    I grew up in and around Galveston. I am 62 years old, I Have fished the jetties countless times. Not once, In 62 years have I EVER heard them referred to as anything other than "The Jetties" Not one time have I ever heard them referred to as "Groins" or "Piers" People in Texas know the difference between a Jetty and a Pier. And would NEVER confuse the two.

    I did a ton of fishing off of the ones on Bolivar, back in the 80s and 90s.
    We always called them jetties.
    I bet you've got a video about that cool old bunker out there on Bolivar too, huh. If not, you should.

      I mean, “safe” depends on what you are doing to retrieve them, however, shells are everywhere down there!

    Most, if not all barrier islands are younger than 8/10 thousand years old. They started forming after sea level stopped raising after the last glacial maximum

    I've never heard anyone call them groins before lol. Always known them as the jetties. Good place to fish and some surfers use them to get a head start to get out to the waves to not need to paddle out as far. Even with the jetties they still have ships refill the sand to them on occasion. I didn't know the ship channel jetties were the reason they were constructed though. Really cool.

    I’m from Galveston, have always fished the jetties. Never heard of them called groins. Is that the proper term?

    • @galvestonunscripted
      @galvestonunscripted  Місяць тому +1

      That’s the technical term for them as they aren’t abutting a ship channel. Groins are perpendicular structures on the shoreline, used to maintain updrift beaches or to restrict longshore sediment transport.
      The 2 rock structures at East Beach and Bolivar extending into the Gulf are jetties, as they are protecting the ship channel. (I still call the groins “jetties”) lol

      @@carriefranklin971 Wow I guess I was wrong you’re not ignorant. You are stupid. Ignorance is not knowing because you haven’t been told. You just admitted you were told the difference but chose to ignore that knowledge. Then you improperly used the word ignorant. Then there is the notion that because you “been on those jetties as a kid” somehow makes you an expert. I’ve been on an aircraft carrier as a kid, that doesn’t make me an expert on aircraft carriers. I have been on both the ground and the jetties as both a child and an adult. Does that mean I know more just because I have been on them as an adult? No. I know more because I listen to those who are more educated on the matter. How does that foot taste? You know the one you so firmly inserted into your mouth?
