Nyonics 5 років тому

      @@Skallva You know what, I was going off my times for my first playthrough of each game back when they originally came out in the early 2000s, and I'll admit I play through RPGs more slowly than average. Even still, web sites that track statistics like time to beat have episode 1 at 40 hours average and 60 for completionists.
      They list episode 2 at 29 hours average and 51 completionist, so it's still ten hours shorter than episode 1 by aggregate data regardless.
      chaos is better in ep 2 and 3, yes. Momo is not, and it's mostly a function of the VA not realizing that Xenosaga was not a Saturday morning cartoon for episode 2 (or that Momo is not actually mentally a small child). By episode 3 pretty much everything is fine again, even with the new VAs.
      I'm not saying I don't like episode 2, but Namco sent me a trailer on a demo disc way back in the day that gave me high expectations for the story and I was let down by the delivery in some parts. I'm definitely not a "subtitles purist," type, but just watch this trailer and tell me it's not on another level compared to the English dub:
      ua-cam.com/video/uWLYJri-e6A/v-deo.html

    • @Skallva
      @Skallva 5 років тому

      @@Nyonics It's still much less time than you made it out to be. Plus, Saga II takes on average 55.5 hours for a completionist playthrough, going from the same site you used your statistics from. That category includes stuff like level grinding, anyway, so it's not even worth discussing. What IS worth discussing is that doing all side stuff adds extra 8 hours to the game so the main story may be shorter, but the game still has Saga I's longevity (which only had one real sidequest that wasn't segment addresses and 2 hidden bosses).
      And honestly, I hear very little difference between Saga I and II MOMO. If she sounds more childish, then good - she *IS* a child and was one in Saga I as well (don't try telling me giving Ziggy his cutesy nickname wasn't childish, or wanting to see 'mommy' or 'daddy').
      I mean, I get Shion and KOS-MOS (those two definitely feel at least a bit miscast), but c'mon. MOMO is far from the worst offender.

      @@Skallva You're right that completionist categories aren't worth discussing, since the bulk of the time it takes to play episode II is sidequests and optional stuff, which you wouldn't know yet since you haven't finished it. I hope you have fun with Mikumari and the e-mail contest bosses. In fact, maybe the best way to illustrate the difference in plot length here is not even average time to beat, but just compressing the game into plot-advancement and cut-scenes:
      Episode 1 comes in at 7 hours, 9 minutes.
      Episode 2 comes in at 4 hours, 28 minutes, 10 seconds
      Episode 3 comes in at 8 hours, 42 minutes, 32 seconds
      ...all by the same guy on youtube. It's a pretty obvious difference. Episode 2 is simply not as long as the other two games in the series are. Some people also consider it kind of a black sheep because the story focuses more on Jr. and Albedo and treats KOS-MOS & the Gnosis like an afterthought, whereas the first and third game focus heavily on KOS-MOS and the Gnosis. I actually liked where they end up going with Albedo in episode 2, but I won't spoil it for you. If I was going to criticize any game's story elements, I'd pick on some of the stuff that happens near the end of episode 3, which again I'll kindly not spoil for you.
      Also, yes, Momo is nails on chalkboard in episode 2. Yes, she's sort of a child, but she's also an information library. In the first game, she acts like an information library with childish qualities. In the second game, she acts like she doesn't belong in the Xenosaga universe, and can't be bothered to take anything seriously. But this is only true for the English dub.
      We may have to agree to disagree, which is fine, 'cause when I made my initial comment, I didn't know you existed, and wasn't talking to you anyway.

      Sidequests are still a part of the game, no matter if you like them or not. Sure, Saga II may be shorter in terms of the main story, but it's still a fact that if you plan on expriencing as much of each game as possible, the playthroughs of Saga I and II should be about similar in length.
      And nope, still not seeing what you mean. If anything, it seems more like a writing issue, but even with that in mind, MOMO's character was not established strongly enough in Saga I that she couldn't get a bit more childish later on.
      I guess let's agree to disagree, though... ouch. That last sentence hurt a bit.

    i hope you finish off dragon warrior 2 some time. though play the ps4 remake, it has some important quality of life upgrades. the main issue with dw2 is that it's actually pretty open world, so it becomes a "what do i do now" fest. however, if you look at an faq for a couple milestone points to give you a little direction, it's fun to be able to do areas in different orders.

      Well I don’t know what exactly is the main problem of 7, but I know the 3ds version has a game breaking bug in the end game. As for 9 it’s not the mmo, it’s the ds game that has a major focus with multiplayer, you can play the game without other people but the entire game your entire party is all silent. They used the old party system from 2 and 3 where you recruit people but they have no plot relevance. Some people have a problem with that. Others don’t... so it more comes to opinion 😂

    If I may, on its own, xenosaga 2 was a technically very good game, the extremely frustrating part for xenosaga fan was more the lenght and how little the main narrative advanced. The narrative was excellent, it has some of the best moments in jrpg history, the problem is it completed episode 1 rather than add substantially to it.
    The simplest way I can put it is they took the climax out of xenosaga 1 episode and sold it as a sequel.
    The thing is, I'm not using hyperbole, that's litterally what the developper did, they realised xenosaga 1 was too long so they separated it into 2. Once I realized that (wow 14 years ago, time sure flies) everything made sense and I couldnt unsee it afterward in all the gameplay mechanics
    Why is it a black sheep? well, try to find 1 person who finished xenogears from start to finish, appreciating the deep story and characters for a good 45-60 hours, who then finished the main storyline of xenosaga 2 and said (It's over after 15 hours cool? color me satisfied.)
    It doesn't suck by any means, that's what so frustrating, its that it could have been so much better, man in a perfect world, xenosaga 1 and 2 would have been 1 satisfying complete introduction to xenosaga and then who knows, we would have seen 5 other epic instalments.

I basically forced myself to do a boss fight for over 3 hours so I could get Jin's swimsuit, because I knew I wouldn't play it again. So much of that game disappointed me. I guess it was the same for others, that's why there are only III.

I honestly can't put my finger on why either....but I didn't make it too terribly far before I sent it back, maybe 10 hours give or take.
    also why do people keep saying Xeno franchise like gears, saga & blade are all the same thing? Xenoblade is it's own franchise altogether with only a few similar themes & concepts and the occasional cameo ( like KOS-MOS & T-ELOS being Blades in Xenoblade 2, or the same game having costumes & such referencing the saga trilogy & gears out of respect for Monolith's prior work )....gears & saga do share a LOT of plot details & characters though, so I can get how those are seen as 1 series but Xenoblade Chronicles it's completely separate. Unless somebody at MonolithSoft makes some very official statement saying otherwise, I simply can't see them a 1 single franchise ( especially since Xenoblade is a Nintendo franchise, Xenosaga is a Namco-Bandai franchise and Xenogears is owned by Square Enix.... )....
