Very Good Kev ive just inherited a ZX9R 98 plate with 69K on the clock I'm looking at doing a rebuild and this is invaluable. Thanks again.!!!

Hi Kev, you have your cylinders back to front, your No1 is No4 !!

You are correct, it's actually 1-2-3-4 Left to Right, as it happens. That is fairly unusual as number 1 cylinder is usually at the chain end on most engines. As I have numbered everything the wrong way round, it's not too big a deal as I just need to make sure that everything goes back where it came from! Good shout though! 👍

on the cylinder head, it,s a good idea to replace the vacuum blanking bolts in cylinders 2 & 3 with the hose connectors , as on cylinders 1 & 4, with a short piece of vacuum hose, it makes carb balancing a hell of a lot easier !!

Yeah, already had that thought myself! Good idea! ;)

I can’t wait to see how you get the cylinder barrel back on, jiggling four sets of piston rings…..

I know right! That’ll be a challenge, the bottom of the barrels are kinda bell-mouthed for want of a better term, plus it should be easier with ring compressors. You’ll see in a future episode how I manage it! 👌🏻

@@KevsShed I used bolt head hose clamps for the piston rings. Most genuine piston ring compressors are way too tall to fit underneath the cylinder barrels.

Do you mean Jubilee clips? Like these? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-Steel-Hose-Clips-Pipe-Clamps-jubilee-type-304ss-British-Type-/265263590121?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m2548.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

@@KevsShed Jubilee-clips will probably do the trick also. I used hose clamps with a bolt fastener. These clamps have a perfectly smooth ring that actually fits a few millimetres inside the cylinder barrels. As the clamps go inside the cylinder, you have to open them ever so slightly, and push them down in small steps so that you don't loose the compression on the rings. Push the block down as you slide the clamps down on the pistons. I managed to get both piston rings on all pistons inside the barrels. It's a very fiddly process, and you need some sort of device to keep the rings compressed, since you don't have four hands to hold the rings in, and another two hands to push the block down... I think that I still have the clamps, and I can send them to you if you wannu give them a try. no charge

@@KevsShed The correct tool for installing the pistons is called "Piston Ring Clamp / Compressor 70 - 75mm Classic Motorcycles", look it up on the bay. I tried to post a link, but my comment got deleted... The point is that the ring compressor needs to fit inside the barrels a few mm, or else the rings wont go in.

Howdy from the U.S. Mate. I love your show. Thankyou for sharing your work with us.
I need your help, and ideas.
    I have a 95 triumph 900 sprint.
Very impressed with this well built ride. Here's my questions.
I bought some add on mufflers....but I can't figure out how to remove the old ones, and I'll need to use the same pipes to attach the new mufflers to.....your thoughts? Or do you have a show showing how to remove them??
Plus, the one thing I DO NOT like about riding this bike...is having to lean so far forward to the handle bars. So....I want to raise them up, and out a couple of inches to give me some relief. Any ideas....and exact parts (risers) for this bike......Thx man

may I ask, do you really need to take out the engine to replace the cylinder head gasket? mine i think is leaking oil mix with coolant on the radiator.
