  • There's more of these out there but I tend to like it when it's overdone on the reverb and slowed down a little more than people typically do. I feel like especially with this song and this version (the vinyl record one) it really amplifies that haunting feeling the song has, like the flag has some kind of curse to it, which I guess depending on how literally you interpret what a curse is, it has.
    The base for the flag in the background comes from here:

    I love this song becouse i can relate to it. Im an German East Prussian, there Are about 2000 left in the Former German territory, and despite being so important for German History we are forgotten by our goeverment and our Brothers from the West. In this song there is an lyric that says „did we become Foreign, to you my Brothers from the reich?“ Which i really relate to. I hope that soon being German in East prussia will not be considert weird. Hail to us

    The first fifteen seconds give me a dark depressing yet greatly done representation of the wolfenstein universe.

      This isn’t about the game wolfenstien. Many German border guards and Freikorps soldiers were former soldiers of the first weltkrieg. They were defeated, sad but still defended the German border.

      Apologies in advance for my terrible german, I haven't spoken German since high school.

    Although I am Polish I love this song. It is sad how one of the most peaceful borders in Europe between Poland and Germany became a breeding ground for ultranationalistic bullshit after partitions of Poland.

They're basically singing about how the Teutonic Order was excluded from the Holy Roman Empire since it grew too much in power and influence, but they know that even though they aren't part of the state, they still are as german as any State ior County of the HRE.

    A shame what happened to the empire. But I guess thats what happens when a country is ruled by incompetent monarchs

    • @thezappingseagull
      @thezappingseagull  5 місяців тому +2

      Personally I think the Empire was a bad idea to begin with. It tried too hard to be a nation, which is something the HRE never was or wanted to be. The empire, and subsequently the nazis wanted unity so badly they destroyed the cultural background that bound the various German people together. To some degree it was necessary, and unavoidable too. Standardising language is necessary to have a country-wide education system and you can't pour endless effort into preserving local traditions and identities, but overall I still feel like the attempts at unifying the Germans have resulted in a tragic loss of the cultural diversity that existed previously.
      And it wasn't just within the Empire either, having an empire based on unifying the German people itself makes having German minorities, and even worse, local majorities a risk to national security, leading to increased efforts to get rid of them like stimulating assimilation or emigration. That's actually why in the description I said the flag has a curse resting on it. Its original aim was to unify and protect the German people, but ultimately it turned out to be a bigger threat than anything else could ever have been.
