We appreciated Apologia's books. We chose Astronomy and Ocean Zoology because my children wanted to study those. Because it was intrest led my children excelled. These books offered more information and was at a higher level then Master Books science. I wanted them to do the Anatomy book because I want my children to know how their bodies work. It was intense, I was impressed. Some of the information in that book I didn't know until I went through nursing school. I loved this for my children. With all three books, we have not used the notebooking journals, the children just read the material themselves and do the experiments on their own.
Because we homestead, I felt like my children had a good grasp of the other books in this series, except chemistry. I would still like to get the chemistry book sometime soon. But we needed some upper level books for my aging children so we landed on B. Builders and are loving it. I will keep Apologia for the younger children but transition to B. Builders as they each mature.

This is our first year using Apologia. My daughter wanted to do the zoology 2 swimming creatures. She has really been interested in learning about ocean animals. The only way I could make it work was to ditch the notebooking journal (because it felt like way too much) & use the audio version while following along with the book (we listen to it at lunch). We also save the experiments and do them on our fun Fridays, but we don’t do them all. She has actually really enjoyed it. I almost made a last minute switch right before our school year started because I was worried about it. I think holding it loosely and making it work for what we could handle has been key. I think we will finish way before the year is over, so I’m beginning to think about what we will do next. I’ll have to look at Berean Builders!

I had to use Apologia when I taught CC. It is BAD. Just a lot of wrong information that I was constantly correcting. The writing style is supposed to be chatty and approachable, but I just found it tedious. I would also never use Berean, because it's written by the same guy. I don't do a science curriculum before late middle school with my own kids. Before that, we do a TON of nature study, which is real science that young people can actually do. Before late middle they don't have the math or cognition for real science, it's just a waste of time.

I don't think the difference is really Apologia vs not Apologia, but the fact that Jay L.Wile (even though his name sounds like Wile E Coyote to me) is a great textbook writer and teacher and a good scientist who is also Christian, probably because he understands the History of Science which public schooled atheists have claimed to me isn't technically Science. But Science doesn't give you why it's important, it's only about how. To even find information in non Christian works going over macro vs micro hevolution I had to read stuff intended for college students in most universities (albeit Bachelor 101 level classes) so I have doubts how much is or was even taught on the Scientific method, the real difference between hypothesis, theory, law, etc. in public schools maintstream science curriculum at the elementary to high school levels.
