True but why doesn’t anyone talk about how unique thiems straight arm preparation OHBH is?
It is so unique / every other pro uses their arm bent in prep. And every other ohbh struggles with high bouncing balls (although some like roger 17 stepped in).
Thiem is the only one who had all the freedom benefits of a ohbh and also had a very stable arm so he can hit across the batt almost like a baseball bat.
I’ve got a bent arm prep too and it helps a lot with spin but not well on flatter balls - it’s got many more moving parts. So backfoot or over the shoulder is much harder.
Thiems backhand could be a ohbh model for the future - I think it’s to do with him having a 2hbh early on before transitioning to a one hander

Stan's backhand is quite mechanical, a very simple and efficient stroke, but not that beautiful. The problem with his drive is he does not have the ability to generate a lot of topspin on the shot. It's fairly flat. So when he makes the shot it has great penetration. But all too often it either strikes the net or lands beyond the baseline. Gasquet beat Wawrinka in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in five sets because Stan made so many backhand errors, despite Stan having a more powerful serve and forehand.

Gasquets backhand is the most beautiful shot in the modern era in my opinion. Rogers the most versatile and Stan/Domi with crushing power. Sampras and Becker both had nice ones but the shot was generally less offense oriented in the fast court era. Gugas was awesome also.

The problem with Shapavolov and Wawrinka's backhands is that both are unreliable. Neither man can seem to hit more than five backhands in a rally before producing an error. Both have much better forehands and serves than Gasquet, yet Gasquet has good records against both men simply because he hits more winners than errors off the backhand.

The one-handed backhand is a formidable shot that can surprise opponents with its unpredictability. This unique stroke often appears unexpectedly, making it challenging for rivals to anticipate and effectively respond. By incorporating this skill into your gameplay, you can gain a significant advantage and keep your opponents on their toes.

  • @mocee83

I think as a lefty using a ohbh Shapo has made excellent strides probably because of having to deal with cross court attacks from right handers throughout his career. He has developed such good bio mechanics for a one hander that so many right handers struggle to do, even the great RF had to put years of work into it. If only Shapo can develop a strong level headed, winner attitude, tennis fans can still enjoy such an aesthetically sound ohbh and probably pave the way for future stars. It might happen we will wait n see

Fed's was the most stylish and he could return incredibly well with that flick of a backhand.
Wawrinka's perhaps the strongest overall: in BH rallies his onehander never looked any weaker than opponents' twohanders.
SHapovalov's on the run shots and jumping backhands were outright spectacular.
Thiem could generate enormous topspin and in his best days fire down the line winners like no one.
Gasquet's backhand looked stronger than his forehand: it was something to stay away from.

Nice to see highlights of a shot that the ATP has basically killed off in the past 30 years. Thanks to the slowing down of surfaces/messing with the balls, and the desire to have a nice, high bounce on all surfaces, the tour has become an army of two-handed baseline robots grinding from 10 feet behind the baseline.
One-handers USED to have an advantage for parts of the year, during the grass-court and fast hard court season, and on fast carpet. The loopy, South American one-handed topspinners even had their own advantages on clay. But since the surfaces have been homogenized, you can play the exact same way from January to December. Zero variety is needed. Gone is the need to transition your game as you switch from one surface to the next. So the two-handed backhand has become the default backhand for the tour.
    In 1990, 30 players in the Top 50 had a one-hander. 8 players in the Top 10 alone! There were one-handed baseliners, one-handed serve-and-volleyers . . .
    2000: 21 of the Top 50.
    2010: 14
    2020: 9
    Today: 7

Gasquet and Wawrinka have the best one handed backhand in tennis history, way better than Federer's.

I never understand why in this one-handed backhands compilations the ATP set aside every time Gaudio (a Roland Garros champion), and put Almagro or Shapo, who, with all due respect, have not been as successful as Gaston. Gaudio´s backhand was a thing of beauty and deserves some respect and tribute, and not be treated like forgotten trash. Yes, he never had much marketing as the new generations, but anyway, we are talking about the last Roland Garros Champions before Nadal´s era.

The shot produces too many errors because it's too flat and mechanical.
