@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks. I just realized that my default option, just to hit the high ball somehow by two-handed backhand without jumping, is not included in the list! That's why it never works!?
You can hit the ball at the highest spot however unless you're very strong in dealing with those balls then you'll struggle to get any real bite behind that shot. It's a very defensive option that will normally get the player in trouble.
The high backhand has never really troubled me (2-hander), but hitting a forehand approach shot off a low short slice always gets me, especially on slow surfaces. It's hard for me to understand how for lots of players this is a routine shot, while they in turn struggle with shots that are easy for me (such as high backhands). I guess this is what makes tennis interesting, everyone has different weaknesses and strengths, and some people are better at difficult shots than the easier ones.
Great lesson, Simon! I was taught a slice, attacking the ball with a vertical racquet face, hitting 12 to 6 o'clock, driving the shot into the court down the line. I love this shot which usually doesn't come back.
Shapo's jumping one handed backhand is absolutely insane. I've hurt my left wrist some weeks ago and now I'm hitting one handers bh, and I'm really enjoying it, but the return of serve and the jumping shot are way harder with one handed backhand. Great vid, Simon, keep it up.
I like 3 and 4. I notice fed rafa and djok love to use 4 when possible. I practice that with 2 players in each corner of opposite side of net. I like to use open stance so I can alternate inside out to the one guy and inside in to the other. That seems to hone those shots. But when I can't get around I have to hit. BH. I'll either slice it if I get pulled wide or drive it if it's a regular rally ball. I like the way you give different options. That's what gets me to watch you guys.
Great video Simon. This is a shot I struggle with the most. I usually loop the ball back cross court, but if it lands too short, then I'm in trouble. I will try working on hitting it on the rise, but it may not be easy to time, so I have to have good footwork.
There should be one more option which is hitting the ball on the rise at shoulder to head level. This choice, most of the time, allows you stay at your neutral position along the baseline and helps avoid moving forward for a strict-timing on-the-rise shot or moving backward for a defensive shot. I think this type of shots is most suitable for short players (like me). On tour, the player who uses this shot frequently is Fognini with his amazing backhand.
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thank you for your reply. In mean time, I'm having troubles keeping the ball deep. If you have any tips or practice exercises regarding this matter, I will very appreciate. I think the broad topic for this should be "How to stay unattackable in rally".
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks for asking! One of the things that intrigue me id how come its so frequent between club players to have smahes hitting the net. I would love to know your takes on that someday. Thanks for the awsome videos!

@@pawewlodarczyk6200 I would make sure he works on his serve, creating set plays off the serve and first strike. Making the points shorter, going for more power shots and not relying on the opponent making errors. Of course, working on his speed and fitness would be part of his improvements, but having short points in the meantime would help
I personally prefer using a drive volley when closer to the net, and a jumping backhand while closer to the baseline. And if I’m being pushed back, then an inside out/in forehand
Thank you for this video. I want to be sure I understand. What you are saying is that only the slice method can truly be employed to hit a high backhand. All the other methods are really saying to move to a position so that you don't actually it the ball when it is high. Is that right? I always wondered by so many great players with great backhands (Federer) would run around their backhands to hit a forehand from the alley. Negating a high-bouncing backhand is one good reason (now that I have seen this helpful video)
There is another method which is hitting the high ball but that requires solid technique, I made a lesson on it a few weeks ago, it should be out in the next few months
Can you also do a tutorial on this for single backhanded? I have searched almost all the youtube videos across the internet but haven't found a good tutorial on hitting high ball with single handed backhand. If you could also find some clips how professionals like Federer or Wawrinka do that in real matches, that will be fantastic!
