Screw Wallen, this is the only version that matters. This is Jason's song. The woman who saw him through is his now wife Amanda Shires who helped him get clean from alcohol and drugs. He's been clean ever since. This whole album, Southeastern is a classic. No filler. Much of the subject matter revolve around him cleaning up his life. If you want dark and sad - "Elephant" from this album is the one.
This is Jason Isbell’s version/original no can compare to him ever.
I mean yes, but Wallen does the cover as much justice as someone can do to an Isbell song. And I'm not even a big fan of his. Doesn't top Isbell, of course, but does a pretty good job!
Nice reaction! This song is an autobiographical ode to the woman, his now wife and sometimes bandmate Amanda Shires, who stood by him and help get sober from alcohol and drug addiction. Brilliant songwriter and underrated guitarist. Plays everything from alt country and Americana to straight rock. He’s worth a deep dive, especially if you’re a fan of deep songs with elite level lyrical craftsmanship.
Love Jason Isbell. So many amazing songs to choose from you can’t really go wrong. Also, his live performances are usually even better than the studio versions.

This. It’s sickening that the bigoted, mainstream hack Morgan Wallen got more attention for covering this song than Isbell did for living and writing it.
