Other than the German / British background history, these houses are very well designed to suit the local climate such as: 1) Pitch roof with overhanging eaves takes care of the torrential rain. 2) the high ceiling & huge space between ceiling and roof takes care of natural insulation of the equatorial heat from the sun and keep the house cool 3) vents at the top of wall provides good natural ventilation when windows are closed when it rains 4) the veranda provide a chill out area and also prevent rain from entering the house. 5) the house is elevated from the ground to prevent flood waters to enter the house and it also keeps the house cool.
@@farhanzaini8324 you are absolutely right. boa constrictors live in south america. the most fun was getting them out of the house. record was 10 policemen and a garbage can and a very sleepy python in the can.
0:30 - the British "imported"? Nonsensical ah this ah pek. import from where? The British looked to local Malayan architecture and sensibilities. Inspired by traditional Malay kampong houses and fused with other elements from Britain and other colonies.
Kevin Kwan's "Crazy Rich Asians" series sure brings these beautiful homes to life. I'm here because I JUST HAD to see for myself what these gems looked like.
I wish when foreigners move into other countries, starting from the colonial era, foreigners don’t change or name street names into their own. This is disrespectful, this same thing happened in my home country and thank god, this has been banished, and we continue to do so. Keep the local traditions.
My ex boss used to live in one of these, i think in the late 90s it was about 12k per month, again i don't know what kind of floor area, because there's many types of these black and whites. Beautiful however.
Though I would love to own one … I wouldn’t want to live in one. With all those open doors and windows … Can you imagine the vermin esp rodents and lizards. No thanks. “Nice to see… not nice to eat”.
Honestly why are these buildings even preserved? Other than being reserved sites, shouldn't we be planning out how to better utilise the space. Think about it, those houses the land can probably house up to 30,000 people, and that's just the Edgeware Rd cluster.

Had this video suggested by UA-cam right after parliament debates on ridout b&w bungalow 😂
Black and white houses are beautiful. I enjoy this episode. Well done : )
35:33 this Gallop house is another architectural wonder, … so spacious, high ceiling, long verandah, greenery.
Really enjoyable series! Looking forward to more :)
Im coming here after Shanmugam dan Vivian controversy
i stayed over there 30 years ago. the nice thing of those houses back then was that you had a lot of boa constrictors sneaking in at night.
I think you meant reticulated pythons.

@@acquisitium That must be quite an experience.
@@farhanzaini8324 we even had photos of it and back then(late 80's) we did not make that much photos

Great series. Brief and enjoyable scene.
UA-cam algorithm recommended this clip to me after much exposure to news of ridout road. And ads served by Livspace, how apt 😂

Beautiful love black and white will do in Caribbean💕
Start watching from 3:05 for a walk through of David’s black n white bungalow. It is an architectural marvel, and tastefully decorated too.
such a beautiful beautiful black and white houses, Malacca have these type of houses as well.
Many of these mansions have fallen into disrepair
Nice algo
Theese buildings are actually of German decent that swept over to Britin when the first German settlers (Saxons) inhabited the Island.
Cool fact I didn’t know this 👍🏼
Very nice house
Natural ventilation is the best. Modern age ACs are a curse, cause of most musculoskeletal disorders/conditions.

Beautiful house wonder how much it’s worth
There’s one for sale near Holland Village for SGD 20 million.

Why am I watching this? Ohh... Ridout 😂😂😂

Britishers during that colonial days know how to live well.
I'd think living next to an Airfield might be a bit NOISY!
It actually isn't..
Probably it was started by someone impressing their friends with a black and white picture of their house haha
SHOULD ALLOW LOCALS TO ENJOY LIVING IN THIS TYPE OF HOUSES , NOT FOREIGNERS……… LOCALS FIRST POLICY
Most of the black and white houses are haunted.

Dude, you completely missed out the whole point of the video 🤣🤣🤣
It's good that Singapore🇸🇬 doesn't have Chinese🇨🇳
