Got an original copy of that book from 1896, incredible book to look through!
Yes, it is great to look through. The physics is way above my head, but great to look through!!
I have a Brodie touring Bike , it is a great bike. Great to see the man who designed it.
Happy you like your touring bike! Thanks for watching...
Holy Cow, Paul! That takes me back. When I was a kid in Boy Scouts, a couple of built what I "think" we called a High Bike. Plans were either in Boy's Life magazine, or possibly Popular Mechanics, I can't remember now. Take our bicycles, pull the wheels off, take the fork out of the frame, and remove the crank. We'd flip the frame upside down, put the crank back in it opposite where it was, stick the fork back in it upside down from where it was, put the wheels back on it. Then we'd take a couple lengths of galvanized pipe and make a new seat perch, high as we could reach the pedals, and then another piece of galvanized pipe and bend it in a gentle "S" curve and poke that down into the neck of the fork, and tighten it up. Stick a seat on top of the perch, climb up on whatever was tall enough for us to get on it and get it going, and ride them all over the place. Stopping without serious injury was always an adventure. Tat "S" curve in the pipe in the forks neck let us steer it somewhat. I'm surprised I've lived as long as I have with all that crazy stuff we pulled back in those days!
LOL Me too back in the 60's early 70
I remember seeing those bikes in Mechanix Illustrated around 1961 or 62. They were quite a thing for a while. I even remember one made out of an iron bed frame.
That's a Great story, thanks. I didn't realize Popular Mechanics had the plans to make them. We got Popular Science, I think, and never saw it, or else my memory has faded. It was a great era. Imagine magazines with that kind of info nowadays... No Way!!
I can’t really say what I was expecting but those hubs as depicted in your book look tire sophisticated for the era! They will look like jewels in bronze!
Thanks Chris.. Bronze is quite heavy, but cool to work with for the older, antique projects...
I loved the editing of the drawing segment! It made it seem so effortless. If only technical drawing were as easy in real life as Paul makes it look 😊
I think that Mitch's video work is capable of making it look easy for me! Thanks for watching!
Hi
Great to see you back on the tube
You are looking good I hope your troubles are behind you
Great vid
Thank you. Yes, I am working hard to stay healthy. Hopefully 2024 is a Great Year!!
Had one of these in NZ back in the 70s (13 years old), all we did was turn a regular bike frame upside down, turn the forks upside down in the head tube and make an extension for the seat on the bottom bracket which was now at the top, and extended handlebars. The teacher banned us from riding it to school. (May have had to turn the crank over??)
Yes, there was a lot of creativity back in the day. I'm so glad that I lived through (and survived..) that time in history.. Thanks for watching...
Can't wait to see more of this project. Happy New Year, Paul and Mitch!
Happy new year! Thanks for watching!
Another interesting project 👏👌Paul
Cheers Chris
Thanks Chris. I was thinking about you recently! All the best in 2024...
Just lovely!
Paul, this is such an exciting build. Can't wait to see footage of the bike show with your two bikes! 2024 is going to be awesome! 👍👍😎👍👍
we used to take two bike frames and weld them together one on top of the other and put the pedals on the top bike and run a really long tube down to the forks and to the handle bars. then find something tall enough to climb onto get to get on it,. you definitely didn't want to fall off, That was our Giraffe Bike's.
Yes, I have seen them like that, and taller too. You are 100% correct... Don't fall off!
Excited to watch this build (like all your builds!). Go Paul and Mitch, Happy New Year and keep moving forward!
Thanks, and Happy New year to you as well. Yes, Keep Moving Forward!
When I was a kid I acquired one of those Schwinn sprockets with the heart shaped cutouts from somewhere. I always thought it was neat, I ended up using it on bike I built from bits and pieces.
Yes, I like that sprocket hearts too.. I know it's not entirely original, but I am happy with it, and probably most people won't realize it's from a Schwinn. Thanks for watching!
Awesome. If there was a Brodie shirt that said "Bronze is classy' with a line drawing/graphic of the hub I could be convinced to buy.
Thanks. Yes, maybe we do need a new shirt design for 2024....
Salam Alaikum dear master! It's a very interesting job. The "Minivelo" bike has become very popular now. Looking at the Giraffe bike, I understand what inspired the engineers of the Minivelo. We can say that they turned out to be a dwarf giraffe. All the best to you and the health of the maestro!
Thanks you very much.. I am doing my best to keep healthy so that the videos can continue!
Happy New Year Paul and Mitch, thanks for the videos and bringing us along!
Thank you. Happy New Year to you as well...
Well that's a first - Happy new year to Mitch and yourself!
Happy New Year Frank!
When is your hair getting its own channel Paul ? 😉😂😂👏👍🤷♂
He'll need a Barbershop quartet.
it would be great and educational to see saddle being made!
I have one sad Brooks to be rescued.....
I definitely want to see more of this build! Happy New Year Paul. 👍👍
You will! Happy New Year to you as well....
Not a computer in sight. Paper pen and ruler. That’s how it’s done!
That's my style... Thanks for watching!
6:00 ~ I think WWII was the decisive line when the skip tooth was discontinued.
happy new year , great to see you looking healthy again !
Thank you.. Happy New Year!!
Great work Paul and Mitch. Happy 2024
Thank you Peter. All the best to you as well...
One of those Victorian bicycle designs where you just have to wonder: what were they thinking and what were they smoking? 😂🤣
Best wishes for the new year Paul and Mitch. I await with eager anticipation your version of the Pedersen, I know it would be superb and would team up nicely with the bike stand and the hose nozzle. What more could anyone want or need? More power to you both from Australia.
Thanks David in Australia! I also made an 1888 Whippet full suspension bike, but that was before I got together with Mitch and started making videos... I do wish that bike had been documented like we do now...
I was extremely impressed with your Whippet, it should be suspended on the wall of an art gallery and incidentally, whippets have been my dog breed for about the last 45 years.@@paulbrodie
Thank you David. There is a Bicycle Show in June, and my bikes will be in it.. I had a Great Dane named Sophie for a few years...
Another master piece to be born.
Happy New Year Paul and Mitch 🎉 🙏
You are so very kind.. Thank you!!!!!
I used to have a Cannondale ONZA which I love how high it was. A couple of inches made all the difference.
No pun intended! 😂
Thanks for watching!!
I can't wait to see that hub!
1:28 NAHBS = "North American Handmade Bicycle Show"
Merry Xmas and happy new year mr Paul and Mitch….Ever time I watch your videos I learn something new….I cut up an old damage frame just find out the math behind it. I can tell you that math does not lie, now I’m putting together and is working out the new design that I came up with it. Any welders you recommend from harbor freight… I will always be grateful for all the knowledge you giving on your videos…..🚴♀️🚴🏻🚴🏼♂️
Thank you for liking our videos.. We appreciate it! That's great you are working with an old frame and re-envisioning it... I bought both my welders back in 88/89 so I am completely out of touch with what is currently available, sorry....
Supper cool
Looks like a pretty tall gear for a "hedge cruiser".
Hi Scott! Yes, you are right, the gearing is really tall... But, it will rarely be ridden, and Big Chainrings do look cool, so Why Not? Thanks for watching...
Fantastic project ! Happy New Year Paul and Mitch
Happy new year!
This will be good!
Happy New Years from Calgary!
Look forward to it Paul, happy new year
Happy New Year.
It's strange the drawing of the hub from the book had no lock nuts on the bearing cones.
I wonder if that's just how it was done or if the drawing isn't accurate?
Happy new year
😁"bronze is classier"😁
Rad, dude.
Paul, are you sure you are going to need a hub shell of 100mm? And not a hub-assembly (including axle, locknuts, bearings) to be 100mm O.L.D.? I don't know the spacing of that fork, obviously, but I'm thinking it a fairly quickly made calculating error.
Arjan you are correct. The hub shell is 95mm, so the spacers at either end bring the total to 100mm. I don't always get everything correct in the midst of filming a video, so thanks for your Eagle Eye!!
What kind of bronze - looks like SAE 660? Machines like it, too.
Wouldn't the hubs from that era be cast? Maybe you should add some angle to the flange face to match a draft angle of the casting?
I want to make an electric tall bike because that would be fun.... 😂
How is the spoon brake going to work with that beautiful fender?
The spoon brake works fine, just not going downhill in the rain!! Thanks for watching....
@@paulbrodie I just thought that the fender was going to be between the spoon and the tire. Cheers
No, the fender ends right behind the Spoon Brake.. It's not a problem...
Looking forward to see the following steps of building a hub😎
Thanks, me too!
Very similar frame to the horrid 80's Moosegoose BMX from Mongoose.
You make some amazing creations... I enjoy every one of your videos 👌
I wonder what your thoughts on Jeff Jones bikes are 🤔... although I understand if you'd rather not comment.
Best wishes for the New Year, cheers Alistair 👍
Thanks Alistair. I have never heard of Jeff Jones, sorry. Happy New Year to you as well!
Wanna see that shape!
хай, Пол Броуди.
it would also keep your feet out the dirty water
That’s what I was thinking too. There was an incredible amount of horse crap in the streets back then.
Yes, that was one of the benefits too!
I've had that very book since about '82, not as well thumbed as your copy. I think the extra height of the giraffe bike may have been to keep the rider farther from the filthy streets and roads of the era 💩
Closer to those mounted on horses as well...
The barber needs to take a little more off the top
Think you’ll ever do a video on frame #4267? I always enjoy the videos you and Mitch make, but I especially like anything to do with your mountain bikes!
#4267 was my MTB built in 2018... That was before Mitch and I teamed up, so sorry, there is no video. And, I sold the frame and fork to a friend. Thanks for watching...
I would love to watch a video dedicated to the saddle fabrication!!! The leathercraft and all things required!!!
Yes! I second this
I sent the saddle to Greg Hunt in Pennsylvania. I will ask if he can take photos or shoot a little video. I have no experience working with leather... Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for the video, Paul. Great to see you come out of 2023 much better than when you started the year. Happy New Year and looking forward to seeing more of you in ‘24. 🙂
Thank you very much.. Yes, 2023 was a bit rough, so I am hoping 2024 will be great!!
First time coming across your channel.
Cool build.
Thanks for finally locating our little channel....
I want to recreate the original Raleigh Racer. You always inspire us Paul. Fantastic stuff ! 🚲
You Should. It would be a great learning experience. Thanks for commenting!! 🤒🤒
I fondly remember riding down with you to NAHBS in Sacramento the year you showed the Whippet. Fun times
Yes, Shawn, Good Times for sure! All the Best for 2024!
Happy new year Paul and Mitch, you'll find me behind my screen each time you're engaged in amazing projects. I enjoy, thank you.
Very nice of you to say so. We appreciate your comments!
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the project.
Thanks. Me too!
H.N.Y PAUL .H.N.Y .MITCH.
What an exciting project, cant wait to see how it evolves! Happy New Year Paul & Mitch, thank you for all the great content you posted in 2023, loved the gravel bike build.
Thank you.. Yes, we are still having fun making videos and that is a good sign!!....
That's only a baby giraffe. I was working at the local bike shop in 1976, the year of the US Bicentennial, and for the 4th of July parade I built three bikes. One was an adult giraffe, I just welded two frames one on top of the other (as I recall, they were "english racer" frames so 26" wheels originally). I used the top bottom bracket for the cranks, built it out with 20" wheels. It was very stable, you'd push off to get just a little speed, climb it like a ladder to get on, and off you'd go. Now I wonder what ever happened to that thing?
Yes, just a baby! That's great you built taller ones way back when. Thanks for commenting!
I to am looking forward to this build. When do we get to know which bike show you are going to?
Thanks, me too! I'm sure the show will be announced in the Spring....
i was hoping for you to build another 800 bike, so excited about it :)
Jim, I'm not sure what you mean by another "800 bike".... ?
Hello Paul, hello Mitch, happy new year to you. New year starts with a new project. Making hubs from the last century? Can't wait to see more😎
Yes, I do enjoy making these replica Antique bikes from all those years ago..
Great video Paul
Happy new year. Take care mate cheers
Thanks Tristan. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you and Mitch!
Happy New year to you as well....
I'm 5'8" and I have a hard time getting in and out of a 1928 model A roadster , Henry Ford was thin as a rail but he was close to 6 foot , I don't know how someone that tall could even drive that car , all of the model a's where like that , I think your right about the average size of people back then , maybe the stock market crash stunted their growth? 😅
Happy New Year, Paul and Mitch. Thanks for all the interesting videos in 2023. Les in UK 🇬🇧
Happy New Year Les! All the best to you in 2024.. Let's hope it's a Great Year!!
I had a schwinn whiZZer that had a 5 heart skip tooth sprocket , mid 50's I believe
Looking forward to seeing you work the lathe!
Yes, there will be lots of lathe and Mill.... 😄😄
Damn, I want a spoon break now. :(
woot🎉🎉 new years eve episode. happy new year !!!
Happy New Year guys.
Happy new year Paul & Mitch
Thank you. Happy New Year!
Happy new year!!
Happy new year!!
Cool project. Are you going with good old ball bearings? Or rollers? or tapered rollers (which are better at thrust loads)
