have to say, nice work San Mateo for screwing up Bart in San Rafael, imagine how convenient it would be to take the Smart train to the ferry terminal and Bart to Oakland and/or San Francisco.
They’re called gauntlet tracks. They allow wider freight trains to pass the platforms without bumping into them and scraping them up. When SMART train service ends in the evening, all the switches at the gauntlet tracks switch to routing trains along the outer gauntlet track, so freight trains can run along the line overnight, and vice versa in the morning.
Like the UFO hovering just over the tracks in front of the train! Yes i was on it The train was quiet ,comfortable & smooth . But the price for a 6oz cup of coffee was a little steep! Great ride
You oon't have to double-track the whole thing anyway. One or a few passing track sections are enough to provide nearly as much flexibility as a full double track.
Jeffrey Baker not necessarily, for example currently if a train leaves northbound from San Rafael at 08:00, it will be until 08:30 till the next train pulls in because the next passing section is all the way up after Novato Hamilton. Maybe they need more passing sections.
11 minutes is not too bad. The existing bus service takes half an hour, and only comes once an hour. It looks like some time could be squeezed out of this by not operating at a walking pace between haystack and downtown petaluma. Why is it so slow there?
You live in a stupid area then. My area has plenty of great bus service. So what on the 101 bus if it takes an hour? Leave your house earlier, idiot. Fuck your train service. I hate Smart. Ugly train.
@SmartTrainRailfanProductions So far, 150 which is route 70 cancelled the weekend service, 101 service from Santa Rosa has no 5am, 6am, or 8am bus service, and that's RUSH HOUR, and two 101 buses going back North cancelled, there is just route 72 from Sonoma, no more 74 or 76. Really sad way for a train to pick up service like this and put the Golden Gate Transit out of service. Golden Gate Transit has existed for years, now this train is going to ruin it.
Just north of the Petaluma River Bridge is a stretch of passing track where SMART trains in opposite directions pass each other. There are also crossings at grade, of streets in that area. Also, in daily operation, often a train must slow or even stop to allow a train passing in the opposite direction to enter the passing track and for the track switches to operate. It is all done according to Federal Railroad Administration rules for that type of operation, that limit speed for safety reasons.
Every train is a drain on taxpayer dollars, none of them operate without subsidies. The sales tax will be extended; eventually, SMART will just have to put more of your tax dollars toward paying interest on loans that they could have refinanced with a more long term revenue stream. All that was accomplished was more money went to banks to service down debt; it was a real victory for the common man.
The Smart facebook site has unjustly banned my son from accessing their site due to him exposing Smart for unfair pricing in the zones, IE 25 round trip from Santa Rosa to San Rafael whereas it's 16.50 or 16.00 on Golden Gate Transit, FACT. Golden Gate Transit employees and the agency is in danger of being put out of business by this train. By the time the train gets to Novato, it's packed and as an 80 year old man and veteran of Fort Miley, nobody would give up their seat so needless to say, I'm sticking to driving unfortunately with a useless clipper card. Yeah, a clipper card, no cash, no token, none of what Bart, Cal, Ace, VTA, or other train services, a clipper card that can be hacked into your bank account. The traffic last 2 days according to my son is just as bad as ever Southbound, though Northbound MIGHT be improving actually in Novato Narrows, but still making people pay 25 dollars from Sonoma into San rafael, and of course it included 2 dollars parking and a poor scheudle, IE if you don't catch your train by say 6am from Novato, got to wait 2 hours and needless to say, my son wound up taking the bus for it's cheaper then Smart. ONce again, the Smart facebook site saw fit to not want to listen to an honest counter opinion of their flawed service that Novato doesn't need, but was forced on us.
Bus services in the Bay Area are slowed by traffic. SMART doesn't have to deal with traffic. It glides by jam-ups on 101, like I saw last Thursday when me and my parents went up that way. And since they have priority, not even Northwestern Pacific freight trains slow them down. That's why Golden Gate Transit is in danger. Not because of pricing, but convenience. And don't give me that "SMART doesn't go across the bay" bull. A future extension will take it to Larkspur Landing so passengers can connect with the ferries. As for capacity, that's simple: once Caltrain electrifies, SMART can acquire some of their F40s and gallery cars for use during rush hour. Not only would it increase capacity and ensure you get a seat (especially if they convert the bike cars back into regular cars), it would also save some classic equipment from scrap.
I guarantee you that when Golden Gate Transit ceases to exist like the Grayhound was taken out of service from stopping at Novato over 30 years ago, my son would rather ride his bike to work 12 miles and back. The future extension is a joke, walk like what a mile to your boat? What bus service is there in Larkspur? is there a bus from larkspur to San Francisco? There is no such thing as teamwork between Smart because Smart is out for themselves, they don't want the bus service. They already kicked out the taxis. They took away one parking space already and will condemn 3 others by Best Buy to put in the cheap tracks. One day, my son will be protesting the train when he stands by the tunnel in San Rafael.
New York, there was something called a TOKEN to ride the subway, and a majority of trains charge MONEY that you put into a meter. Smart is a joke. Tell me where and how the traffic is improved? Southbound is heavy from 6am to around 10am from Pepper Road to Olympali Park and from DeLong to Corte Madara...how is that improvment when traffic in Petaluma USED TO clear out before 7:30am and it was heavy from DeLong to San Rafael? How is paying 19 dollars full fare from Santa Rosa cheaper your jackass? Even if the bus service was taken away from the Smart, my son would ride his bike 12 miles to and from work. He'd never take the butt ugly train.
have to say, nice work San Mateo for screwing up Bart in San Rafael, imagine how convenient it would be to take the Smart train to the ferry terminal and Bart to Oakland and/or San Francisco.
God ikr
What does San Mateo have to do with Bart being extended to the north bay?
cool POV video, greetings from New Jersey..
no sound :.(
Why have two tracks at the stations that overlap the other rails? You can't get more than one train in at a time so what purpose does it serve?
Freight trains are wider so they need the other track to not crash into the station

Thanks, that makes all the sense in the world. Running the gauntlet...great
Cool! A gauntlet track! or two!!
Like the UFO hovering just over the tracks in front of the train! Yes i was on it The train was quiet ,comfortable & smooth . But the price for a 6oz cup of coffee was a little steep! Great ride
Shouldn't there be two tracks - one northbound , one southbound - the whole way?
Costs. If enough people ride it later on, they might double track it.

That's why it's called DUMB then, stupid, to wait 2 hours to take a train, then it's full and you get bumped?
@@walterschivo9123 dude what is your problem, not everything is perfect brother
Who said this train was slow? it is moving along very well!
This is the fastest segment of the entire route, maximum speed 79mph per Federal Railroad Administration rules for the class of track and signaling.
ok, but I do not consider 79 mph slow
Deer at 5:08!
I like bicycle path that they promise to build
You should have saw the tracks before they fixed them wow were they in horrible condition
They still are, using that cheap material instead of fine quality lumber.
No actually concrete plates are better and more stronger. Those plates are concrete
If only they had this sort of service in sacramento valley..

Click the 2X on the video settings, it will speed up the train a bit to Petaluma!!! just kiddin

Where's teh promised bike trail that was supposed to be along the tracks to Petaluma?
It would be nice to know the speed of the train. Will they have space for the bike trail?
gardenman3 top speed between Novato San Marin and Petaluma Downtown (the journey pictured in the video) is 79 MPH
No bike trail at all.
Grr, should be 110 or 125 MPH, American trains are so pathetic.
@@GenRommel This is made from older rails for almost no money except converting it to a passenger infrastructre. We don't have that kind of money :)
@@GenRommel 79 mph is the maximum speed permitted by Federal Railroad Administration rules for this class of track and traffic control.
Some narration would be nice
They almost hit a deer!

I am so glad measure I got voted down. This is the train from nowhere to nowhere and a drain of tax payers dollars.
