Of course this is 4 years old now but the next step would be to swap the Channel 1 & 2 reproducer cards on the far right in back. It's either #1 has an issue, wasn't seated properly, or had a potentiometer set too low.
A number of possible playback problems 1. Dirty heads not allowing the tape to make good contact. 2. Azimuth 3. Head alignment. 4. Uneven Head wear. 5. Faulty Playback Head.

Was a 2 track standard speed A77 machine a factory made option? Never seen or heard of one before, only high speeds.
