I just got a message from a friend wanting to buy a tenor banjo, and the seller demoed the banjo by playing "Harvest Home". My friend liked the tune and wanted to know what the name was. I recognized the tune and I could play it on piano from memory. I learned the song by ear when I was picking up mandolin, and the "Pretty Shakey String Band" played it often. So I sat down with the "Fiddler's Fakebook" and started looking through songs from "A" to "H". I stopped 30 times when I recognized the song name and sight read the song "no, that's not it". I put bookmarks in the songs I liked. I remember dancing at contradances to "Harvest Home" and even playing in a string band accompanying dancers and a caller. What great memories! I've got to do this more often.
