Just made one on my lunch break today. Piece of cake. My "hotel key" was actually my old Blockbuster Video card. When I open the blue cap, it says LOCKBUST in the bottom.
Hey GRANT, a trick for making STRONGER EPOXY.. It works in fairly small amounts because it sets up much faster.. Take a piece of cardboard the thickness of a matchbook,,,,, if it's a small job, use a torn off square of a matchbook,,,, Put a dab of mixed epoxy on the cardboard square and hold a lite match under it just close enough to heat but not burn,,,,, It will warm up and then suddenly turn to liquid,,, the dab of epoxy will suddenly drop to water like stuff but when it goes between two things, will bond 5-6x stronger,,, I learned it in a jewelry job, working with stones............. thanks for the great videos and ideas...
Itzm3rkyboy I thought this was some kind of container FOR bottle caps. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought, 'It can't be a container MADE out of bottle caps. Who would do that instead of just using the bottles?'
matrixphijr Like a backpact that you don't have room in for a soda bottle, this is also more inconspicuous. Plus, you know how many boxes of matchs you could fit in a soda bottle? A LOT. Which is cool. I might have to try that.
Awesome video! I'm a fisherman and this idea will help my storage for fishing tackle like weights and hooks! If you can please make some fishing hacks!
Today we're camping out in the middle of nowhere, so I got up early and parked beside a gas station with wifi to release this video. And yes, we are using these containers on the trip. I'll be back to read comments on Monday! For now, I'm going back to camp to make a fire. See ya!
You could also use much larger bottles or jars, like plastic peanut butter jars, to make larger double containers.Extremely useful hack, with a lot of possibilities.
Me and my dad made these. We used waterproof epoxy meant for jet ski repair and other things. And we also used his old MasterCard to make them. It was perfect for anything and it's so convenient! Thanks Grant!
Great little container for storing emergency fishing gear for survival kit, keeps it all together can fit sm, med, lg hooks (9 altogether) split shot sinkers and 20 ft of line. Thanks! for the tip
That's gonna be hard to strike in a 1cm square... I'd put a longer strip on a string leash. Or build that container with bigger caps than soda bottle, more like vitamin bottle caps
You know, I started thinking when he said to epoxy the little bottles together as a variation of the container, and I may have gotten an idea: What if you do this with clear orange pill bottles? 1. They're plastic, so they won't break like the glass bottles might. 2. Depending on if you cut it or not, it can hold a comparatively large amount of whatever you put in it. 3. Unlike the soda bottle version, it's childproof. That could be beneficial seeing as how it's likely you'll be storing medicine or random potentially dangerous chemicals in it. Yes? No?
Why even bother when an orange pill bottle does the exact same thing, no need to cut it or epoxy it or anything. Unless you need a super small bottle I guess. We used to use film containers when that was a thing.
Just wanted to share my "upgrade" to the 'Soda Cap Container' project. After completing the basic container as described in your video, I continued by turning it into a salt n pepper shaker. I trimmed down a second set of caps leaving just the inner 15mm of the caps. Then I created perforations in them and inserted them into the throat of the the 'Soda Cap Container'. Now, not only can the containers hold salt n pepper, but you can shake away without worrying about spilling the entire contents!
This is awesome. On a daily basis I take two pills that keep me alive, and for safety's sake I have a day's worth of pills in pill boxes all over the place. Car, bedside table, backpack, etc. Problem is, the pill boxes aren't waterproof, and stuff gets ruined just by damp air getting in. These are perfect replacements! I've got a reason to save bottles now, haha.
I love this idea, for everyone else who may or may not have thought about it, take a look around at any other plastic bottles that you think the opening and depth of threads are bigger or more suitable for what you would need a container for. I made the exact container out of wider mouthed bottles and fount that one side was perfect for char cloth and the other was great for gum stick wrappers, just a thought.
Try using "Shoe Goo" or "Goop" adhesive in place of the epoxy; it's at least as strong, flexible, and lots easier to use. I love the stuff and it's an important part of my own survival/camping kit.
A year before this video, I hid a geocache container simmilar to this one. My variation was not waterproof, so the container git wet, but now I see how it should be correctly done. Thanks, Grant!
You could also paint the spacer with little pictures of what is inside so when the container is empty, you’ll see the image and never forget which side is which. Plus it would look cool
I just made one. I used something called Gorilla Glue, it expands some, so it should help insure that it is sealed but you also will have to clamp it pretty good, I used a wood clamp. Also, I used the bottle cap ring as a spacer between the two halves, that way I didn't have to have a straight cut, though at least one side has to be pretty close. Thanks for the idea!
James West I took a variation on this that makes it a little easier to make. When cutting the top off, don't cut so close to the ring, I was able to cut right before the flare on a Pepsi bottle and it works great. I roughed up the glue contact areas with some sandpaper, but instead of making a disk to go bewteen the 2 caps, glue a cap to the non-threaded end of the bottle top. You can either keep it single or rough up the glued cap and glue it to another capsule. I have some pictures of this process, but I'm looking to make a video soon on how I did it. Thanks for the inspiration Mr Thompson!
michael fernandez I bought mine at Wal-Mart, but any hardware store should carry it. Or even Amazon: www.amazon.com/4-oz-Original-Gorilla-Glue/dp/B0001GAYRC. From the few of these I've made, I've noticed you have to be careful with the expansion of GG, a little goes a long way. It also is kind of "foamy" when it expands, so I would not use this glue if you were making it for a food container.
A tip: This is great for shampoo and showercream for the gym :). I put a loop on mine, so i keep my locker key on it when im hitting the showers or the sauna
Love your soda bottle hacks. Just a quick note about glue: The absolute best glue for the plastic they make these bottles from is called PL Premium Construction Adhesive. We use it to glue soda bottles end-to-end to make HUGE water rockets. Nothing works better!
I like this project. I have make it one and i like to try different caps to make! Thanks for the idea. I have bad weekend because i have nothing to do. With this project i can have fun and learn how to use my tools. Thanks!
I used plastic cards left on top of Wal-Mart gas pumps as the separator. When I glued two bottles together, I found that gluing the cap ends together made a stronger bond. Great Idea! I like to repurpose things, when I can.
Old credit card, some sort of thin plastic mat you might find in ALDI or other supermarket canvas bags, pretty much anything that is thin, very plasticy, and strong. Also it needs to bond to your glue or epoxy.
I used smart water bottles and hot glue. I also used my Swiss Army knife and Leatherman, as well as 150 g sand paper and a regular clamp. It is water proof. I threw it in my pool and held it down with that leaf grabber net, and it was all dry. Had a paper towel lit in no time. Keep making survival related life hacks, they just might save someone's life!
Pharmacy pill bottles would work well and are only a little larger. They're not as waterproof as these, but they'll still keep things dry in the rain or falling into water for a brief time. I'm sure you could take the time to make them more water resistant and they're already ready made. The dual chambered cap containers could be nice for making things where both sides mix together to produce a desired effect, though.
It will be forced flat when you glue the tops together. Or clamp it between 2 metal plates and apply heat and make it flat. Or find a square jar. 2 if you need a larger container.
Hey Grant, i am from India and i am truly amazed by watching your creations. As a request can you do a video on making a bicycle chassis, i will be really pleased to see a reply and the video as my best friend's birthday is right around the corner..

Ideia genial! Ótima forma de aproveitar garrafas pet. Suas tampas são excelentes para , como no exemplo do vídeo, serem muito úteis para guarda de comprimidos, etc.
near the end of the video you show that they hold as much as those glass containers, why not just use those?.... don't even need to make anything, done...
This works so well!! I put my sugar in the caps then hide them in a good spot and my friend packs some greens and switches them out!!! I love Benjamin Franklins!
Sorry, I see NO use for this while hiking/survival situation. I see this only as a waste of time. Please give me 3 examples for its use (while hiking/survival).. ShadowBlade And in a survival situation i of course, will have 2 plastic bottles and something to cut them up, as well as epoxy. If I'm in a survival situation I'm probably more likely to have a lighter in my pocket then a shitty bottle-cap-container containing matches or gunpowder or whatever the fuck that black shit was.
Epoxy can be cleaned off your hands before it cures with alcohol. You can add a small amount of alcohol to the epoxy and make it into a clear paint. It slows the cure so let it stand overnight after painting. The clear epoxy is safe on styrofoam, paper, epp foam, wood and fabrics but won't stick to nylon. I like an old nylon cutting board to mix on. Just pop off the excess when it cures and the board is ready to use again. Epoxy is temperature sensitive, so if it's cold, it won't cure very well. The clear epoxy is kinda smelly, like a skunk. Use in ventilated area.
So awesome! I'm always been a huge fan of your channel and videos and i always share them to my other friends in the world, I wish you continue making more and also can you make out of something, like for small container boxes or other stuff to put in, since this video is so cool in camping or in other situation. I wish I have one of your hand made creation just to make a trophies in my room. More power to your channel and never stop doing what you like most..
I use these ALL THE TIME! I sometimes have to carry my meds with me (bad back) and this is way easier than carrying the clunky bottle with me all day. Morning dose in one side, lunchtime dose in the other side ;)
i actually made that! tipp for everybody that didn't think of that: if you use two of those wide ice tea or juice caps you will will have even more volumina inside!
these are great! I have one that I keep in my pocket at work so i can keep ibuprofen in them (I have a bum leg). that way i don't have to pack the whole bottle in my pocket. I unscrew one end for the morning dose and the other end for another at lunch
I would like to suggest E6000 glue for this project. It's inexpensive (about $3 for a large tube) and readily available (Wal-mart). It is a strong, epoxy-type glue that sets up in just a couple of minutes. We used it to set rhinestones on dance costumes. This stuff ROCKS!
Just made one on my lunch break today. Piece of cake. My "hotel key" was actually my old Blockbuster Video card. When I open the blue cap, it says LOCKBUST in the bottom.

NICE! Now I have a place to store my bottle cap collection!
Can't you just put your stuff in the soda bottles?
Itzm3rkyboy I thought this was some kind of container FOR bottle caps. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought, 'It can't be a container MADE out of bottle caps. Who would do that instead of just using the bottles?'
captian swagnuggets The purpose is to have a small container that fits places a soda bottle doesn't.
***** Like what, though? I can put a soda bottle in my pocket.

Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" i will use this for some cocane joke
Awesome McGuyvering.

I got my own and I love it and I can change the caps with other caps
You could also use much larger bottles or jars, like plastic peanut butter jars, to make larger double containers.Extremely useful hack, with a lot of possibilities.

Nice :)

Great project Grant! In addition to epoxy, could you also use the SonicDad secret weapon - hot glue? :)
-Ritchie
Indeed it can Ritchie! 2:32 .. and thanks! :)
Wow SonicDadDotCom watchs Grand Thompson too! I love both your channels! Both interesting and the projects blows my mind
he said you could in the video
SonicDadDotCom yes
Wow
These old style videos really give me a sense of nostalgia
That's a great idea right there! I do a ton of camping and can certainly make use of this.
Great little container for storing emergency fishing gear for survival kit, keeps it all together can fit sm, med, lg hooks (9 altogether) split shot sinkers and 20 ft of line. Thanks! for the tip
Maybe with the match container, glue a striker inside the bottom cap so it's accessible
Smart idea
+obsolete11 Dude thats smart
Omg yas
Or you can get strike anywhere matches
That's gonna be hard to strike in a 1cm square... I'd put a longer strip on a string leash. Or build that container with bigger caps than soda bottle, more like vitamin bottle caps
I have successfully used a PVC pipe cutting (the plier looking ones) to cut the tops off. Works super slick and nice clean cuts too.
Thank you! Was looking for a classroom easy option for my students :)
So much room for activities!!

Hello I'm from Germany and I like your videos so much. I've made the Cap-Container and the can-candle and they are great. Go on!

is there anything you can use as a substitute for a hotel key
yes if you use your imagination.
Old credit card, some sort of thin plastic mat you might find in ALDI or other supermarket canvas bags, pretty much anything that is thin, very plasticy, and strong. Also it needs to bond to your glue or epoxy.
I used the flat part of the bottle it self works great
you can use anything that is the same material and shape.
Chuck E. Cheese card xD
I used smart water bottles and hot glue. I also used my Swiss Army knife and Leatherman, as well as 150 g sand paper and a regular clamp. It is water proof. Hey which part of the Swiss Army knife did you use? The blade or the saw?
what if you don't have a hacksaw and benchpliers
good luck to you, my friend. Actually I don't either ;-;
You can cut bottles with a knife(serrated is easier)
I have an old pyro made of solid bench vice. I have a hack saw too, THANKS PAPA!!!! May he R.I.P.
Bread knife and your hands
Apparently someone here tried the pvc cutter pliers and they worked great!
You are the most sensible and genuis man on earth! I never wouldve thought of that!
Actually the people who are going to built this are only drugdealer :D
They use zip lock coin sized baggies because no work is involved

Very Nice Project, I hope you do more of these. I like projects that recycles or reuse our junk, also it helps the environment.
enough for a couple buds ;)
Cool, I often do the same with wide mouth plastic drink bottles to hold larger things but I never thought about doing the divider.
If you do not have a card, cut a circle out of the side of one of the bottles.
But then, depends what bottle you use, it will be curved
It will be forced flat when you glue the tops together. Or clamp it between 2 metal plates and apply heat and make it flat. Or find a square jar. 2 if you need a larger container.
Very true
You are genius man
Abat and Rich I know I am (!)
what about larger juice jugs ? They have bigger caps and necks ! I am making some now . Thanks for the idea.

I kbow i am not grant but you can it is so cool. The slow mo guys did it
BizzFeed did
Check out SloMoGuys video on it.
This is really cool! I'm having some problems when I tried it though, I couldn't get a clean cut and it started to annoy me.
im about to make this with my dad!
+Jade Jones Cool :D
+Jade Jones For best results, use two dads, just make sure you sand the ends down enough to make a flat surface.
Hey Grant, i am from India and i am truly amazed by watching your creations. As a request can you do a video on making a bicycle chassis, i will be really pleased to see a reply and the video as my best friend's birthday is right around the corner..
what else can u use for sandpaper
your bum
A rock maybe?
BOSS nail file
I smooth mine down on the driveway surface. But I use a slightly different method for making these. Search for "darick geocaching micro" to see how I make them.
I have seen all your videos and they are mind blowing you should be on tv!!!!!!!
Ah perfect for my weed!
Mee too 😂
Will the real slim shady please stand up
Lol joke or nah?
Kyle Kelley no joke lmao
LITERALLY THE REASON WHY I FOUND THIS VIDEO
I m a kid so can u make something thats cool but easy for kids
Jenny Park I would be too big wouldn't it?
This is a great fun thing to make that keeps your stuff safe and ready to use. Love it!!!. And great idea grant!!
Dude, you pretty much made a pill or a pot container
They're also very useful for geocache containers!!
The whole video i was thinking to my self, geocaching.
Absolutely me too until he Said its perfect for geocaching and i was like yeah thats what i told you Grant ! :D
Totally gunna make a geocache by my house with this
the shows that you make are AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

near the end of the video you show that they hold as much as those glass containers, why not just use those?.... don't even need to make anything, done...
He was just giving an example of how much they can hold
becouse you can make them with two pockets and maybe some people don't have those
because then it's be double the amount and be a bit more organized. also it looks nice. also space.
Glass can break.
This works so well!! I put my sugar in the caps then hide them in a good spot and my friend packs some greens and switches them out!!! I love Benjamin Franklins!

YAY

Boyscouts ftw
i did it with soldering iron to melt the plastic and rubber bands with petroleum jelly to prevent water from going inside

NviForce its useful due to its small size and resistance to weather, and you could store other stuff in there, like pills

make a video "How to make a waterproof phone"

Use NeverWet on it

awesome. the best part of ur projects is that the stuff is made with items which are readily available at home. good work! keep going!!! :)
I tried this with a pocket knife. It took a long time, but it was fun!
U can also do it with Gatorade bottle lids.
i actually made that! tipp for everybody that didn't think of that: if you use two of those wide ice tea or juice caps you will will have even more volumina inside!
how about a plastic magnifying glass separating the two caps to harness the sun power for a fire lighter? great vid Grant
I like the way you use your brain knowledge like MaGaver the old tv show. You are a genius.
Incredible! No fair! How'd you end up with so much brains and creativity??!!! :D. Surely the new Newton is before us! Are you a scientist?
you can do the same with pill bottles its bigger, water proof, and floats
I know you did this a while ago but if you used a bai bottle tops so you have more space, love the videos keep it up!
I would glue one side onto the card before cutting the card. a smaller circle might not seperate the two sides well
these are great! I have one that I keep in my pocket at work so i can keep ibuprofen in them (I have a bum leg). that way i don't have to pack the whole bottle in my pocket. I unscrew one end for the morning dose and the other end for another at lunch
also, i didn't have a hotel key, but the lid of an ice cream bucket work well too
I would like to suggest E6000 glue for this project. It's inexpensive (about $3 for a large tube) and readily available (Wal-mart). It is a strong, epoxy-type glue that sets up in just a couple of minutes. We used it to set rhinestones on dance costumes. This stuff ROCKS!
That is the most useful thang anybody has ever made with bottle caps!!
ooh what a cool idea grant! ill definetley hide a few geocaches like this
