To celebrate that ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Waterloo" - April 6, 1974.
On the 50th anniversary of the victory, ABBA will be celebrated with a live gala evening on SVT (national swedish public television broadcaster).
The event will take place at Cirkus in Stockholm in front of an audience. Among other things, artists will perform ABBA's classic songs, but SVT does not yet want to say, which artists that will perform... (Source: TT News Agency - Sweden)

We also can never forget Gorel. Loved the beginning when the narration mentions that documentary could have been made about Gorel Hanser!
Gorel ran the day-to-day operations: admin, PR, regional label licensing, personal manager to core four.
She was hired by Stig in 1969. She had just turned 20. She learned the music management business fast!
Her promotions by Stig were rapid; office, secretary to Stig, VP Polar Music.
    Gorel ran Polar Music!
A huge percentage of ABBA fans have never heard of Gorel.
    Gorel was Stig's "right hand"
    Gorel still with ABBA today!

Absolutely! I have requested that for many years. I can't see the point in all the over priced vinyl editions they put out now, with no new content. I want to hear something that I haven't heard a thousand times before; like demos, alternate versions of songs etc.

    • @EddieG1888
      @EddieG1888 9 місяців тому +2

@@LapsangTe I suspect that ABBA in the studio were a lot like one of my other favourite bands, Steely Dan, in as much as they weren't overly wasteful with songs, and pretty much 99% of they wrote and recorded was released.
And, like SD their quality control is extremely high so something that we'd all love to hear an official release of such as Just Like That, B&B just refuse to sanction. I see nothing wrong with the track, but they just don't love it.
But at the very least, an Anthology TV programme over a few episodes, and an accompanying album of rarities, demos etc would be welcomed by the fans.

    • @LapsangTe
      @LapsangTe 9 місяців тому +3

@@EddieG1888 There are probably not that many unreleased songs around, but I'm sure that there are quite a lot of alternate versions in the archives, since Björn and Benny very often tried various tempos and arrangements until they found the right way to present a song. "The winner takes it all" was originally in a completely different tempo, and "Chiquitita" was originaly called "In the arms of Rosalita" and sung by Frida, to name but a few.

@@LapsangTe Agreed, there are a few tracks on the "ABBA Undeleted" compilation in the box set that I'd like to hear, Scaramouche is definitely one. The book "The Complete Recording Sessions" also details a few alternate mixes and little bits and piece that it would be interesting to hear.

So, I found the SVT broadcast.
-Very very good. It is almost like the Swedish society is ready to forgive Stig’s sins of being a driver, businessman and, quite frankly, the reason ABBA became what they became.
-Remember, it all ended badly with court cases, law suits and a lot of nasty accusations from all sides. So this programme, even though I do not speak Swedish, having lived through those years, I mostly knew what events or episodes of the ABBA years they were discussing.
-The footage switched often from very bad quality video, to not so bad film, to extremely well kept, almost pristine quality film. So who did the editing had a very skilful way of switching in and out almost flawlessly.
-Again, I think this was a missed opportunity not to broadcast a dual audio soundtrack. Universal owns most of the music, so I couldn’t see why they’d not press for an English version seeing that perhaps somewhere is awake at the wheel at universal to know us fans are all going to watch this anyway.
-So, all in all, a lot of what I saw, I was aware of, a lot of course I didn’t understand (hope that is rectified soon).
-This has definitely been an effort to put everything behind them, to perhaps correct the record and to clean everything up nicely for the history books.
-I really felt very uneasy in the early 80s as to the direction ABBA took, what with Kuben, Monarch Bicycles and those weird Russian oil deals, I really thought that those all were huge mistakes.
-I might upload the BBC Money Programme feature from around the mid 1980s that I recorded to Betamax.

The royalty dispute was not all four vs Stig.
It was three separate filings in Stockholm district court, which is public info.
Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha each hired their own counsel and filed in Stockholm district court:
      Benny v Stig
      Bjorn v Stig
      Agnetha v Stig
Frida was not part of the royalty dispute, nor the ugly exchange of words.
It is very important to note the
close relationship that Frida had with Stig and his family, since day one and goes on today.
A few years back, Marie (Stig's daughter) and Tomas' son got married. It was reported in the papers/media. Frida attended the wedding. I think she was the only core four ABBA member to attend.
      RockNRoll Hall of Fame:.
      2010
Frida and Benny accepted their awards and each gave a speech.
Frida in her own way, put Stig on the RockNRoll Hall of Fame.
      Her words -- paraphrasing:
      - Stig was 5th member
      - Stig was a great guy
      - Without Stig, we are not standing here tonight

interesting thoughts. Wasn't it also the case that Frida did not 'need' to take Stig to court because she was the only abba member to sell the majority of her shares in Polar at the beginning of the eighties, after her divorce from Benny, when she, seemingly, wanted to clean house so to speak?

@@annedonker4795Frida sold her shares first, yes, after she moved to London. Then the other three sold their shares a few years later.
None of them owned shares in Polar Music during the royalty dispute.
Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha were going after back royalties. They apparently could not establish wrong doing by Stig, hence they all settled out of court. No details ever disclosed.

      As Stikkan said...
Paraphrasing: that marriage was never right.
The observant fan could pick-up on issues based on the lack of flirtatious nature compared to Frida and Benny and in certain interviews.
Remember all those European tabloids about Benny and Frida's flirting on stage, interviews, etc... They were in love and it came across.
With Agnetha and Bjorn, early on they had moments like Frida and Benny, but it soon changed.

Stig deserves as much attention as the core four. He is the man that planted the seeds for ABBA. And much much much more!
Frida is the one that essentially put Stig in the RockNRoll Hall of Fame in 2010 by her kind words and praise as she told the world that without Stig, they are not standing here (RockNRoll Hall of Fame) tonight.
Always great respect for Frida for giving credit to Stig for his part in their enormous success.
The man that signed The West Bay Singers/Hootenanny Singers in 1963, Bjorn's group. Also the year that two of the core four members first met. Frida & Bjorn.
Stig also the man who hired Gorel Johnsen Hanser,1980). She ran Polar Music administration, regional record label licensing, PR, and more. Today still working with ABBA, Benny Andersson Orchestra, Frida's manager and Frida's close friend.
Gorel started at Polar after just turning 20 years old. Stig supported and encouraged that she could do things she thought was beyond her capabilities. Gave her the confidence to succeed in music management and run Polar Music/ABBA operation.
Stig hired Bjorn and Benny after his business partner, friend, house producer passed away.
Stig went after Anni-Frid after Frida left the foursome after the disaster -- winter 1970/71 cabaret shows. Stig worked to get Frida onboard Polar Music as a solo artist (Frida with EMI (1967-72) at the time, and to convince Frida to be part of a foursome - pop group, which was a comedown artistically for Frida. Singing pop songs are more lucrative, but she preferred the more challenging and sophistication of the vocal centric genres.
Stig and Frida had special bond. Both came from nothing.
    RIP Stig. (1931-1997)
    A great man. A legend.

The Stikkan documentary is so wonderfully made, and quite moving in the end. Unfortunately none of the Abba's are interviewed for it. Abba needs a documentary like that, warts and all, but if they didn't want to be interviewed for this documentary, it is unlikely they would authorise a documentary of themselves. But you never know, hopefully year 2024 will give us wonderful surprises.

It looks to me like the clip of abba in 1970 singing together was shot on videotape and then telerecorded onto film later as I noticed that it had fragments belonging to both mediums especially the soft shadows. Looks just like the telerecordings of 60s doctor who
I also think the Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie clip was lifted from an ABBA documentary from 1999 specifically from this clip. ua-cam.com/video/bhSWrISUoGE/v-deo.html
It was great to see that so much of ABBA on film still exists in it's original film form in the archive. Although watching the documentary it looks like the original films prints from the Abba-daba-doo documentary now only survive as video tape dubs judging from all the videotape artifacts.
It's also great to see SVT have the original video tape of the Abba's birthday song for Stikkan in 1981 with the opening, also showing ABBA entering the stage that was cut off on the VHS dubs I've seen on UA-cam.

    Re: royalty disagreements
The documentery lumps in ABBA (core four) vs. Stig.
    It was actually:
    Benny v Stig
    Bjorn v Stig
    Agnetha v Stig
Frida did not participate. She did not hire counsel. Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha all hired counsel.
As the documentary states. It never went to court. All was settled. No fault found with either party.
The royalty dispute details and the resulting settlement have never been made public. Just speculation by media and fans.
Important to note is the close relationship that Frida had with Stig and Stig's family. They all adored Frida. She is like an extended family member.
The relationship between Stig and Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha became strained during and after the royalty dispute.
During the dispute, which was a major news story in Swedish media, Stig was asked who his favorite (core four) was. He answered the question. He said Frida!
Why! Loyal. Does not talk negatively about anybody. He used a Swedish word that translates into "straight back". A word/phrase in Swedish that is used for a person of high character.
Marie, Stig's daughter and her husband Thomas (singer & ABBA b/u singer during concerts) are close with Frida.
Frida, I believe is the only member of the core four that attended Marie and Thomas' sons wedding some years back.
Marie also produced a tribute (DVD) to Anni-Frid Lyngstad's solo career and works.
Frida's album, 'Deep Breaths' (english translation) was pit on Anderson Records. Stig's daughters record label.
In the end, Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha in their own way settled professional and personal issues and acknowledged Stig's influence on their huge success and thanked him.
Publicly, it was Frida, that told the world in 2010, RockNRoll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a bit about Stikkan 'Stig' Anderson:
    Paraphrasing --
    - Stig was a great guy
    - Stig was 5th ABBA member
    - Without Stig, we are not standing here tonight
In Frida's own way, she put Stig in the RockNRoll Hall of Fame!
Her words are eched in music history now.
